Stanford Sweet 16: Final Look Back (Pt. 2)

Stanford's 82-72 loss to Dayton marked the end of the Cardinal's 2014 run to the Sweet 16. Here are Daniel Novinson's running thoughts from the second half of play.

Halftime thoughts: Stanford will have their work cut out for them in the second half. They have forced only two turnovers, so maybe a little more aggression on D would be a good place to start. They're also even in rebounds, and given the size advantage, that's inexcusable. Dwight Powell has three O boards and six total, and Huestis has three blocks, but all the other bigs need to play with more aggression. Making some shots also wouldn't hurt the cause. For all the kvetching, the Card have gotten open looks, and if they hit at their season average of around 45 percent instead of tonight's 33 percent (9 of 27) – and take away the resulting Dayton fast break chances – this game is probably tied. If I'm Stanford, I give Stefan Nastic takes until the Flyers take it away. He's 2-of-3 today and 22 of his last 24 entering tonight. He can also pass and draws fouls (in a game when they're being whistled aggressively) with the best of them. Maybe he can dump off to Powell to get some easy looks, and maybe he can pass out for threes, but even if not, I go down swinging with the guy who's shooting 89 percent on the tournament. We also need three or so hustle baskets this half. Only one steal tonight is not going to cut it. Looks like that Dayton run and gun has us tentative and on our heels. My prediction, if we're going to win this game, we need one of: Nastic getting 15 attempts, or us nearing in on 35 free throws, eight steals and +10 on the boards. (Currently, those figures are three, 15, seven, and even.) I'd start Nastic, keep him in if he gets his fourth foul, and go down swinging. And maybe switch to man, because this zone isn't working… Okay, no more finger nails left to bite. Here goes. Randle airballs a floater after trying but proving unable to feed the bigs. Dayton misses a three from the parking lot but has the rebound. Not a good start yet again. Derron Oliver hook for the Flyers on the second chance. Nastic layup, easy. Keep feeding him! 2-3 zone. Dayton offensive rebound yet again. The Flyers look to be slowing it down with the lead, which would be incredibly dumb if true, as it takes away their biggest strength for us. Flyers miss from inside, Huestis bank shot, Dayton open three again. Bad rotation, yeah (and switch to man, c'mon now) but do these guys ever miss? Flyers by 11, we take timeout, now minus-two in rebounds.

Powell bank shot. Yup, keep working it inside every time. Dayton finally misses a three, who knew that could happen. The Card do exactly what they need to do and work it to Nastic. Dayton nearly sags into a triple team and doesn't make it easy, but Nastic doesn't care – and-one. 47-41 after the free throw jiggles in. There's one of those steals we need, and who else but Nastic grabs the rebound, draws the foul, and is screaming with enthusiasm. Let's go! Nastic finally misses down low and we can't bang home a tip. Dayton misses yet another three, and so now we're moving in transition, and it's Powell rattling in a layup after a near-travel. We're within four. All right! Huestis dribbles into three men and turns it over, but we have a block at the other end. Dayton make, but Nastic then receives an entry pass after posting up nicely, and draws yet another foul. He'll be headed to the line on the other side of the break.

Dayton 49, Stanford 43, 14:56 remaining

Great halftime adjustments. Nastic up to six attempts and Powell's now 3 of 5. Let our frontcourt win or lose this one. Need to keep playing solid D, ideally in the man, hope Dayton keeps missing the looks it nailed in the first half, and be aggressive with loose balls. Two Nastic free throws and the lead's down to four, 49-45. Dayton responds with a nice bucket off nice movement.

We already have 10 points in the paint this half. Perfect. Down low to Nastic, off to Randle, corner three long, but Powell with the O board and draws a foul. Stanford puts up a stupid three, Anthony Brown I think, and so it's Dayton with an uncontested transition three to push the lead back to nine. But Nastic draws yet another foul after receiving an in-bounds, and so it's 5-0 Stanford fouls this half. Nastic is stripped, falls on his guy to try to retrieve it, and hits the bench with his fourth. Okay, let's work through Dwight Powell now. Dayton splits the pair, lead's back to ten, where we started the half, 55-45.

Fouls are still 5-2 Dayton this half, so let's keep at it. We cough it up again, Dayton ball on the arrow. Dawkins certainly getting his share of words in to the officials; hopefully it helps. Ugh, Flyers lay-up late in the shot clock. Powell responds over his right shoulder for an and-one, and Jalen Robinson for Dayton hits the bench with four fouls. 57-48, 12:15 left.

Dayton drives for yet another layup late in the clock – these guys are good, sheesh. Understand why we went zone, as we just can't stay in front of them. But Randle gets bumped near half court and we'll be in the bonus the remaining 11-plus minutes. Stay tuned…

Dayton 59, Stanford 48, 11:41 remaining

Card are 16 of 19 from the line tonight to Dayton's 7 of 12. That's a huge key in a game in which we're minus-24 points from the three-point line. 3 of 17 for Stanford's starting backcourt right now, ouch.

Randle splits the pair, lead is back to ten, but we knock a would-be rebound out of bounds on the other end. When do we bring back Nastic, especially now that we're in the one-and-one?

