Graeter Flying High

The Southern Miss baseball team is coming off the best year that the school has ever had and the prospects are taking notice. One such prospect is Pearl River Community College's Ashley Graeter. Graeter got an offer from the Eagles last Saturday and made his commitment earlier this week. Today we talk to him about his commitment.

So why did Ashley decide to sign with Southern Miss?

"First of all, they just have a really good program" said Graeter "They have a past record of going to the regionals a lot and obviously Omaha last year."

The location of USM also played a big factor in his decision, as Graeter calls Poplarville, MS his hometown.

"Well on top of being a successful program, I like the fact that it is so close to home" said Graeter.

Graeter had been talking to many schools that were on the virge of offering, but the only other one that he was offered from was Southeastern Louisiana.

"Well Southern Miss is just a better program, no disrespect to Southeastern" said Graeter "But Southern Miss just got back from Omaha and they go to regionals every year."

This has been a dream of Ashley's ever since he was little, but he is just happy that he was able to make the decision early.

"It feels good to make the decision before the start of my sophomore season to take the pressure off of me" said Ashley "Now I can focus on baseball instead of trying to get people to see me."

Ashley is a very versatile player, but he is unsure exactly how the Eagles will be using him whenever he arrives on campus next fall.

"Well the way the coaches talked they are losing a second baseman and a third baseman after this year so hopefully I will be able to be one of those guys that can come in and play everyday" said Graeter.
