Make no mistake about it, Nathan Pickering is a home grown Mississippi boy, and he has every intention to keep it that way in the future. The big time defensive end from Seminary has picked up offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Alcorn State, and now the Golden Eagles of Southern Miss are the most recent to put their hat into the ring.
Pickering (6'5, 270) can play anywhere on the defensive line with his quickness, power, and explosion. He is a hard worker who will be a difference maker at the next level.
"I'm doing great right now, I'm working hard on my upper body strength and quickness," he told GoldenEaglePride.com. "I believe that is what will take me to the next level."
He also showed out at "The opening," a showcase for many of the nation's top high school talent.
"I had a great time," he said. "I had the chance to do all kinds of drills, play with the best in the nation, and show what I could do. It was really hype."
Pickering just picked up an offer from Southern Miss, and Pickering made it clear the Golden Eagles have a great shot with him.
"Coach Billings made the offer and I was excited about it," he said. "USM has a great school with great tradition and players. It is only 15 minutes from my home where I live so that would be great too."
He has known all about the program growing up so close.
"Oh yeah, I've been to a ton of games," he said. "My girlfriend's brother is a student there, and my family has season tickets. I love the Rock and the atmosphere there."
For now, it is all about him and his desire to stay in state.
"Oh it feels awesome to have all the in-state interest," he said. "I really don't like traveling by myself and I love my home, I don't want to go far from home."
