Rose Bowl: Third Quarter Rewind

Stanford entered halftime with a 17-14 lead, but Michigan State quickly tied the game in the third quarter before taking control of the tempo heading into the fourth. Here's Daniel Novinson's thorough look back at the Pasadena shift in power.

My halftime adjustment would be to give less cushion in the defensive backfield. I think Stanford took the bend but don't break thing a bit too far in the first half, as the Spartans have 198 passing yards at the break. On the first play of the second half, Derek Mason does just that, with Alex Carter harrying a State receiver into a bobble and drop. But the very next snap, State exploits the in the slot – a Stanford defense's traditional weak spot (or, really, against any spread attack in space), and where they've struggled so far today. Sure enough, Bennie Fowler, who had the big catch before the half, catches open, speeds past a would-be tackler and stiff-arms the cavalry for another 25 yards. Ed Reynolds and Jordan Richards finally get him down, but not until after a 60-yard gain. Maybe Stanford can go to more of a nickel or dime look, as they're getting torn up in the slot, and MSU hasn't done too much running. (Their lead back, Jeremy Langford, has 34 yards on nine carries.)

State stalls, but All-Frosh kicker Michael Gieger, who has only missed once all year, is true from 31. Advantage to MSU should this go to overtime, given the strength of their kicker and the questions surrounding Jordan Williamson's leg. More immediately, we are retied at 17-all, our first tie since 0-0.

Michigan State 17, Stanford 17, 12:56 remaining, third quarter
After Ryan Hewitt catches in the flat for an 11-yard gain (Ed: where was that when Michigan State was jamming the interior the rest of the way?), Kevin Hogan goes long to a double-covered Michael Rector. The pass is just past Rector's outstretched fingertips, but instead lands right in Trae Waynes' hands for the Spartans. I like the aggressive call, and it's not an awful outcome – the equivalent of a 44-yard punt with no return, albeit on first down.

Meanwhile, in the press box, Jon Wilner is recognized as the Football Writers Association of America beat writer of the year, and USC's longtime sports information (read: media relations) staffer Tim Tessalone is awarded for his longevity (18 years there).

MSU did burn their first timeout of the half, potentially crucial in a tie game, but got the outcome they wanted, as Shayne Skov finally got caught trying to time the snap. Offsides on third and one, and it's a fresh set of downs for MSU. Wayne Lyons drops what should have been Cook's third interception of the day (Anderson dropped a potential second), and then, the very next snap, Jordan Richards has a would-be fourth, but for a defensive holding called on Alex Carter. Carter definitely held with both hands on replay, but David Shaw is well onto the field protesting to the officials. MSU, finally, does stall, and on comes the punt team. Whitfield fair catches at the seven. The Stanford defense has done a nice job of giving Cook less time when he rolls to his right, and they nearly came down with multiple interceptions as a result. 8:28 left in the third quarter of a potential classic.

Would love to see Stanford reestablish the run here, if MSU's defense aligns accordingly. The Cardinal is averaging over seven yards a crack, though Gaffney's 47-yarder admittedly skews those stats. Gaffney fumbles, picks it up, and has no gain. He then loses a yard on second down, into the teeth of an MSU blitz.

Michigan State has been blitzing its corners very effectively and it's almost as if they know when Stanford is thinking run. But the Spartans have no answer on third and long as Hogan finds Cajuste on another perfect deep ball for 51 yards. Hogan's deep balls have dramatically improved as the season has gone on, and I like that the coaches are calling plays that take advantage of his strengths.

Kelsey Young gains 16 on an end-around out of the wildcat, so a holding call on Cam Fleming is a net loss of 26 yards. There has been no indefensible individual call, to my eyes at least, but in the aggregate, Stanford is not getting the favorable whistle today, man oh man.

On third and 17, Hogan fakes out a linebacker and scrambles for 14 yards to keep the drive alive (and keep David Shaw from bringing out the punt team). The Cardinal will take a timeout to talk over a fourth and three with 4:16 to go in the third. 17-all, ball at MSU's 36. Wish they had saved the timeout in case they later needed it.

I call a halfback toss pass to Gaffney. Gaffney does not have a great arm, admittedly, so pitch it to him and if the first down yardage is there, he can run for it, and if he's going to be short of the sticks, pull up and try to hit a tight end streaking deep. Sometimes the defense overplays on fourth down situations and you can break off an easy touchdown with such a call. Plus, whatever we have in the playbook, what are we saving it for? [Ed: This would have likely worked, given how hard Michigan State was selling out on the interior run]

Instead, it's a vanilla handoff to Tyler Gaffney up the middle, which is dead from the get-go when the defense is blitzing two linebackers up the middle. Gaffney loses three and MSU will again scrimmage with a chance to take the lead.

State is starting to have a little more luck running the ball, but I'll take that if Stanford continues remains stout against the pass. Langford has run four straight times for nine, seven, seven and 11 yards, and State is in field goal position with a fresh set of downs at the Cardinal 27. I thought this nickel would be a good idea, but with the Spartans now to the Cardinal 12 after a screen to Langford, it's not working.

The next snap, in a base defense, Shayne Skov causes a fumble and Josh Mauro recovers at the Stanford eight. Very timely there. [Ed: In retrospect, the last spectacular fifth year senior moment]

The television's on mute, but I can hear Brett Musberger in my mind waxing poetic about the sun starting to dip behind the San Gabriel Mountains. Cliché, perhaps, but true. Driving into Pasaenda this morning, I was blown away, as visitors are annually, by how beautiful this community is.

Stanford runs three times on the ensuing series, and loses a yard net. Cam Fleming beats the ground in frustration as he whiffed on a second-level block on third down, though Gaffney wasn't converting against this defense on third and 11.

The paid attendance of 95,173 is the most in the BCS era. They must have shrunk the stadium since, since Michigan and Washington State played before 100,000-plus in 1998 Rose Bowl, the last time more fans were on hand. (Washington State's starting quarterback that day? None other than Ryan Leaf. Tom Brady was, I believe, either a Michigan freshman or commit, who sat waiting in the wings behind Brian Griese, now with ESPN.)

Michigan State 17, Stanford 17, end of third quarter
