History Baby... History

Who would have ever thought that USM would be in this position. Two weeks ago USM was sitting in the field house praying that they would make it to their seventh straight regional. Today the Eagles are one win away from taking this Cinderella story to Omaha, Nebraska. The only team in their way is the Gators of Florida.

The Gators drew first blood in the top of the second with a home run by their freshman sensation Preston Tucker.

Bo Davis returned the favor in the bottom half with a huge bomb over the bleachers in left field on a 1-2 count to tie the game up at one.

Florida would quickly get back on top with a solo shot by Brandon McArthur to get back on top 2-1.

Florida kept the ball rolling in the next inning with a bases loaded single that scored one run and left them loaded with only one out. They got one more across in the next at bat with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1. Another single would score two more to make it 6-1 Gators.

USM got a few runs back in the bottom of the fourth with some timely hitting to shorten their deficit to 6-3. Corey Stevens was ejected at the end of the inning due to contact with the Florida catcher.

USM snuck a little closer in the fifth with a home run down the left field line by James Ewing, making the game 6-4.

The game got a lot more exciting in the bottom of the eight. USM loaded the bases with one out and Joey Archer at the plate. Joey hit a two run single to tie the game up. Tyler Koelling seemed to have hit a double play ball the next at bat, but the first baseman booted the final out, allowing Adam Doleac to come around to score the go ahead run.

Collin Cargill was able to shut the Gators down in the next half of the inning to send Southern Miss to Omaha for the first time in school history.

The USM players proceeded to gather in a dog pile near the pitcher's mound and celebrate the greatest win in Southern Miss baseball history. Who knows? This could be the greatest win in Southern Miss sports history.

Todd McInnis toed the rubber for the Eagles and made it five innings and gave up all six runs that Florida could muster.

The bullpen took over from there. Scott Copeland and Collin Cargill took the Eagles the rest of the way without giving up a run.

At the plate the Eagles spread the love around again. Bo Davis and James Ewing both had solo home runs. Joey Archer came through bigger than any other Eagle though with his three RBI night, including his two RBI single to tie the game up.

The Eagles were absolutely ecstatic after the game. Here are a few quotes from the Golden Eagles after the game was over.

Post game quotes:

Bo Davis

"This feels just like I thought it would. It feels amazing. I thought the last time we dog piled was the best, but this one passed it for sure."

"I don't know what is going on, I really don't have an answer for this. We have just been playing hard and when we look up at the scoreboard and we have been winning."

Adam Doleac on his pinch hit

"It is great. I have kind of gotten used to being down by one and coming through with a pinch hit. It is kind of pressurized, but you get used to it and settle in."

Tyler Koelling on the error by the first baseman

"I had no idea what happened. I was so excited that I couldn't even think right there, man, it was amazing."

Tyler Koelling on the historical impact of the game

"This is probably number one win of all time (USM sports). Now we get to go to Omaha and compete with the best teams in the nation."

Todd McInnis on feelings after the game

"This is incredible. A few weeks ago we were in Memphis and we have a sermon every Sunday and we were talking about how we weren't playing very well. Three weeks later we had our sermon and we have made it."

Todd McInnis on the Bullpen

"We told them coming in that everybody is going to have to step up. Jonathon Johnston did last night and Scott Copeland did tonight."

Todd McInnis

"This is the biggest win of my life by far."

JR Ballinger

"It feels amazing. I don't know what to say right now. I don't know if I want to cry. All I know is that I want to go to Omaha."
