Tahj Sykes has had a clear favorite since he wowed the coaches at a Southern Miss elite camp weeks ago.
The talented 6'4, 260lb Defensive lineman put on a show for the coaching staff who were impressed with his athletic ability and strength for his size after his work-out for them at camp.
The feeling was mutual, however, and tonight Sykes has made it official that he wants to play for the black and gold.
He committed to the coaches on a visit to Southern Miss for the "Black Ops" weekend and told the coaches he was ready to join them and make it known.
He made the announcement via his twitter account tonight.
"On my visit, I saw the brotherhood among us and that is what made me commit," he told GoldenEaglePride.com.
He said the coaches see him coming in and being an immediate contributor along the defensive line.
"They said I can come in and compete right away for a starting job," he said.
Sykes, who has always favored USM, didn't want to wait any longer before making his pledge.
"Man I feel like the luckiest guy in the world tonight," he said. "I give all glory to God and I'm just so happy right now."
Sykes heads into his senior season for Columbus HS as an emerging star in the state, and a bit of a sleeper right now. He'll certainly be one to watch, and fits the bill for what this Golden Eagle staff is looking for in a defender. Physical, tough, athletic, and quick.
