ULM Betters Southern Miss on Tuesday

USM seemed to have a little momentum coming in to tonight after salvaging the final game of a three game series versus Rice in exciting fashion. UL Monroe was wanting to avenge a loss to the Southern Miss from earlier in the season. The Warhawks would score early and often to put the game out of reach for the Golden Eagles.

The Warhawks looked ready to play early on in the game, jumping out in front of the Eagles with two runs in the second inning. Matt Collins scored from second off of a single by Jordy Poche. Poche scored the second run off another single by Ryan McMillan to cap off the inning and give UL Monroe the 2-0 lead.

The Warhawks loaded the bases with their first three batters in the third. Somehow the Eagles were able to get out of the inning only allowing one run, but that run extended ULM's lead to three runs.

A two RBI double by Boomer Blanchard in the top of the fourth further extended the lead to 5-0. Monroe got another run across with an RBI single by Matt Collins to put Southern Miss behind 6-0.

A solo home run from Joey Archer closed the gap for the Golden Eagles in the bottom of the fifth to make it 6-1.

Matt Laird got a no out single that drove in Ben Soignier in the top of the seventh to get back the run that they gave up in the fifth and bring the score to 7-1.

Jon Prevost hit a two run shot in the top of the eighth to tighten the Warhawk's grip on the game 9-1.

Nick Smith got drove in Michael Ewing in the bottom of the ninth to close the gap, but the Warhawks were able to shut down the Eagles the rest of the way an put USM away 9-2.

The Eagles had another tough night on the mound. Scott Copeland started the game and his night ended after the second, giving up three runs, two earned.

In relief of Copeland, Jonathon Johnston also worked two innings giving up three runs. Seth Hester came in and threw three innings only giving up one run. Moses Munoz gave up two earned runs in his only inning of duty tonight. Matt Warren closed the game out for the Eagles working a hitless ninth inning.

USM had a tough night at the plate, only scoring two runs on four team hits.

Joey Archer had the first RBI of the game with his fifth inning home run. Nick Smith was responsible for the second RBI with a one out single in the bottom of the ninth.

"This is a really immature team" said Coach Corky Palmer after his team's performance tonight. This is USM's fourth loss in their last five games.

USM will return to action tomorrow afternoon against the Rebels of Ole Miss. First pitch is set for 5:30pm. The forecast is looking wet so bring your umbrellas and/or ponchos.

USM will throw Jeff Stanley, who is making his first start this season. "We will give (Jeff) a shot, you know, we have tried some other guys and now it's his turn."


-Taylor Walker ended his hitting streak at 18 tonight.

-Nick Smith got his first career hit and RBI tonight.
