Championship Bound

The Southern Miss baseball team is beginning to mirror that of the Southern Miss football team. Their hope of postseason play all but lost, when something lights a fire under their tails and they get things going. They tried to keep their momentum going tonight as they took on Tulane for the right to play Rice in the C-USA tournament.

The Eagles got things going early, as Kameron Brunty drove James Ewing home on a two out single to right field to give USM the early 1-0 advantage.

Tulane quickly got things back on track, tying things up in the top of the second with Jared Dyer hitting a solo home run.

Southern Miss got back on top in the bottom of the fourth with a James Ewing sac fly that scored BA Vollmuth to make the score 2-1 Eagles.

USM extended their lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two out double by Tyler Koelling, scoring Corey Stevens for Southern Miss' third run of the game.

Josh Fields came in relief in the sixth inning and shut Tulane down, not allowing a hit the rest of the way to give USM the win 3-1.

"That was unbelievable what Fields did," said Coach Corky Palmer "It was awesome, he gave us a shot in the arm."

Tulane had a tough night getting runners in, stranding 13 on the basepaths, 9 of which were in scoring position.

"Stanley did a good job getting out of trouble early, but I just felt like he hit a wall" said Coach Palmer "I just felt like it was time to make a change."

On the mound is where the Eagles won this ballgame. Stanley threw five innings only giving up one run. Josh Fields was the star of the night, though, working 3.2 innings perfectly while striking out five.

The Eagles advance to the Conference Championship game where they will face the Rice Owls on Sunday. First pitch will be at 1pm.

The Owls took 2 out of 3 against the Eagles in the regular season, but they lost the game when Todd McInnis pitched. That is who will go for the Eagles.

"McInnis will go as far as he can go, I don't know how far that is, but he is the one that is going out there" said Palmer.
