A few Southern Miss recruiting tid-bits for your Saturday...
As reported yesterday, Coffeyville JuCo DL Dereck Boles has added an offer to Southern Miss. The former Boise St. stand-out landed at Coffeyville and is in his second season there. The nasty defensive lineman is an animal in the trenches and would be a huge pick up for the Golden Eagles, desperate to add some size in the middle. He'll be a top target for USM going forward.
USM was the first offer for WR from Ocala (FL) Javious Brightmon, and he told Scout's Corey Bender that he remains very interested in Southern Miss. He's picking up Big 10 interest as well as Western Kentucky coming on, but I expect the Golden Eagles to be in the hunt for him to the end. Dan Disch is handling his recruiting.
Jones JC three star OT (6'5, 280) Kelby Wickline is the kind of tackle the Eagles would love to bring in to compete right away next season. Wickline is having a huge season and is a big reason for the rushing success of JCJC this season. He just added his 5th offer from Missouri, and has offers from UAB, SMU, Kentucky, and Southern Miss. The Eagles have a great shot with Wickline, who has not named any leader yet. But, he's taken two unofficial visits to campus at least that we are aware of, and has remained in close contact with the staff.
We believe another JuCo OT to watch closely is Hanner Shipley of Blinn College, who just recently picked up an offer from Southern Miss. Here is another kid who will play right away, wherever he goes. It is obvious the staff wants to add help at the tackle position for depth and experience next year. Shipley signed with LSU out of high school, and USM is was his first offer out of Blinn and he now holds 8 offers.
Few are having a year like Darius Maberry, Southern Miss commit. To say the Eagles got a steal is an understatement. He's already picked up a well deserved third star from Scout, and is leading his high school to a huge season. He remains very committed to Southern Miss and is certainly the RB of the future. He has a tremendous blend of speed and quickness, and can stop on a dime and make defenders look foolish. Check out his mid-season highlights: LINK
-Also keep an eye on Palmetto Prep Academy QB Willie Greene, who will take a visit to Southern Miss for the Charlotte game on November 5th. LINK
-For a little track and field recruiting, I caught up with 400 and 800 star Kenard Harris, one of the top runners in the state from Oxford HS. He took a visit to Southern Miss, and enjoyed his time on campus. "It was awesome. Very surprised and exceeded my expectations," he said. "The track was really maintained. The coach seems like a nice dude and seems to be invested in the process. Definitely number 1 on my list at the time to run track."
**I've got more requests for interviews and will update these through the weekend**
