Clardy's Corner: Greatest Near-Miss Ever?

What if the Greatest Upset Ever didn't happen at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on October 6, 2007? What if it had happened instead at the Rose Bowl on October 31, 1998?

It seemed appropriate for Stanford to meet UCLA in Pasadena on Halloween 1998. This matchup seemed custom-made for the holiday, with UCLA the top-ranked team in the first-ever BCS standings, and Stanford the overmatched opponent with only one win to its name.

It was going to be grisly. It was not going to be for the faint of heart. It was going to be a real horror show. It was Michael Myers versus Bambi. And Michael Myers was favored by 29 points.

Fans showed up to the Rose Bowl to see a high-powered offense, but the wrong one showed up. Instead of watching Cade McNown put the Bruins on the scoreboard early, often, and mercilessly, they saw Todd Husak lead the Cardinal through UCLA's agile and disruptive defense. Stanford led, 24-14 after three quarters.

The Bruins finally woke up in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns and taking their first lead of the game with 8:05 left. Undaunted, the Card drove on UCLA's frustrated defense again. With 4:19 remaining from the UCLA 27, Husak found Jeff Allen at the ten-yard line, running down the seam and streaking to the end zone. Stanford was about to take the lead back, with the unlikeliest of heroes playing a starring role.

But Allen never got there. Just before he reached the goal line, the ball was punched loose by UCLA's Marques Anderson. It rolled cruelly through the end zone before Bruin safety Larry Atkins pounced on it for the touchback. Stanford got no closer. The wise guys had predicted UCLA would win by four touchdowns. Instead, they won by only four points, 28-24.

Given how poorly the Cardinal had played to that point that year, and how highly the Bruins were regarded, that should have been a moral victory for Stanford. Sure as hell didn't feel like it, though. Right after the game, I zombie-walked to the parking lot, got in my buddy Ray's car, and we immediately drove back to the Bay Area. Didn't stick around Los Angeles and hang out with friends as planned. Just got in the car, pointed it north, and bolted. I don't think either of us said a word to each other until we got to Kettleman City. And that word was probably something that cannot be reprinted on a family entertainment-oriented website like this.

This season marks 15 years since that painfully memorable game. But still, even now, sometimes I wonder: What if Stanford had finished the job against the mighty Bruins that day? What if they had done in 1998 what it took them until 2007 to accomplish? Would the Cardinal have gone on a similar path from conference also-rans to national contenders? Would everything merely have been pushed up nine years, with 2004 being "the year"?

Obviously, it's impossible to say. But, forced to guess, I don't know if a win that day would have had the same impact as the Greatest Upset Ever.

Much of it probably comes from the fact that there is nothing like beating U$C in football. Nothing. Especially given how many times they thumped Stanford without mercy over the years. Especially when they are at the top of the polls. When you beat that kind of U$C team, you live forever. Meanwhile, the only time beating UCLA guarantees immortality is on the basketball court.

The window for Bruin football to dominate Los Angeles doesn't open very often, but it's wide open right now. UCLA football is good at the moment, and they could be very good in the years to come. But basketball will always rule in Westwood. And for Stanford, that is why, no matter how good it is to beat UCLA in football, beating U$C is always better.

Also, I don't think the program's infrastructure in 1998 would have been in place for Stanford to fully capitalize on the kinds of opportunities that resulted from beating U$C in 2007. Not from a recruiting standpoint. Not from a media relations standpoint. Not as far as support from the athletic department and the University at large were concerned. Those items weren't upgraded until Bob Bowlsby brought things into the 21st century.

And besides, 14 months after walking out of the Rose Bowl following that near-miss against UCLA, the Cardinal walked back in as Pac-10 Champions. That fact alone is probably a large reason why that close call with the Bruins isn't necessarily remembered as a big missed opportunity.

Then again, Oregon beat Washington in 1994. Arizona State's brief run at Rose Bowl glory in 1996 began with a huge win over Nebraska. Everyone has to start somewhere. For Stanford, maybe it could have started on that late Halloween afternoon in 1998.

A Stanford win over UCLA in 1998 could have helped the Cardinal get there. A Stanford win over UCLA on Saturday will help the Cardinal stay there this season. While beating UCLA this year wouldn't serve the same purpose it could have in 1998, a Cardinal win is so much more critical now.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

In last week's Corner, I wrote: "Usually by this time we've seen a handful of Appalachian State-type shockers. Not this season. Only one member of the AP's preseason top 10 has lost to an unranked team so far this year…Hopefully this changes once everyone gets deeper into conference play, but so far this season has been defined by too many huge blowouts, too few close calls, and zero major upsets." Hmmmm. Be careful what you wish for, no?...

My grandparents had Oakland Raiders season tickets for decades before finally giving them up last year. The night they lost the Super Bowl to Tampa Bay, I didn't call to check on them. Didn't know what kind of mood they would be in. So I called them the day after. My grandmother said, "Troy, after that game, we turned the TV off, popped the bottle of champagne, and had an enjoyable evening anyway!" It put things in perspective. So, after that game in Salt Lake City was over on Saturday, I shrugged, turned to my fiancée, popped a bottle of champagne, continued celebrating my birthday weekend, and had an enjoyable evening anyway…

Remember the days when all you needed to give Stanford huge problems was to take one or two fast guys, put them out on the perimeter, and give them the ball in open space? Utah brought those days back last week…

The good news? Ty Montgomery keeps coming up huge. And Kevin Hogan made some big throws on Stanford's final drive…

Nope, I wouldn't have called two passing plays on those final two snaps, either. But then again, if those plays that were called had worked, I wouldn't have complained…

Inside linebacking was particularly worrisome for Stanford against Utah. Jarek Lancaster seemed to struggle mightily, often getting lost in the traffic, then waving weakly as ballcarriers brushed by. He was pulled off the field midway through the 99-yard touchdown drive, but by then, the damage had already been done…

After the game, I got a text from a trusted Stanford Football follower: "We are not a national championship team. Oregon is." I nodded so hard my head almost flew off…

Well, what do you know: Lane Kiffin leaves town, and the Trojans finally start flinging the ball downfield. If U$C can develop a vertical component to their passing game, I may actually start thinking about picking them again…

Stat of The Week: this season, UCLA has outscored its opponents in the third quarter, 71-0…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… if you can, carve some time out to watch Florida State-Clemson this Saturday. Having seen Jameis Winston in person earlier this season, I can't wait to see how he fares against the Tigers…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… look, I wasn't too thrilled by the fans who cheered Matt Schaub's injury in Houston or did the wave while Calais Campbell was being ambulanced out of Candlestick Park, either. But I'm not going to call those incidents an indictment of our society as a whole. To me, it's just further proof that there are idiots in every single fan base. They just seem to be more vocal these days, that's all…
