Clardy's Corner: No Sympathy for the Devil

If you miss the days when you could look across the sideline and call Stanford's opposing head coach a villain, this week's game against Arizona State is for you.

Since the Cardinal and the Sun Devils missed each other in last year's conference scheduling, this will be the first time Stanford will look on the opposite sideline and see Todd Graham. Arizona State's head coach came to Tempe under controversial circumstances in December 2011, when he bolted Pitt after less than one calendar year on the job.

Living in Pittsburgh, having dealt with Graham, and knowing many inside the Pitt program who were much closer to Graham than I was, I've actually been looking forward to writing this Corner for almost the last two years. Allow me to make the Stanford fan's proper introduction to Todd Graham.

You know the Rolling Stones song "Sympathy For The Devil," right? With Mick Jagger singing the lyrics while assuming the title role? Whenever I hear Graham speak, I hear that song. I almost want to go "whoo whooo!" in the background every time I hear his voice.

He's constantly telling you how great he is, what huge accomplishments he has been responsible for, and why trusting in him is a good idea (even when there is plenty of evidence to the contrary). He's a man of wealth and taste, and he's not afraid to show you how big and nice his house is. Nor, in a private moment, is he shy about telling you how much money he makes and the things his wife can buy because of it.

In his first year as a college head coach, Graham took a moribund Rice program and led them to their first bowl game in 45 years. The Owls rewarded Graham with a contract extension. Graham signed it, then bolted for Tulsa just days later.

After two years at Tulsa, Graham signed a 10-year contract extension. "I'm bought in and sold out to Tulsa," Graham said. Two years later, the price was right for Graham to head to Pittsburgh.

Pitt immediately gave Graham the spotlight, and the coach happily hogged it for himself. Graham talked incessantly about the greatness of his "high octane" offense and its "left lane, hammer-down" philosophy. You saw his face on buses and billboards all over town. You couldn't flip on a TV or a radio without hearing his Texas drawl saying "high-octane" ad nauseum. He preached that his players would learn the true meanings of integrity, loyalty, and family.

But as the season approached, something didn't seem right. Sometimes he would say two completely different things on the same subject during the same interview. The act was starting to wear tired, and the season hadn't even kicked off yet.

Graham butchered his relationship with his quarterback, forcing him to run an offense he didn't truly have the skills to run effectively. Then, on the rare nights when the square peg fit the round hole, Graham shrugged it off and still found ways to rip him publicly, once calling a 419-yard passing effort "average."

By season's end, about the only thing Pitt had to show for all the hype was a middling 6-6 record. His catchphrases had become punch lines, and many were tuning out his message. So when Arizona State fired Dennis Erickson, Graham asked Pitt for permission to talk to the Sun Devils about the job. Pitt denied Graham's request. Graham countered by shooing a Pitt official off his doorstep, e-mailing his resignation, leaving his staff in the lurch, and letting his players find out by having a team staffer text them with his farewell message.

The next thing anyone knew, Graham was tweeting a picture of him and his wife on a private plane heading to Arizona and decked out in Sun Devil colors, then addressing Arizona State faithful with the exact same phrases ("family", "character", "honesty", "dream job") he had used just eleven months before in Pittsburgh.

Of course, Graham has had plenty of practice with introductory press conferences. And he certainly has the script down.

Graham upon accepting the head coaching job at Rice in January 2006: "I've dreamed of this day since I was in the seventh grade." Graham at his introductory press conference at Arizona State nearly six years later: "This is a dream come true for me."

Graham, while being introduced at Pitt in January 2011: "It's an honor for me to be at Pitt. Tony Dorsett, Dan Marino, Mike Ditka, Mark May." Graham, while being introduced at Arizona State in December 2011: "How about, let's play [defense] like Pat Tillman and Terrell Suggs played it. How about we spin that ball like Jake Plummer and Danny White?"

Graham, describing his offense to the Pitt media: "Fast tempo, high octane. We'll be the most explosive team in the country." Graham, describing his offense to the Arizona State media: "Obviously our offense is going to be high-octane. It's going to be quick-striking, explosive. Our whole deal is about explosive plays."

At the time, everything Graham says sounds great. But as his body of work builds and as his actions (and/or the team's results) start to contradict his words, the truth often (finally) comes out. Here's what Graham told ESPN.com about his role at Pitt in May 2011: "This is the best job I've ever had." And here's what Graham told FoxSports.com exactly one year later: "I made a mistake. The mistake was I probably should have never gone to Pittsburgh in the first place."

So when many here in Pittsburgh saw Todd Graham speaking in front of a backdrop covered with flaming pitchforks, well, that picture seemed to speak for itself.

Is Graham unique? No. Is he the first college head coach to talk the talk, then promptly walk to a higher-paying, higher-profile job at the first opportunity? No. But fortunately the Pac-12 also has coaches like Mike Riley, who seems to legitimately care about his players, truly practices what he preaches, and possesses a balance and a perspective that so many other coaches seem to lack.

As for Graham's tenure in Tempe, so far, so good. He is bringing a Sun Devil squad to Stanford that will be a serious, serious test for the Cardinal this weekend. He has some good players (Will Sutton is off to a slow start, but he is still a force), and his offense has lived up to the hype thus far. Todd Graham could well be on the way to waking up the sleeping giant that is Arizona State football.

But when the jobs at Nebraska and Texas open up, you know Graham is going to be making a lot of phone calls to the 402 and 512 area codes. And you'll be hearing him talk about loyalty, character, and a high-octane offense at his next introductory press conference.

For years, Stanford fans had opposing coaches they could truly loathe (John McKay is still probably at the top of that list). If you miss those days and you need a Pac-12 head coach to treat as a villain, I present Todd Graham. Or, as he is perhaps more accurately known in some circles, Fraud Graham.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

Made the drive from Pittsburgh to West Point last week, and had a great time. Awesome to see all the Stanford fans who showed, as Cardinal red took up half of one sideline, a full end zone, and two other corners of Michie Stadium. Great to hang out with Scott Reiss and Todd Husak in the radio booth. And incredible to experience the campus and the cadets. Fantastic experience…

John Elway on the sidelines. Barry Sanders keeping a low profile outside the locker room after the game. Sports Illustrated's Peter King talking to David Shaw, then introducing himself to Josh Mauro in the press room. With all the NFL dignitaries in the house, there were a few moments where I forgot I was at a college game…

The Quote of The Week comes from David Shaw, when I asked him after the game how explosive the Cardinal have been this season: "So far, so good. We still left some points out there for the second game in a row. That corner route to Devon [Cajuste], gosh, we just barely missed that. But the emphasis is there because we have the guys to do it. Since the day Chris Owusu got hurt the last time, we haven't been able to put this kind of speed on the field before."

I completely forgot to acknowledge this when it happened, but congratulations to Joe Karlgaard, the former Stanford assistant athletic director who is now the athletic director at Rice! He was KZSU's play-by-play man for Stanford football during the 1995 season. We called some fun games that year. Good to see him in the corner office again…

Big, big win for UCLA, especially under the difficult circumstances…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… The good news: Johnny Football will have better numbers this year. The bad news: with that Texas A&M defense, he'll need every last one of those yards. Yikes. Not exactly the wrecking crew, are they?

PAC-12 PICKS

Arizona State-Stanford is the only Pac-12 game this week. Since I don't pick Cardinal conference games, the picks will make their (not so triumphant) return next week!
