Eagles Sweep UCF

ORLANDO – Southern Miss swept the double header and the series over UCF with a 19-1 victory in the second game of a double header after winning game one 26-10 earlier in the day. Both games were called early by the mercy rule.

"Anytime you can win three games on the road in Conference USA that is an accomplishment in itself," head coach Corky Palmer said. "It is not easy to sweep anyone on the road and I thought I guys played hard to get that done this weekend."

Five different Golden Eagles had two hits in the second game today with Brian Dozier leading the charge adding in three RBI and three runs score to go along with two walks.

Between the two games today Dozier ended six-for-nine with two home runs, seven runs, nine RBI, 12 total bases, two walks and a sacrifice fly.

Along with their two hits in game two, Bo Davis tallied three runs and two RBI, while Kameron Brunty had three RBI with a run scored and Corey Stevens added in two runs and a RBI.

One of the bright spots on the weekend was the return of James Ewing to second base for Southern Miss, he had two hits with three RBI and two runs scored in game two including a two-run home run. In the two games he played today he was six-for-11 with five runs scored, eight RBI and tallied 11 total bases including two doubles and a home run.

"James really keys our lineup when he is in there," Palmer said. "He is such a gifted played, especially mentally he knows the game so well.

Southern Miss continued to hit the long ball with four more home runs in game two bringing the three game series total to nine, including three for Brian Dozier on the weekend.

Todd McInnis picked up his fourth win of the season working six innings allowing only one run on six hits while striking out seven while allowing only three base runners after the second inning.

"Todd has had three good starts in a row, I think that we have gotten him back on the right track now," Palmer added.

Wade Weather worked a perfect seventh inning retiring all three hitters in order to close out the game.

For Southern Miss the first inning of game two looked an awful lot like the seven run first inning in game one as Southern Miss erupted for 10 runs in the first frame. Taylor Walker struck out but reached first base on a wild pitch and Brian Dozier walked.

James Ewing stroked an RBI single to left field to score Walker and Joey Archer was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Kameron Brunty delivered a two RBI single to put the Eagles up by three. Corey Stevens followed with a hard ground ball that UCF third baseman Jake Huxtable could not handle to allow another run to score.

Travis Graves worked a walk to load the bases and Tyler Koelling picked up an RBI with a bases loaded walk to force home Brunty. In his second at bat of the inning Taylor Walker ripped a two-RBI single to right-center field.

Brian Dozier followed with his third home run in as many games, a three-run shot over the left field wall to cap the 10 run first inning.

In the first inning of the two games today Southern Miss scored 18 total runs, with right in the first game and 10 in the second game.

UCF added a single run in the bottom of the first on a RBI single Shane Brown.

Southern Miss added a single run in the top of the second. Corey Stevens singled up the middle and Travis Graves was hit by a pitch. Tyler Koelling laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners over and Stevens scored on a RBI infield single by Walker.

The Golden Eagles we at it again in the top of the third as Bo Davis drew a walk and James Ewing blasted his second home run of the season to put Southern Miss on top 13-1.

Southern Miss added a single run in the top of the fifth without a hit as Archer drew a walk, Brunty was hit by a pitch and Graves walk to load the bases. Tyler Koelling picked up the RBI as he drew the third walk of the inning to force home Archer and make the score 14-1.

Kameron Brunty added in another hit in the sixth inning, a RBI single to right field to score Dozier who walked to lead off the inning. Corey Stevens followed with an RBI infield single off the chest of UCF third baseman Huxtable to score Davis who singled earlier in the inning and make the score 16-1.

Michael Ewing entered the game as a pinch hitter in the top of the seventh inning and drove the first pitch he saw over the right-center field wall for his second home run of the season.

The rally continued in the seventh as Josh Fields Drew a pinch hit walk and Bo Davis hit his team leading seventh home run of the season and the ninth home run of the series.

Southern Miss continues the road trip on Tuesday as they travel to Troy, Ala. to battle the Troy Trojans both Tuesday and Wednesday.

"We have been playing pretty well on the road but that will be a tough two game series at Troy," Palmer said.
