Cardinal Top Beavers 5-2 To Open Series

The Stanford Cardinal opened their series with the Oregon State Beavers Thursday night and behind the arm of John Hudgins and the bat of Donny Lucy, were victorious by a 5-2 score. Hudgins tossed his third complete game of the season while Lucy rapped out three hits including his first home run of the year. With the win, Stanford has now won a season-high seven consecutive games. Read on for a complete recap.

The Cardinal continue to get outstanding pitching from John Hudgins as the junior righthander went the distance tonight at Sunken Diamond.  Hudgins improved his record to 7-2 on the season as he gave up just six hits, walked two, and struck out ten.  At the plate, Donny Lucy finished 3-for-4 with a homer while a three-run fifth inning keyed the Stanford victory.

Stanford jumped on the scoreboard first with a single run in the bottom of the first.  With two outs, OSU starter Ben Rowe walked Carlos Quentin and then Ryan Garko stepped up and smoked a double to the left center field gap to score Quentin for the early 1-0 lead.

The Beavers would respond against Hudgins though with a run of their own in the top of the second.  Chris Biles walked with one out, advanced to second on a ground out, and scored when catcher Paul Richie delivered a clutch two-out single.  Richie though was gunned down trying to steal second by Ryan Garko which has been a recurring theme this season as Garko has now thrown out 40% of attempted base stealers.

The Cardinal threatened to score in the bottom of the second as Lucy doubled with one out and then Jonny Ash walked to put two runners on.  But Tobin Swope popped out and Sam Fuld was robbed of a hit when OSU first baseman Andy Jarvis made a diving stop of a hard ground ball to end the inning.

Each team went down 1-2-3 in the third and then the Beavers pushed across a run in the fourth to take their first lead of the game.  With one out, Andy Jarvis singled and moved to second when Hudgins uncorked a wild pitch.  The next batter up was cleanup hitter Tony Calderon and the Beaver shortstop came through with a double to easily score Jarvis to put OSU in front, 2-1.

Stanford was retired in order by Rowe in the fourth, but erupted for three scores in the bottom of the fifth.  Swope got things started with a one-out bunt single.  Fuld then ripped a double to right center field to score Swope which tied the game at 2-2.  After Brian Hall flied out to deep center, Carlos Quentin hit a high flyball into shallow right center field.  OSU center fielder Aaron Mathews was playing very deep and had a long way to go to get the ball.  Second baseman Chris Kunda did not get a good jump on it as he was drifting back while right fielder Chris Biles came charging in and made a diving effort, but was unable to come up with it.  Quentin raced into second with a double as Fuld scored to give Stanford a 3-2 lead.  The Cardinal weren't done though as Garko was intentionally walked and then Danny Putnam lined a single up the middle to score Quentin with Stanford's third run of the inning.

The Cardinal added another run in the sixth to go ahead 5-2 when Donny Lucy led off with a home run to left center field.  John Hudgins, meanwhile, was easily setting down the OSU hitters.  Hudgins worked perfect 1-2-3 fifth and sixth innings picking up three K's in the process.  Oregon State had runners at the corners, on a double and a walk, with one out in the seventh, but Hudgins got a strike out and a ground out to get out of the jam.  The Beavers went down in order in the eighth and managed only a two-out double in the ninth.  Hudgins struck out Levi Webber to end the game and give Stanford the victory.

Game Notes:
* Final line for John Hudgins : 9 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB, 10 SO.  Hudgins is now 7-2 with a 2.90 ERA.  In his last three starts, Hudgins is 3-0 with a 1.04 ERA (3 ER in 26 IP)

* Donny Lucy was the only Stanford hitter to record a multi-hit game today as he finished 3-for-4 with a double and a home run.  The ball was not carrying well at all tonight as Stanford clubbed numerous deep fly outs that likely would have been home runs during the day.

* Carlos Quentin extended his hitting streak to 23 games with his double in the fifth inning.  Quentin went 1-for-3.

* This was Stanford's seventh consecutive win which is their longest winning streak of the season.

* OSU starter Ben Rowe, who threw a complete game four-hitter in beating Stanford last season, went the distance again today.  He gave up five runs on eight hits, walked four, and struck out two.
