GEP Season Preview: Special Teams has been bringing you the most in depth preview of the Southern Miss football team on the market for the past few months. Today we finish our positional preview as we talk with Coach Duggan about the Special Teams.

There isn't much optimism surrounding the Golden Eagle's kicking game this fall. USM struggled in this area last year and they graduated the most experienced guy of the bunch in Britt Barefoot.

The kickers are a little banged up right now, but Coach Duggan is hopeful that his kicking squad will be ok for the season.

"We are a little banged up right now in the kicking game, but I feel we will be ok for the season" said Duggan.

USM is comfortable with the short range field goals, as Justin Estes has shown a good amount of consistency in that area. The long range stuff is still lacking, however.

"Justin Estes has had a consistent camp inside the 25 and with the PATs" said Duggan.

Southern Miss has a new face at Punter as Peter Boehme looks to be the favorite to win those duties.

"We are hoping that Peter Boehme can punt the ball consistently" said Duggan "He has been great with his get off times, but we still have to work with his hang time."

The kickoffs and long range field goal situations is still an area for concern, but USM should do ok in this area as long as Daniel Hrapmann is healthy.

"Hrapmann just came back from a really sore quad so hopefully he will be able to help us with the kickoff situation" said Duggan.

Another thing that the Eagles could utilize is the Rugby-style punt with Austin Davis.

"If Peter can do his job well then there is no reason to use it, but it is a weapon that we have and may use" said Duggan.

USM will have to play better in this area then they did last year if their huge expectations are to be met. While I think that they have improved in Special Teams, I still believe that they are a long way from where they need to be and that could cost them during the season.
