Texas DT Ikenna Nwafor admitted, committed

Blessed by a second consecutive season of good health, Cistercian High School (Irving, Tex.) defensive lineman Ikenna Nwafor shot up the Scout.com rankings after a stellar senior season. The three-star recruit, who committed to the Cardinal last summer, spoke with The Bootleg about his improvement, and his recent admission to the school.

"I felt I made a pretty big improvement," Ikenna Nwafor said. "Last summer was a very good summer for me. I worked hard and learned the intricacies of being a defensive lineman.

"First of all my conditioning [improved]. I was able to run longer throughout the season and also didn't get injured. This was my second season where I didn't get injured. Pass rush, I worked a lot on that over the summer. Getting quicker, working on the moves, learning how to read offensive linemen, and it paid off."

Nwafor's hard work in the classroom also paid dividends. After submitting his Stanford application in September, he found out he was admitted to the school last month.

"It was crazy," Nwafor said. "I sent it in but hadn't heard back in like a month and was kind of nervous, maybe they didn't get it or I didn't get in. But Coach Sanford called me and said, ‘I have some good news for you, you got in.' I remember freaking out, I was so excited."

Nwafor has maintained steady contact with Sanford, along with Cardinal head coach David Shaw, since his commitment.

"I've been talking to coach Sanford, I talk to him on a pretty much weekly basis," Nwafor said. "I talk to Coach Shaw every once in a while, throughout the season he would check up on me. Those are the two main guys."

Sanford recently paid Nwafor a pair of visits.

"We've actually had an in-home visit and another, he came to a basketball game," Nwafor said. "[The in-home visit] mostly was just for him to meet my mother. My mom has been e-mailing him for over a year now, but they've never actually met. That was cool for her to put a face to a name. She really liked him.

"The second visit he hung out with me and my brothers, got to know them a little bit."

Nwafor will take his official visit to Stanford for the Card's big recruiting weekend in mid-January.

He has no other trips planned, and claims he's still a solid verbal commit to Stanford.

"Vanderbilt and Purdue came on pretty strong towards November but after I got in I explained to them that I was done," Nwafor said. "Right now, I am a Stanford Cardinal. Pretty solid about that."
