USM with a big tourney win

With USM's hopes of a regional relying solely on their play in the conference tournament, the Golden Eagles came in knowing that this was a must win game against the Green Wave of Tulane. The Eagles know that nothing short of the Tourney Championship will get them to a regional so, really, every game is a must win. The Eagles would not disappoint.

The game started off with a bang with Bo Davis hitting a triple, that he ended up scoring on due to an error by the third baseman to give USM the early 1-0 advantage. Joey Archer extended the USM lead later in the inning with a three run home run that made it 4-0.

Tulane got a run across one run in the bottom half of the inning to narrow the early USM lead to 4-1.

Southern would get back on the board in the top of the third with a Corey Stevens double that scored Kameron Brunty. BA Vollmuth hit a sac fly to score Corey Stevens from third to make the USM advantage 6-1.

The Eagles had another big inning in the top of the fourth, due to two errors and two wild pitches by Tulane to extend their lead to 11-1.

Tulane worked themselves out of the "ten run rule" in the bottom of the seventh with a home run by Jared Dyer to make the score 11-2.

The Eagles put the ten run rule back in effect in the top of the eighth with four more runs. They were able to hold the Green Wave off in the bottom half to secure the win 15-2.

"We came out ready to play," said Coach Corky Palmer "We came out with more fire than I have seen all year."

On the mound, Todd McInnis had a terrific game, giving up only one run in his six innings of work. Cody Schlagel worked in relief, giving up one run in his two innings.

The highlight of McInnis' day was in the first inning when he held the Green Wave to only one run in what could have been a big inning for the Green Wave.

"It was big when McInnis got out of the inning. It could have been a damage dealing inning for the Green Wave and he only gave up one run" said Coach Palmer.

The Eagles had a huge night at the plate, scoring 15 runs on 15 hits. Joey Archer had a big game at the plate, going 3 for 5 with four RBIs and a home run.

The bats got going after the Bo Davis triple. The Eagles were able to get four runs with two outs in the first inning and they never looked back.

This win gets the Eagles into the winners bracket of the C-USA tournament, where they will face the Pirates of East Carolina.

First pitch of that game will be at 7:30. JR Ballinger will take the hill for Southern Miss. Ballinger is 4-3 with a 4.29 on the season.
