Card Claim Series Victory With 10-0 Rout

The Stanford Cardinal won their eighth consecutive series with a 10-0 victory over the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday afternoon at Sunken Diamond. Mark Romanczuk hurled 7 2/3 quality innings while Danny Putnam clubbed two homers and drove home five. Read on for a complete recap.

The Stanford Cardinal had little difficulty putting away the Oregon State Beavers in the rubber game of their three-game series this afternoon at Sunken Diamond.  Danny Putnam led the offensive charge with two homers and five RBI while Mark Romanczuk improved to 8-0 with 7 2/3 quality innings.  The Cardinal scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away and give them their eighth straight series win.

Stanford jumped on the scoreboard early with three runs in the bottom of the first thanks to a Putnam three-run homer.  With two outs and nobody on, OSU starter Stephen Copeland walked Carlos Quentin and then hit Ryan Garko with a pitch to put two runners on.  Up stepped Putnam and the sophomore left fielder delivered a three-run home run to left center field.

Mark Romanczuk was having to work in-and-out trouble throughout most of the early innings today.  Oregon State had a runner at third and one out in the first, but Romanczuk recorded two strike outs to get out of the jam.  In the third, Romanczuk walked the leadoff batter and then another walk three batters later put two runners on.  But with runners at second and third and two outs, Romanczuk struck out #4 hitter Tony Calderon to keep the shutout alive.

Levi Webber led off the fourth inning with a single, the first hit of the game for Oregon State.  Two batters later, Romanczuk issued another walk, but got back-to-back fly outs to end the inning.  In the fifth, Kerisi Reynolds drew a one out walk, Romanczuk's sixth free pass of the afternoon, but a double play off the bat of Andy Jarvis kept the Beavers off the scoreboard.

Meanwhile, the Stanford hitters were being shutdown by Copeland.  Copeland worked perfect 1-2-3 second, third, and fourth innings to keep the score 3-0.  Stanford got a leadoff double in the fifth from Jonny Ash, but he was eventually stranded at third base.  Finally in the sixth inning, the Cardinal broke through.  Carlos Quentin got things started with a line drive double to left field.  After Garko popped out, Danny Putnam launched his second home run of the game, a blast to left field to put Stanford in front 5-0.  The Cardinal weren't done though as Donny Lucy singled, Chris Carter walked, and Jonny Ash singled to load the bases.  Tobin Swope was up next and the senior shortstop bounced a ball into left field for a two-run single and a 7-0 Stanford lead.  Fuld then hit a hard smash at third base that was booted by OSU third baseman Mark Jackson which allowed another run to score.  After Brian Hall struck out, Quentin picked up his second hit of the inning as he singled home Swope and then Garko singled home Fuld for the seventh tally of the bottom of the sixth and the tenth Cardinal run of the game.

At this point, Romanczuk was in cruise control on the mound.  Oregon State got a two-out single in the bottom of the sixth, but Romanczuk worked himself out of the inning unscored upon.  He threw a perfect 1-2-3 seventh and then retired the first two hitters of the eighth inning before being pulled in favor of Matt Manship.  Manship set down the final four hitters of the game with ease and Stanford had a 10-0 victory.
