The latest on some prospects from Southern Miss recruiting..

Recruiting is heating up as the temps get colder. Southern Miss now enters a critical two month stretch heading into signing day. Here are some tid-bits as the team gears up for a big winter.

The regular season might be over, but another season is just getting about to swing into high gear.  Recruiting season, in many regards, can be just as important as the regular season for college football fans.  For good reason too, as bringing in talent is vital to the future success of the program.

Coach Hopson and his staff are hopeful that the early blitz of offers when he was hired back in the spring and relationships built will pay dividends for the program and class of 2017.

Here are a few tid-bits about some prospects, and we'll keep the info rolling right up until signing day.

Big JuCo offensive guard Tanis Joseph tells me yesterday that he has set an official visit for Southern Miss the weekend of January 20th.  He'll be taking a tour of visits during the month, visiting East Carolina and Marshall as well.  He appears to be one of the top offensive line prospects for the Golden Eagles, and he has Southern Miss very high on his list.

Southern Miss continues to hit Florida hard.  Coach Pecoraro twice went to see South Florida commit Daewood Davis.  They are working on setting an official visit with him, and they certainly have some work to do to flip him from his home state.  But, they value the 3 star enough to visit him twice and are making a huge push at getting him in January on an official.

Southern Miss has an official set up with Deonte Sheffield as reported by's Corey Bender.  This is an interesting one to me as the Eagles have a commitment from Darius Maberry.  Could they be looking to sign another RB?  Or, have him in as a back up plan?  Either way, Sheffield is a really nice sleeper, a 3 star with great speed.  He'll also be visiting Troy and South Alabama.

Southern Miss, just today, offered monster (6'5, 355) OG Luis Lebron.  He's from Jacksonville (FL) but is a commit to Colorado State where he'll be visiting this weekend for his official.  I haven't talked with him but I believe he'll be graduating early and enrolling in the spring, so USM is trying to make a late push and get him in for a visit.

If the Golden Eagles sign a JuCo QB, it appears Jordan Ta'amu will be the top choice.  The talented signal caller got a visit from Coach Dawson.  Glyn Dyar has been all over this story and has the update with him here:

I'm told Southern Miss is still very much in the mix with Memphis commit O'Bryan Goodson.  He's been committed to Memphis forever, but has taken a visit down to Southern Miss.  I'm hearing that he still is listening and considering what the Golden Eagle coaches are telling him, and he also has Terrance Pope signing USM's praises too.  Watch for a visit from him.  He's one of the top in-state prospects the staff is after.

Biloxi WR Tim Jones is one we haven't mentioned much lately, but I'm hearing he's still very high on the list for Southern Miss.  The 3 star play maker certainly has a chance to make some noise with the Golden Eagles, and being close to home is very important to him.

I'm going to work on getting up with Isaiah this weekend and hope to have a full story on him next week.  It would not surprise me in the least to see him commit to Southern Miss.  He has visited multiple home games and we believe would love to go to USM if it works out for him.

Other notes:

-The weekend of December 9 will be a big one for JuCo official visits.  We believe Southern Miss will have several JuCo prospects in that weekend for a visit and are working to find out exactly who.  Here is an update on JuCo prospects:

-I'm told to keep a close eye on D.J. Gillins of Pearl River.  I'm told that Southern Miss is in the picture with him though he's committed to SMU right now.

-I have received word that Seth Holloway, former stand-out at PCS, will be transferring to Southern Miss.

-The list of offers in Florida continues to explode for USM.  There is no question, the Golden Eagles are making a concerted effort to get in the sunshine state and dip into the abundance of riches in talent there.  Speed, speed, and more speed is the name of the game from the '18 prospects offered this week in that state.  Here are just a few:
