O'Neill Burgos, 6'1, 225lb INF/C announced his commitment to Southern Miss on twitter yesterday. The talented big man, originally from Puerto Rico, will play his senior season for Brookhaven Academy this upcoming season.
After graduation, he plans now to continue his baseball with the University of Southern Mississippi.
"I've been living in the United States about a month and a half but I have been here many times," he told GoldenEaglePride.com last night.
"I have traveled with the Puerto Rico legends team playing tournaments in Nashville, TN, Atlanta, GA, and Jupiter, Florida."
Through a connection with the coaching staff at Southern Miss, Burgos was able to take a visit and talk with the coaches. It wasn't long after that he made his decision to commit to the Golden Eagle program. He will play catcher next season for Brookhaven Academy, but likely will be a corner infielder at the college level.
"I saw the team play and they have a really huge stadium, and if they tell you 'hey, we have a great program,' but you don't see any results then there is something wrong," he said of his commitment to USM.
"But, Southern Miss has a really good team, an excellent staff, and they will give me an opportunity to play."
Stay tuned for more to come on the newest Golden Eagle for the baseball program.
