Clardy's Corner: Enjoying the Ride

In life, it's all about the journey, not the destination. Does that hold true when looking at Stanford football's incredible season? Read on for Troy's final Corner of the season!

Maybe I'm mellowing out in my old age. Maybe I'm doing a better job of putting things in perspective. Maybe it's because I have enough other things to worry about. But this year, I didn't think the world was coming to an end after Stanford dropped games to Utah and U$C.

Don't get it twisted: I wasn't thrilled, either. But my lows were certainly not as low as what some other Stanford fans experienced this season.

Then again, my highs this year weren't as high, either. I mean, I can't control what happens on the field. I'm not holed up in a dark room somewhere drawing up game plans. I'm not out there taking snaps. So why freak out every week, no matter the result? Life is too short for that, isn't it?

And this year, the results were magnificent. Another 11-win regular season, capped with another Pac-12 title, and resulting in another trip to the Rose Bowl.

I enjoyed the ride this year. I'm not so sure other Stanford fans did.

In last week's Corner, I pointed out that Oregon football has reached the point where a ten-win season can be considered a disaster. I don't think any Stanford fans would consider this season a disaster, but I suspect that some would consider it a disappointment. We're all happily making plans for Pasadena on January 1 again, yet some are still complaining about what could have been and are bummed out that we're not making plans for Pasadena on January 6 instead.

To each their own. It's a sign of the times, really. Heck, it's probably my fault in the first place for using message boards as a measuring stick for Stanford fan happiness. After all, some of us could win $10,000 cash, then complain that it's all in twenties.

In case you haven't noticed, there's a lot of negativity, noise, and insignificant drivel out there. It's a huge reason why I refuse to have a personal Twitter account. Generally, when people take to the Internet, they don't do it to tell you why they liked something. They do it to tell you why something sucks.

Everybody is a keyboard critic. Everybody has an opinion. Problem is, not everybody has the correct information. And not everybody has the courage to put their actual birth name on their opinions. Then again, if I was saying stupid, uninformed stuff on the Internet, I'm not sure I'd put my name on it, either.

Sports talk radio has become the same way, too. I have especially noticed it here in Pittsburgh, where the local sports teams matter. A lot. Here's the funny thing, though: if the local sports team wins, fans have nothing to say because there's nothing to complain about. But if the local sports team loses, phone lines are packed, torches and pitchforks are grabbed, and everyone is all too eager to tell you who should be benched or fired as a result.

I've noticed it more acutely in Pittsburgh, but I think it's also the case most other places nationwide. In all honesty, it's an increasing frustration of mine with my industry.

But some of the complaints I saw this season (and, more importantly, the "sky-is-falling" nature of these complaints) seemed out of place. Look, I go back to the days where CardinalManiacs had real, legitimate things to complain about. Back when the head coach truly was clueless on game days. Back when the Cardinal didn't have anywhere near the talent to compete. Back when the stadium was a depressing place to be on Saturdays. Back when people showed up out of obligation, not because the product was any good.

So when I think back to some of the things I noticed while doing my usual lurking on the BootBoard Plus—even after Stanford victories—I'm not sure some folks had a lot of fun watching this team this season. That's too bad, because while they were too busy finding fault with David Shaw's playcalling (hey, I don't like the wildcat either, but I'm not cursing and throwing stuff at my TV every time I see it), they missed watching one of the best teams in school history.

Oh, well. As I noted with Oregon last week, it's the price of progress, I guess. Besides, I'll take all the complaints the fans can dish out if it means I'm checking out plane flights to Los Angeles over New Years', as opposed to checking out our schedule every August to figure how Stanford can scratch out six wins. We're not too far removed from those days, you know.

As cool as Stanford Football was in the early 1970s, as dramatic as John Elway was to watch, as proud as some of Tyrone Willingham's teams made us, they can't hold a candle to what we have seen of late. The Card have won 46 games over the past four seasons. Stanford's total wins in the 2000's? 47. Let that sink in for a moment.

I've heard others say it, and I'll steal the line here. Folks, these are the good old days for Stanford Football. Enjoy the ride.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

How about a couple of quick Clardy's Corner Awards?

Play of the Year: Kodi Whitfield's one-handed snare against UCLA. I leaped off my couch when that happened. I don't think I've seen a Stanford receiver make a catch like that since Teyo Johnson's one-handed grab against UCLA that put him in Sports Illustrated

Game of the Year: Oregon. Yes, it had a bit too much drama at the end, but an incredible win at home on national television against a potent team in our highest-stakes game of the year. What a statement that night was…

Defensive Stud: Trent Murphy. I love Shayne Skov, and his Polamalu-like snap-count jumping at the goal line last week was one of the plays of the year. But Murphy was more consistent, and every bit as dangerous. Ask Connor Halliday for his thoughts on this…

Team MVP: Tyler Gaffney. Self-explanatory. Plus, he became the fiancée's favorite player, so bonus points for that, too…

Fun fact: Last Saturday, Todd Graham stood to earn a $230,000 bonus for winning the Pac-12 Championship Game, a $250,000 bonus for an 11-win season, and a $153,333 bonus for playing in a BCS non-title game. For those of you without calculators, that's an extra $633,333 in bonuses. Just for winning one game. So whenever ESPN's cameras caught Graham with that same look MC Hammer has on his face when he's at the ATM, that's probably why…

When Arizona State got their fastest guys the ball in space on the perimeter, they did damage (see D.J. Foster's 65-yard touchdown). But they didn't do it anywhere near enough. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. But, once again, the Sun Devils' offensive game plan did them no favors against the Cardinal…

Remember how much more explosive Stanford's passing game seemed to be earlier in the season? Good to see it return. Take a bow for those big throws, Kevin Hogan

Remember the last time Stanford met Michigan State in a bowl game? I do! A clip of yours truly and Ray Salloom (aka boomboom2000) on the call for KZSU's broadcast of the 1996 Sun Bowl…

By the way, Michigan State's head coach that day in El Paso was a fellow named Nick Saban. Whatever became of him, anyway?

Instead of playing in Pasadena for a national championship, Oregon will basically be playing a road game against Texas in the Alamo Bowl. Not gonna lie: I got a little chuckle out of that…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… I had a feeling Stanford would struggle against U$C. I had a feeling Oregon was walking into a trap in Tucson. I had a feeling Ohio State wouldn't get past Michigan State. What happened in all three? Just saying…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… maybe in an ideal world Florida State-Alabama would have been a better way to go, but I have no quarrel with the matchup we have. Don't look now, but the BCS got it right. Again…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… so…who takes second in the Heisman Trophy voting this year?

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… folks, days like last Sunday are specifically why you get the NFL RedZone channel…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… if you needed further proof of the idiocy of holding the Super Bowl in an outdoor, cold-weather stadium, check out the scene from this Sunday's Lions-Eagles game. I'll be honest: I hope this year's Super Bowl is a weather disaster so it never happens again…

Thank you for following another season of Clardy's Corners! Hope you had as much fun reading them and sharing your opinions on them as I do writing them. I'm actually back in San Francisco for my annual December break, and you know a visit to The Farm is in order while I'm here. It's always great to be home. Happy holidays to you and yours…and see you in Pasadena!
