Southern Miss has made a concerted effort recruiting wise in the state of Texas.  The work they are doing is certainly making some noise in the Lone Star state, and Coach Walden with his connections is on some nice talent early.

One OLB high on the radar is Xavier Benson of Pleasant Grove HS in Texarkana.

Benson is a nice mix of size and speed, and could easily develop into a hand in the dirt defensive end.  For now, he'll roam the outside where he has the size (6'2, 200lbs) and quickness to move in space.

"I'm working right now to improve my hips so that I can be more explosive," he informed GoldenEaglePride.com in an interview.  "That's really been the main focus of my off-season."

Southern Miss and Coach Walden recently made the offer to Benson.

"They let me know they want athletic defenders with speed, and that they really see a fit for me on the future of their defense," he said.  "They want athletes, and said I fit what they are looking for.

"They seem like a great school.  I'm excited to visit and see what they are all about."

Benson said he hopes to visit this summer.  For now, if made to name a leader, he added, "Probably Louisiana Lafayette."
