Southern Miss jumped out to an early lead against the Thundering Herd, with a first inning RBI single by James Ewing that drove in Taylor Walker from second.
Joey Archer got a big home run in the bottom half of the third to get the USM lead to 4-0 going in to the fourth.
Marshall shortened the Eagles' lead in the top of the sixth inning with a single by Ben Jurevicius that drove in Adam Yeager. They would get another run across before the end of the inning with a single by Thor Meeks that got the score to 4-2.
Marshall threatened late in the game, but the Eagles were able to keep them scoreless and preserved a 4-2 win over the Thundering Herd.
JR Ballinger had a great night on the bump for the Golden Eagles going 5.2 innings only giving up two runs and striking out eight.
Collin Cargill and Cody Schlagel both had great outings in relief of Ballinger. Both of them threw 1.2 scoreless innings to preserve the Golden Eagle victory.
Three Eagles had multiple hit games at the plate, but the biggest swing of the night came off of the bat of Joey Archer. His three run home run would prove to be the difference in tonight's game versus Marshall. The other RBI in the game came off the bat of James Ewing in the first inning when he drove in Taylor Walker.
This win moved USM to 19-9 and 5-2 in conference USA. Marshall is now 12-16 on the year and 3-4 in conference USA.
Southern Miss will return to action tomorrow for the second game of this series against Marshall. First pitch is set for 3 P.M. at Pete Taylor Park.
