Southern Miss has found a true sleeper in Zach Portlock of Davidson HS in Mobile, Alabama. The Golden Eagles have made a name for their program through the overlooked players who come in with a chip on their shoulder to prove themselves in college.
Portlock certainly fits that description.
The talented inside LB recently announced that he'll be taking a walk-on at Southern Miss for next season. At 6'0, 210, it appears he will compete inside for the Golden Eagles down the road.
"I'm not positive on a set position on whether I'll be playing inside or outside," Portlock told GoldenEaglePride.com.
"I have not heard anything about playing outside backer so i expect to play inside. Possibly, a little bit of both."
His decision to come to Southern Miss started from when he fell in love with the school on a visit to a camp back in the summer.
"Southern Miss has been on the top of my list since I went to camp this summer and toured campus," he said.
"I loved the atmosphere, the football program is great, and the academics are even better. Plus, it is not far away from my hometown."
Portlock added that he is working to get ready for next year, and is focused on being the best player he can be for Southern Miss.
"I'm running track to get myself in shape and ready to come to USM," he said. "I'm also just working out football specific so I can get ready for the next level. I'm just ready for the experience."
