D.J. Gillins is a three star QB who has taken quite a journey from Jacksonville (FL) where he played his high school ball, to Wisconsin where he played in the spring before transferring to Pearl River CC.
The 6'3, 205 athletic quarterback took a visit to Southern Miss today where he also picked up an offer while meeting with the coaches.
"The visit was great, I've been there 4 or 5 times so I'm very familiar with Hattiesburg, the campus, and facilities," Gillins told GoldenEaglePride.com.
"I enjoyed being there again. We saw some of the new things they are doing like the locker room and weight room. Then I talked with Coach Hopson and Coach Dawson for a while."
Gillins said he was already familiar with Coach Dawson and his style.
"He likes to go fast and put points on the board," Gillins said.
"I knew him when he was at West Virginia, I got to know him there. He's a great offensive coach and knows how to move the ball."
He also was excited when they told him they wanted him to come to Southern Miss.
"They told me they are losing a four year starter and will need a good competition for the starting job next year," he said. "That is exciting. The chance to possibly come in and play right away and lead a great program like Southern Miss is something that really appeals to me."
He also said his experiences have really helped him and is preparing him for the next level.
"I've played at Wisconsin so I have experienced that level and then now at Pearl River it is great experience to be the man and have my teammates look to me to lead them," he said. "I feel like this season will really get me ready for what I need to do for the rest of my career."
Gillins is a December grad and plans on making that decision mid-season or after the season. He also said he's hearing from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and LSU in addition to his offers from Southern Miss, New Mexico, Troy, and SMU.
