Lombardi: Peter, you're from North Carolina but you committed to Stanford back in June. So, you're willing to come a long way. What do you like about the school so much?
Kalambayi: It's just a great place to be. The atmosphere is great out there. The academics are top-of-the-line, too. Since the football team is great, too, it was everything I was looking for in a school.
Lombardi: Your style of play has been likened to a player who's currently at Stanford, Chase Thomas. Would you say that you have a lot of stuff in common with him?
Kalambayi: Yeah, I would say so. I have a pretty good motor, I would say. I like to get after the quarterback, really. I liken my style of play to anyone who likes to get after the quarterback. When I'm out there, that drives me. I'm still learning, but I also want to make my own game.
Lombardi: By your 'own game,' do you mean you want to be someone who excels in pass coverage, too? How would you evaluate where you are in pass coverage?
Kalambayi: Well, you can always get better at that. At my school, I cover a lot of slot receivers in man coverage, so I get a lot of practice at it. I don't really rush as much in my school. Instead, I'm getting a lot of practice covering right now.
Lombardi: What about the Stanford coaching staff? Do they see you as a pass rusher? Have they talked much about where exactly they see you playing?
Kalambayi: Right now, they're talking mostly about outside [linebacker]. They've said they can see me playing some inside linebacker, but most of the talk is at outside linebacker.
Lombardi: Obviously a big part of Stanford is what happens academically. So, moving away from football, what do you want to get out of your college experience in the classroom?
Kalambayi: I'm not sure of what major I'd like to be yet, but I'm planning on finding a major I really like pursuing. I know all the classes and majors at Stanford are good, so from that perspective it doesn't matter which one I take. But, I want to find one that I like and complete it to the best of my ability.
Lombardi: Well, there will be plenty of time to decide in the future, especially since you still have a full year of high school before you move out to college. What are your team's goals for your senior season?
Kalambayi: Well, my freshman and my sophomore years, we won the state championship. Last year, we got knocked out in the second round. So, we've gotta win that state championship again. [Kalambayi's season got underway on August 17]
Lombardi: How about your personal goals?
Kalambayi: I just want to make myself an all-around better football player. Even after the season, I'm going to be working hard to get stronger and better. Academically, I'm taking some AP classes, so it'll be good preparation for when I get to Stanford.
Lombardi: Sounds like you have a heck of a year in store. Good luck and thanks for your time, Peter.
Kalambayi: Thank you, David.
