Southern Miss Falls In Game Three

Southern Mississippi came in to this game against Louisiana Tech hoping to complete the sweep of the Bulldogs before conference play started. Tech was just trying to salvage one game in what was a tough weekend for them. Louisiana Tech's bats, combined with a good deal of errors by USM would give the visiting Bulldogs an easy win over the Golden Eagles 11-4.

The game started out slow, but the Bulldogs were the first ones to strike thanks to a handful of errors made by the eagles in the third inning.

Tech was able to rattle off three runs before Southern Miss could get their first out. Chris Kersten drove another run in with a two out single later in the inning. Tech then got another run when Matt Combs got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring Kersten in to score. Jonathon Johnston would come in to pitch and got the last out without doing any more damage to give the Bulldogs the early 5-0 advantage.

"James Ewing and Bo Davis aren't out on the field for us and that is huge defensively, we have got a lot of inexperience out there," said Coach Corky Palmer "I think we will be better once we get those two back and get the younger guys some more experience."

Errors would cost the Eagles again in the fourth inning when Brian Dozier allowed Nick Grunenwald to reach on an E6. He would score when Devon Dageford hit a double down the right field line. Kevin Winn would score on a no out single by Alex Williams.

In the next at bat, Chris Kersten hit a double to score two runs. Another no out hit by Clint Stubbs brought Chris Kersten around to score to make it a 10-0 Louisiana Tech advantage. Jeff Stanley came in for the eagles and got them out of the inning before any more runs could be scored.

USM would get a little offense in the bottom half of the fourth with Bo Davis hitting his fourth home run of the year to close the gap 10-1.

Louisiana Tech quickly got that run back in the fifth with Kevin Winn doubling and scoring Patrick Thomas to maintain the ten point lead over Southern Miss 11-1.

Southern got on the board again with a single by Bo Davis that scored Brian Dozier to get La Tech's lead into single digits 11-2.

Kyle Maxie cut into the Bulldogs lead in the eighth inning with a two out, two RBI single to make it 11-4.

Louisiana Tech used a double play in the ninth to cap off their win versus the Golden Eagles and avoid the sweep.

The USM pitchers struggled on the mound today, mostly because of all the errors committed by the defense. Scott Copeland went 2.2 innings giving up five runs, but only one of those runs were earned. Seth Hester came in for relief and gave up five runs, four earned, in his short 0.1 innings of work. The other run was given up by Jeff Stanley who worked 3.2 innings. Matt Warren came in for the last two innings and worked them flawlessly.

Southern Miss' bats actually looked pretty good today. As a team, USM got twelve hits, but was only able to squeeze four runs out of it. Bo Davis looked to be back in form, going 3 for 5 with a home run, an RBI, and two runs scored.

Tyler Koelling looked good at the plate having a 3 for 3 day. Kyle Maxie led the team in RBIs with a two run double in the eighth.

USM will return to action on Tuesday when they take on the Bulldogs of Mississippi State. The game will take place in Pearl, MS at Trustmark Park.

The game is set to start at 6:30 P.M.

USM will throw pitcher Todd McInnis who is 2-1 on the year with an ERA of 3.66.
