Card Rout Gaels For 8th Straight Win

The Stanford Cardinal won their season-high eighth consecutive game tonight with a 10-1 thrashing of the Saint Mary's Gaels. Seven Cardinal pitchers, led by Mark Jecmen, combined on a five-hitter while Ryan Garko and Brian Hall led the offensive attack. Read on for a complete recap.

There wasn't a lot of drama tonight at the ballpark as the Stanford Cardinal scored ten runs in the first five innings and cruised to a 10-1 win over the Saint Mary's Gaels.  Ryan Garko and Brian Hall led the offensive attack while Mark Jecmen picked up his first collegiate win with three solid innings to start the game.  Perhaps more importantly, the Arizona State Sun Devils lost 6-1 tonight to Oregon State which reduces Stanford's magic number to 3 to clinch the Pac-10 title outright.

The Cardinal jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning.  With one out, Brian Hall singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and then scored on Ryan Garko's single to center field.  After Danny Putnam reached on a fielder's choice, Jed Lowrie doubled down the right field line to score Putnam with Stanford's second run of the inning.

The Cardinal then added three more tallies in the bottom of the second to increase their lead to 5-0.  Donny Lucy reached on an error to start the frame and then Tobin Swope was hit by a pitch two batters later.  Sam Fuld's single loaded the bases and then Hall scored two with a double.  Garko extended the lead to 5-0 with a sacrifice fly which scored Fuld.

Meanwhile, sophomore Mark Jecmen got the starting assignment tonight and looked very sharp on the hill.  The towering righthander walked the leadoff batter in the first, but got out of the inning with consecutive strikeouts and a ground out.  In the second, Jecmen gave up a leadoff single, but a strike out and a double play ended the inning.  Jecmen retired the first two batters in the third and then Delaney Gallagher doubled to deep right field to put a runner in scoring position.  The next hitter was Bryan Byrne and the Gaels #3 batter blooped a single into left to score Gallagher with what turned out to be Saint Mary's only run of the game.  Jecmen set down the next hitter to end the inning and keep the score at 5-1.

After going down quietly in the bottom of the third, Stanford busted the game open with three runs in the fourth.  John Mayberry, Jr. and Tobin Swope both singled to start the inning and then Fuld doubled to score Mayberry to make the score 6-1.  After Hall flied out, Garko doubled home Swope and Fuld for an 8-1 Cardinal advantage.

Stanford completed their scoring with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth.  Consecutive doubles by Chris Carter and Donny Lucy to open the inning produced a run while Lucy would later score on an error.  Coach Marquess emptied his bench after the fifth inning bringing in reserves Jonny Ash, Chris Minaker, John Hester, and Chris Lewis.  Ash was at third, Minaker at second, Hester the DH, and Lewis was in right.

Six Stanford relievers combined to shutout the Gaels over the final six innings with each reliever tossing a scoreless frame.  Drew Ehrlich worked the fourth throwing a 1-2-3 inning with 2 K's.  Jonny Dyer fired a perfect 1-2-3 fifth inning with a couple of strikeouts.  In the sixth, Billy Paganetti allowed a single and hit a batter, but got out of the inning without allowing any runs.  Ryan McCally gave up a one-out single in the seventh, but induced the next hitter to hit into double play to end the inning.  Kodiak Quick worked around a two-out walk to throw a scoreless eighth while Matt Manship struck out two and walked one in the ninth.

Game Notes:
* Mark Jecmen went the first three innings tonight yielding one run on three hits.  He walked only one and struck out four.

* Ryan Garko (2-for-2, 2B, 4 RBI) and Brian Hall (3-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) led the offense.  Garko now has 72 RBI on the year which is only one RBI short of entering Stanford's single-season top 10 RBI list.

* Every starter in the lineup, with the exception of Danny Putnam, had at least one hit tonight.

* Golden Spikes finalist Carlos Quentin did not start in today's game (his first non-start of the year) as he was given the evening off.  Only Sam Fuld and Tobin Swope have now started in every game this season.
