Card close out ASU, 76-70

Dwight Powell finished with 28 and Chasson Randle added 21 as the Cardinal downed ASU 76-70 at Maples Pavilion Saturday. Now 5-4 in the conference at the halfway mark, Stanford could find itself as high as a tie for third in the conference standings, pending results this weekend.

With a win here, Stanford could push as high as third in the conference with a 5-4 mark through the halfway mark. Undefeated Arizona and UCLA, 6-2 in the league, are clear, but if Cal (vs. Arizona) and Washington (at WSU) each lose today, they would be in a potential six-way tie in the conference standings with this game's two contestants, Colorado and Oregon State. Wow.

Nice start to the second half for the Card, as off another O board, this one Josh Huestis', Dwight Powell scores another two points, these ones on free throws. ASU then has two turnovers and three missed free throws on its next four possessions, and we're knotted at 34 apiece. Randle blew a layup, Brown and Huestis missed a three, and Powell airballed a jumper, but off yet another offensive rebound, Chasson Randle knocks down a three from just in front of the Stanford bench to break the tie.

Gage checks in for Nastic to try to wrench the lid just a little bit off the rim. It appears to work, as Randle finds Powell for a J the next time down the court and ASU needs a timeout, with their five-point deficit the biggest of the afternoon. Make that seven, as Dwight Powell hits the right-handed layup and draws the foul as we hit the TV timeout.

Stanford 39, ASU 34, under-16 timeout

ASU's offense is one of the worst in the league. Statistically, their only strengths are drawing fouls and hitting threes, but to their credit, they've done that to stay close thus far. Stanford, meanwhile, looked to have a huge edge on the defensive glass, where they're the best of the conference and ASU is the worst. Indeed, Stanford has cleaned up on the glass today, so credit to them as well.

Chasson Randle kisses in a wide-open three off the front rim, pushing the lead to eight, the biggest of the night. But he then bails out to find another defender as ASU drives right at him. John Gage has to help late, and it's two ASU free throws. Then, Randle drives into two Sun Devils, draws the foul, and hits a tough runner to boot, though it's waved off. A busy stretch for Chasson and a microcosm of Stanford's season there – lots of excitement, but too much inconsistency to make the leap from good to great.

Huestis has a dunk off an in-bounds play, Powell hits a layup, and Randle converts an and-one layup. Stanford is feasting with Bachynski, the nation's best shot blocker, on the bench, and they're up 52-39. Bachynski checks back in and Jahii Carson hits a three to pull within ten, but a minute later, Powell matches in kind with his second three of the day. The Cardinal now have 11 offensive rebounds, and they've suddenly warmed up, and are 6-of-11 deep. Arizona State's not going to be able to match that inside-out combo, and sure enough, Dwight Powell has 23 to lead all scorers, with his two threes complementing his inside game.

Stanford 55, Arizona State 42, under-12 timeout

25-11 Stanford through the first eight minutes of the second half, as ASU is now shooting just 20 percent from deep. Some of it is luck, as ASU has missed a couple of the open looks they hit in the first half, and some of it is Bachynski on the bench, to be fair. But Stanford is closing out much better this half, as it looks like the halftime adjustments are paying off nicely.

Speaking of the defense, Grant Verhooven draws foul No. 4 on Jahii Carson, a charge. Randle then has two layups on as many possessions to push the Card back up 12. The prettiest was the second, as he reversed off the high, high, high glass – I thought it hit the shot clock live -- to get around Bachynski after Powell found him on a nice pick and roll. Jaron Collins calls the shot Jordanesque as Randle has 21.

Stanford 61, Arizona State 51, under-eight timeout

Arizona State has halved what was a 13-point deficit, now trailing just 61-55 after four straight free throws. They have Stanford in the double bonus the rest of the way, as Stanford is struggling to defend without fouling, as Jaron Collins rightfully points out. Carson's on the court with four fouls, but Nastic pumps left and then spins to his right to fill it up. Dawkins works the officials to get two straight calls: Powell flopping on weak off-ball contact 20 feet from the hoop, and an out-of-bounds call that rightfully should have been reversed in Stanford's favor. Not sure if Stanford gets those calls on the road, or if Johnny Dawkins gets those whistles a few years ago.

Tough, tough game for Anthony Brown, who fails to draw rim on a long two. He's just 1-of-7 on the night, and also had a quiet day against Arizona. But Stefan Nastic rebounds Randle's miss, to drain another 30 seconds off the clock, and then catches a ball slapped away from Carson on the other end. Nastic then swishes an eight-footer on the right baseline, and it's looking good for the Cardinal as we're under four minutes. Jahii Carson does respond to drain a long three, so Stanford might not be out of the woods just yet.

Stanford 67, Arizona State 62, 2:45 remaining

After Powell drains two free throws, he and Randle have a combined 48, while no other Stanford player has more than five. Carson has 22 and Jermaine Marshall has 16 for the Devils.

Josh Huestis has a huge offensive rebound, tipping to himself off a Powell miss late in the shot clock. Down 69-62 with just over a minute left, ASU is in foul mode, and Nastic splits a pair with 1:18 to go.

Just got interesting. ASU layup, then Dwight Powell inbounds off Chasson Randle's leg, and then Marshall hits a contested three to pull within three, 70-67. Powell drives left and has his shot blocked by Bachynski, but gets the whistle on the body bump. He splits, 71-67. ASU then panics, with Carson putting up a 30-footer, even though they have plenty of time and just a four-point deficit. Huestis rebounds and hits both ensuing free throws, 73-67 with 36 seconds left.

ASU airballs a three, Anthony Brown splits his pair, and this one is over unless you had action on the 5.5-point line. ASU three, two Huestis free throws, 12.8 seconds left and Stanford by six. Josh Juestis blocks a last-second ASU layup to preserve the cover, and it's a 76-70 final.

Stanford will now have three straight on the road, at Cal and then at the Washingtons. Winning two would be a solid goal, as while Cal is obviously tough, the Washington schools, Wazzou especially, are eminently beatable. Stay tuned!
