Anthony Brown leads basketball to a rout

We'll start with the obvious. Texas Southern is, by quite a substantial margin, the worst team Stanford has faced, and probably will face, this season.

Outside of a pair of transfers in Aaric Murray and Jose Rodriguez, the Tigers don't offer much, if anything, else in the way of even mid-major Division I talent. To make matters worse, head coach Mike Davis plays just seven guys. Facing such inferior competition, you would certainly expect the Cardinal to dominate, and, for the most part, they did just that, blowing the game open early in the second half en route to a 97-71 victory Thursday night.

As if the deficiencies of a two-man show on offense weren't enough, Texas Southern actually fared worse on defense. The Tigers sat in an extremely soft 2-3 zone the entire game, one particularly prone to penetration and kick-out threes. The zone especially crumbled during a nine-minute stretch to start the second half. It was then that Stanford, due in large part to great looks and free runs to the rim, went on a 22-4 run, effectively putting Texas Southern away for good. The Cardinal did well to take advantage of good perimeter looks all night, connecting on 13-of-26 from distance for the game.

In a matchup against competition of this caliber, there really isn't much to say in terms of new offensive takeaways. Again, a lot of these looks were wide open, the type of shots even this Stanford team isn't getting in practice.

Nonetheless, the play of Anthony Brown is worth noting. The redshirt junior turned in perhaps the best performance of his Stanford career, connecting on 9 of 13 shots (including 3 of 5 threes) while also pulling down 10 rebounds. Indeed it was Brown's play at the end of the first half, in what was still very much a tight game (we'll get to that in a minute), that kick-started the Stanford run that spilled into the 22-4 blitz. With the offense stagnant and Stanford ahead by just two, Brown poured in nine points in the final two minutes and change of that first period. He buried two threes from the corner and another from deep on the left wing as time expired, sending Stanford into the locker room ahead by seven.

Yet it was Brown's play inside the arc that both impressed most and spoke most to his development. He attacked the basket hard and looked to finish strong, throwing down one dunk while just missing on another. Another pretty play came later in the second half, with Brown taking a couple of hard dribbles into the lane, coming to an abrupt stop, and nailing an elbow jumper. Most telling of all, however, was a sequence with seven minutes to go and the game long since decided. Brown fought on the glass and pulled down consecutive offensive rebounds, the second of which he kicked out to Aaron Bright, who hit a three pointer. Brown's skills, particularly his ability to shoot the basketball, have rarely been questioned during his time at Stanford. Rather, doubts about his motor, fair or not, are those that have persisted. If this game, and, in actuality, the entire body of work he's turned in these first five games, is any indication, it seems as though he's making a concerted effort to put these lingering concerns to rest. And thus far, he's fairing quite well in doing so.

Brown's emergence speaks rather emphatically to the offensive firepower of this Stanford team. In Brown, Chasson Randle, Dwight Powell, and Josh Huestis, you have four largely efficient scorers that could each conceivably get twenty points on a given night—if not all at once. You saw a glimpse of the type of blitz this team could put on, as we have in the majority of the games thus far, during that 22-4 run: Huestis and Randle knocking down threes, Powell and Brown attacking the basket. Even Aaron Bright, who's largely been a nonfactor this season, got into the mix off the bench. The senior had his best game of the year, having his way with that aforementioned Tigers zone to the tune of 12 points and six assists.

This is not to say that the offense is without its flaws. The lack of both a true point guard and a sustained half-court offensive philosophy will undoubtedly rear its ugly head at some point this season, especially against a good man-to-man defensive team. It is to say, however, that, by and large, this team seems to have enough individual talent to overcome those weaknesses. Stanford is not going to struggle for points this year; the offense is not the problem.

The same cannot be said about the defense. For the third straight game, Stanford turned in a poor first half. This time, the Cardinal gave up 44 points and seven three-pointers to the lowly Tigers. Texas Southern was far from alone in trotting out a soft zone Thursday night. Stanford surrendered far too many open looks early on, unable to keep up with any sort of ball movement. And were it not for Texas Southern missing a couple of good looks and shots right at the rim early in the second half, this game would have stayed tighter for much longer—Stanford offensive blitz or not.

With eight minutes to go in the game and Stanford up big, play-by-play man Ted Robinson asked his partner Jarron Collins if he thought Johnny Dawkins would stick to playing zone all year. Collins replied "yes," citing the fact that Stanford was extremely long and capable of disrupting opposing offenses. That certainly seems to be Dawkins' train of thought, as he has flashed very little man to man thus far. And while the zone has its glaring flaws, abandoning it for man is probably not the right call. Sure, it may result in more suffocating victories against the Texas Southerns of the world, but Dawkins knows full well that he does not have the quick athletes needed to play man in the long run. Best to get the zone down while he still can.

One of the primary problems with the zone right now, and really with the entire defense, is a lack of frontcourt depth. For starters, as noted before, Dwight Powell, Grant Verhoeven, Stefan Nastic, and Schuyler Rimmer are all suited to play in the middle and anchor the zone. Powell is so frequently out of position and off balance that he is a liability on the wing. You certainly can't question Verhoeven's effort, but he looks a little overmatched right now, especially when forced to guard the perimeter. He's repeatedly flying by guys early or flying into them late, picking up fouls in the process. Rimmer, similarly, is physically limited. To top it all off, the guards in the zone are often slow to get over to the wing and bounce these bigs back down to the corner, leaving their already vulnerable big men to try and guard two perimeter players.

Nastic has yet to be subjected to the apparent firestorm that is the wing position, but has struggled mightily in his own right anchoring the middle. He was bullied several times for position by the Texas Southern bigs, and in sixteen minutes pulled down just three rebounds. Only one of them came on the defensive end. That makes four rebounds in the past three games for Nastic.

Ideally, you hope that Rosco Allen can fill this void upon his return, providing this team with the athletic defensive big man it is sorely lacking as of now. Allen's return would presumably push Powell to the middle anchor, solidifying, alongside Huesits, a front line that at the very least will be improved athletically and on the glass.

Until then, Dawkins will have to tinker with the zone. You saw it at the beginning of the second half, with the zone taking on more of an extended match-up look. Stanford jumped ball screens, doubled post-ups, and looked to trap in the corners, creating a couple helter-skelter possessions that ended in Texas Southern turnovers. Admittedly, though, even that broke down. One sequence early in the second half in which four Stanford defenders rushed to trap a post player who had just corralled an offensive rebound sticks out in particular. Hopefully though, you can chalk that up to lack of practice and adjusting on the fly… hopefully. Regardless, you have to wonder if it's not an adjustment worth pursuing. For one, it grounds a team struggling with zone concepts (e.g. controlled close outs, bouncing down bigs, staying home) in some man-to-man principles. Moreover, in creating some chaos, it may also serve to mask some limitations of the current team.

So while there may not be anything new to take away from this game, it remains clear that Stanford must improve on the defensive end to reach its preseason goals. For while the Cardinal may very well develop into a team capable of outscoring many of its opponents, that is hardly a recipe for success. If anything, it's a recipe for a couple of impressive wins and a painfully large number of head-scratching losses.
