Memphis Takes Game One

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – The Southern Miss baseball team dropped the Conference USA series opener at Memphis, 5-4 Friday evening at the USA Olympic Baseball Stadium.

The Golden Eagles fell behind early and made a game of it late, but left the trying run at third and the go-ahead runner at second base to end the ninth inning.

JR Ballinger suffered the loss for Southern Miss, allowing five runs, only three earned, on six hits in five innings of work. Moses Munoz pitched well out of the bullpen keeping Southern Miss in the game working, 3.2 scoreless innings, scattering three hits and striking out six.

Bo Davis and Kameron Brunty each had two hits a piece for Southern Miss, with Davis also scoring two runs. Corey Stevens drove in two runs as well.

Southern Miss opened the scoring in the top of the first as Bo Davis ripped a two-out single to right field and Corey Stevens followed with a RBI double, just inside the right field line, to score Davis from first and put the Golden Eagles on the board with an early 1-0 lead.

Trey Wiedman tied the game for Memphis in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out RBI single to centerfield.

The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a Drew Martinez sacrifice fly and a Tyler Huelsing RBI double to put the Tigers up 3-1.

Memphis added an unearned run later in the inning as freshman BA Vollmuth was charged with a tough error on a ground ball that took a funny hop off the lip of the infield allowing the third run of the inning to score as the ball trickled into shallow right field.

The Tigers added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth as Chris Newsom drew a bases loaded walk to make the score 5-1. Memphis had the bases loaded with no outs when Moses Munoz stuck out two Tigers and almost escaped the dangerous situation without allowing a run before Newsom drew the RBI walk.

Southern Miss struck again in the top of the seventh as Tyler Koelling singled to start the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on the steal attempt. He came around to score on Taylor Walker's RBI groundout, ending the day for Memphis starter Branch Davis.

The rally continued in the seventh as both James Ewing and Bo Davis singled, on Davis single as Ewing rounded second to take third base, Memphis centerfielder Drew Martinez's throw to third sailed high allowing Ewing to scamper home and Davis to advance all the way around to third. Corey Stevens followed with a sacrifice fly to score Davis from third and pull the Golden Eagles within one at 5-4.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow for game two of the series with first pitch set for 2:00 p.m.
