Southern Miss picked up some big news Friday after when East MS DB Travion Williams pledged his commitment to the Golden Eagle program.

The talented, 5'11, 170lb CB has the chance to fill an immediate need for the Golden Eagles in the future.  He committed to Southern Miss after an elite camp in Hattiesburg.

"First of all, I want to give all my thanks to the man above for giving me this opportunity," Williams told GoldenEaglePride.com.

"Knowing that there would be a lot of Defensive Backs leaving, I felt like I can come in and be a big help to the family."

Williams and the Southern Miss staff have known each other for years.  When Hopson and company were at Alcorn, they recruiting Williams who was at Charleston High School.  They stayed in touch, and now they've both made it official.

"I felt their trust," he said.

"Knowing that they have been loyal to me since high school and never gave up on me, I wanted to give them something in return by not giving up on them. The coaches are awesome and great men to be around."

Williams told us he also had offers to Mississippi State, Ole Miss, and Memphis among others.

"I will graduate in December and will be at home with my Southern Miss family then," he added.  "I will have two great years left to play."

Williams will fill an immediate need for the Golden Eagles, who will have an opening at the CB position.  No doubt, Williams will be able to step right in and pick things up and compete for a spot.
