As Southern Miss loaded the bus this morning to make the trip to Tallahassee for their regional, they picked up even more good news today.
The baseball program continues to win in the present and build for the future by adding commitments from Jake Davis, LHP from Howard College, as well as Matt Wallner, RHP from Forest Lake, MN.
Wallner is a 6'5 pitcher who plans to enroll at Southern Miss in the fall, and he along with Davis will help bolster what is shaping up to be a very talented staff.
Jake Davis was 5-2 with 2 saves and a 4.34 ERA for Howard College as a sophomore last season. He said the Southern Miss program stood out to him after he took a visit to Hattiesburg.
"Out of all the schools I talked to or visited, Southern Miss just really felt like home," Davis told GoldenEaglePride.com.
"I really liked the facilities and the coaching staff I felt was genuinely interested in my abilities and helping me improve my game."
He said the staff has in mind using him late in games.
"They said they have a need for an upperclassman lefty on the mound for the back end of the bullpen," he added.
Davis, who plans to enroll in the fall at Southern Miss, looks like he'll have a full summer as well.
"I'll be playing ball this summer for the Danville Dans in the prospect league," he said. "I'm hoping to catch a game in the regional tournament for Southern Miss if we aren't playing."