Powell draws the weakest of fouls as he was out of control and on his way to the hardwood anyway, but I'll take it. He misses the front end of the one-and-one, and after the Robbie Lemons rebound, is called for a charge. Okay, D needs to tighten.

Instead, we just can't stay in front of these guys. Randle taken late off the dribble, Dayton's money from inside three feet, and it's an and-one for the Flyers. That's one nail in the coffin, three to go. 13-point game, 10:15 left.

The officials are reviewing who knows what, but no call made.

Randle three, our first since five minutes in, I believe. Lead's down to nine. Dayton and-one – where was the foul though – off another O-board. Nastic in and draws another foul, and this is going to be a free throw shooting contest the rest of the way.

Nastic misses his pair, 64-52, 9:12 to go, and it's double-bonus the rest of the way for the Card. Randle draws contact on a fast break after Dayton misses a layup, and we're back to within ten. 64-54.

Hand to the face as Dayton stiff-arms Dwight Powell on the way to the hoop. On replay, make that an elbow, and let's call it a flagrant foul while we're at it too. Hopefully it's two shots and the ball here, let's see.

Powell splits two free throws to pull the deficit to nine, and it is Stanford ball off the flagrant-one foul. Right back to Powell, and one. We need to make these free throws, as our percentage has tailed off after an excellent first half. Powell is true and the lead's down to six.

We still can't stop penetration, so Dayton gets past the initial man, dumps it off, pump-fakes a triple team, and draws an and-one on a tough fade away. This team can play too, sheesh. Not sure what we're supposed to do defensively if we can't stay in front in a man, and get out-rotated time after time in a zone. Maybe stay in man, tell the guards to foul if they get beat and hope Dayton misses a few in the one-and-one. We'll need a little luck to complete the comeback here.

Dayton 66, Stanford 58, 7:54 remaining

Flyer free throw good, nine-point game. We have the starting five out, as it should be. Ball works inside-out nicely, but Randle leaves a three a little long. Dayton runner, 11-point game, seven to go. Nastic jumper inside. Stanford timeout, 69-60. Nastic is now 5-of-7, but Stanford has just two steals and is only plus-one on the boards, as we revisit our halftime keys. Timeout Dawkins, maybe we start going offense for defense here.

Instead, Dayton's running clock, which I think does help us, but not when we lose a guy and they get back to the rack for yet another and one. They do miss the free throw after Powell picks up his fourth. Corner three, Josh Huestis, huge! 71-63, under six left.

Dayton runs more clock, but they get an offensive rebound off a fadeaway corner three, so advantage Flyers. Then Nastic gets beat on a backdoor cut and fouls out with 5:04 left. He'll finish with 15. Oliver makes both, lead's back to 10. Chasson Randle and-one whistled off, as it's called offensive on Randle on a poor, poor call, I think. His defender was moving, but hard to complain in a game in which we're at 30 free throw attempts. At the end of the day, if you can't stay in front of a defender, it's your own fault.

The teams trade turnovers, then Gage misses an open three. Needed that. Four minutes left. Have to be perfect the rest of the way and get some luck, down 10. We get a turnover, and then nearly cough it back up, but instead Dayton steps out of bounds on an intercept.

Dayton 73, Stanford 63, under-four timeout
Only Oliver and Jordan Siebert are over 70 percent free throw shooters for the Flyers. As they are still short of the one and one, I hope we continue to play aggressive defense, and when we do need to foul, hack anyone else. Randle tries to split too many men and find Powell, turnover. He does well on the other end to slap it away from a Flyer cutter and out of bounds, but trading possessions isn't going to cut it at this point. Shooting foul, Robbie Lemons, Vee Sanford to the line for two. He hits both, 75-63 Flyers, 3:04 left. Another nail in the coffin…

Randle misses a parking lot three. Dayton transition layup. Huestis misses a three and it's all over folks. 14-point game, 2:20 to play. It's been a heck of a run and Dayton played magnificently, but this wasn't our best game tonight. Randle with his pair, 12-point game, and time for a lot of turnovers, missed Dayton free throws and Stanford threes… We do force a turnover off the in-bounds, but then miss about four looks from point-blank range before Dayton rebounds and travels.

Marcus Allen draws an off-ball foul and steps to the line for two. Dayton certainly gave us our chances late too. Allen misses both, but Powell rebound and layup. Oliver fouled on a would-be dunk and splits, 78-67. Need some threes and some missed freebies… Randle tries to hero ball it and the officials miss a double-dribble and offensive foul to rule it Cardinal ball. But Gage misses an open three, and then it's two more Dayton free throws. Randle desperation J, timeout, 11-point game with 48 seconds to play.

Hope y'all had the over, as we're going to play this one out… Sanford receives the in-bounds, steps to the line and makes a pair. Randle nails a three, we then force a turnover and miss a three, and that's going to be all she wrote as Dawkins calls off the dogs. Dayton 82, Stanford 72, Final

Another nail in the coffin… Randle misses a parking lot three. Dayton 82, Stanford 72, Final Tweet
