Track & Field 2013: The Field Events

We continue our preview of the track and field team with look at the field events. "Life is a carousel," sang The Band, and that carries forward to field events, where three or four events can be going on at once and your head spins from one direction to the next.

Long Jump: School Record, Jackie Edwards, 21-11 ¾.
Junior Karynn Dunn is No. 4 in the school record book at 21-6, which was 14th among all Americans last season. Senior Jordan Merback is very good in the triple jump and has a best here of 19-4. Freshman Kayla Walker's best is 19-10 ¾. Dunn will be a potential NCAA point winner.

Triple Jump: School Record, Erica McLain, 46-5 ¼
Everyone pales to Erica but Merback is at 42-2 and Dunn 42-1 ¼. They both should score at the Pac 12 Meet.

High Jump: School Record, Lisa Bernhagen, 6-2.
Senior Elaine Patten jumped 5-8 ¾ this past weekend. Freshman Khiana Lowe has a 5-6 best.

Pole Vault: School Record, Katerina Stefanidi, 14-8 ¼.
We return our No. 2 all-time, Junior Ellie McCardell at 13-7 ¾, and our No. 8 all-time, sophomore Katie Zingheim at 12-9 ½.

Shot Put: School Record Jillian Camarena, 59-6 ¾.
Senior Alyssa Wisdom is No. 6 all-time at 51-9 ¾, but has reached 55-8 ¼ indoors this season. If repeated outdoors, that effort would move her to No. 3; either way, she will challenge for Pac-12 points. Sophomore Rebecca Hammer is No. 9 with a 48-9 ½. Freshman Shavana Talbert has a best of 45-9 ¾.

Discus: School Record Carol Cady, 207-8
It's been 10 years since someone broke into the top 10 and Hammer did it March 2 with a 171-10 throw for No. 7. This mark puts Hammer in the quest for Pac-12 points. Christina Medina is a sophomore at 140-4.

Hammer: School Record, Sarah Hopping, 219-8
Appropriately enough, Hammer threw the hammer 152-2 on March 2. Wisdom has a best of 159-4.

Javelin: School Record Brianna Bain 180-2.
Bain is just a sophomore and was the NCAA runner-up, the Pac-12 champion and the No. 9 American last season. Freshman Kieman Haggery has a best of 140-1 and was one of the top preps last season.

Long Jump, School Record, James Lofton, 26-11 ¾
In the last 22 years, we have added one long jumper to the top-10 list. Sad. Junior Patton Jones went 23-11 last year. Sophomore High Jumper Dartis Willis jumped 23-11 ½.

Triple Jump: School Record, Allen Meredith, 52-3
Sophomore Darian Brooks jumped 50-2 for No. 9 last year. Jones has a best of 48-9w, while high jumper Jules Shape has a best of 48-11.

High Jump: School Record, Brian Marshall, 7-5 ¾
Willis at 7-1 ½ and Sharpe at 7-1 are fifth and seventh all-time for Stanford. But Sharpe has gone 7-3 three times this indoor season. His best is 7-3 ¼.

Pole Vault, School Record, Toby Stevenson, 18-9 ¼
Freshman Garrett Starkey comes in at 17-0. Sophomore Dalton Duvio went 17-1 in high school, 16-8 last season.

Shot Put: School Record, Terry Albritton, 70-7
Geoffrey Tabor is a senior with a 58-4 ½ best, No. 8 all time. He also has gone 3 inches farther indoors, and 58-5 indoors this year. Jeremy Hines missed last season but has an indoor best of 57-4 ¼. Freshman Nick Budincich went 62-5 with the high school shot.

Discus: School Record, Michael Robertson, 210-1
Tabor is No. 6 all-time at 192-6 and will contend for points at the national level. Footballer Trent Murphy threw 195 with the high school weight and Budincich 192. Hines has a best of 156-7.

Hammer: School Record, David Popejoy, 240-10.
Sophomore Lucas Rowley threw 182-11 at the first outdoor meet.

Javelin: School Record, Chad Wassink, 234-0
Junior Aaron Konigsberg has a best of 216-2 and two freshman, Andy Rondema, 197-1 and Charlie Kerr, 186-9 will contribute.
