Update: Fla. DB commit Drew Madhu

Plant High School (Tampa, Fla.) defensive back Drew Madhu committed to Stanford after earning an offer at a Cardinal camp last summer. Now recovered from a head injury that forced him out of action for a few games this season, Madhu spoke with The Bootleg earlier this week about his season and his Cardinal future.

"Yeah, [the concussion has] come and past, we still had a real good season," Drew Madhu said. "We actually have [the Florida 8A state title game] this coming Saturday."

Stanford coaches have maintained close contact with Madhu since he made his commitment. His recruiter, offensive line coach Mike Bloomgren, has already made an in-home visit, and several defensive coaches have watched, or plan to watch, Madhu live.

"It's been great," Madhu said. "I have a lot of communication with coaches over the phone, Facebook. They've started popping in a little more in person. Coach Tarver actually came down and watched this past game, which was real good. And then I'm hoping Coach Mason, looks like he'll be down here for the state game."

Madhu's feedback from the Cardinal coaches has been positive.

"That they really like the way I play, the physicality I bring," Madhu said.

While some have speculated his that physicality would pave the way for a transition to linebacker from safety, the Cardinal still like Madhu in the secondary, where he'll utilize his versatility.

"In Stanford's scheme, if you're at safety, you're playing corner as well, you're coming down to the box, you're moving around, so it's that corner/safety combo," Madhu said. "But they also expect me to step down to the box in some nickel as well, so you have to be ready to play everything. And I like that, I'm happy."

Before Madhu begins his Cardinal career, however, he must gain admission to the school. He received a copy of the Stanford application earlier this season, and is nearing the end of the admissions process.

"I received this real thick packet in the mail a little while ago," Madhu said. "Scanning through it, I thought it was going to be pretty easy, then I started digging into it and I was in a whole other world for a little while, but we knocked it out pretty fast. We sent that in a few weeks ago and coach Lance Anderson actually got back to me. I needed to change a few things, we got that done, so he met with admissions [Tuesday], and we'll see where that is.

"Hopefully I'll find out before Christmas."

Madhu, who claims he's a "solid" Cardinal commitment, will take his official visit to The Farm for the Cardinal's big recruiting weekend in mid-January. He also hopes to fly to see Stanford in person at the Fiesta Bowl.
