Stanford Offense: A New Flexibility?

With possibly the deepest wide receiver corps in history set to work an experienced quarterback in 2014, should Stanford fans expect some tweaks in offensive approach? David Shaw provided some hints.

David Shaw and a New Flexibility?
Our fingers never stop flying across the keyboard at The Bootleg, and so we have even more David Shaw from the Bay Area Media Day last Wednesday. He talks about the importance of offensive flexibility – which should be music to many Booties’ ears – but then talks about the need to stick to a core identity a moment after, so your guess is as good as mine.

On his curiosity about the summer practices: “Which guys got stronger and cut body fat? I’ll talk to the freshmen if they call and see how they’re feeling, but they’re a very mature group. I never like to ask too many questions because that all changes when we put pads on. I’ll know what I need in the next 10 days.”

On using the new running backs: “It starts up front, with a willingness to run the ball. We’re going [into camp] IDing what these guys do well and finding out here are the things they’re most comfortable that they can do, so how can we utilize Barry Sanders, Ricky Seale, Kelsey Young? It’s a combination of having a great scheme, a great OL run scheme, but also let’s not be so hardcore in we’re just going to do this, but have a flexibility for the comfort zone of our running backs…

I suppose the proof will or won’t come in the fourth quarter of Week 2’s USC game, but that promise of offensive flexibility has to sound like music to Booties’ ears. Stanford ran every single first down against Michigan State, to the tune of perhaps two yards per carry -- and an uphill battle for Kevin Hogan the rest of every series. The consensus view is that the program is run at an A-level – player development, recruiting, continuity, you name it, but a potential Achilles heel is the in-game playcalling, offensive inflexibility in particular.

”We’re not going to change our identity, but we might emphasize different things. Power downhill, then a toss play, a reverse, a wildcat. We’re always versatile, so we can always change and tweak what we do.” (Editor's note: The Pac-12 Championship demolition of Arizona State might be a good blueprint to follow)

I guess it’ll be more of the same on offense, and this explicitly gets to the crux of fans’ frustrations with the attack. Stanford will run inside the tackles. Then they'll run outside the tackles. Then the Cardinal will put in their designated speed back and run a reverse with him, and then they'll put in the designated wildcat guy and run that for three yards. The coaches call that versatile, the fans call it predictable, and maybe both are right. The formula has yielded four straight BCS bids and two straight Rose Bowls, but also left fans wondering what if, given a defense that has seemingly had the horses to go further yet.

Hey, look, throw in a few personal attacks and I’ve just summarized the last two years of posts on our site. Now now, let’s turn back to the adult in the room, David Shaw.

On the running back battle: “At the end of spring, we had some clues, but we don’t know who’s ready to get more than an even share, and might not know until we start playing games. That’s when we judge, when it’s live and we’re tackling, that’s who can have more than just one-third or one-fifth of the carries.”

On Ty Montgomery’s return: “I never follow the direction of players, I always follow the direction of the doctors. He’s ahead of schedule. He’s a phenomenal athlete and if he’s ready to go game one and the doctors say he’s a limited reinjury risk, then let him go play, I’m all for it. There’s no babying football players. If he’s ready to go, he’s returning kickoffs and he’s a receiver. The tight ends can take pressure off the receiving corps, as can the running game, so if we have to pull back a game or two, so be it, but when he’s ready, he’s full-go.”

On whether the injury was a carryover from last year: “It was there last year. It’s been a point of concern. We’re on our way back from it. He’s going to be 100 percent healthy at some point extremely early in September. It just depends how early.”

On Stanford in a playoff: “Five years ago, Oregon went undefeated in the conference. It hasn’t happened since. It’s way too hard to go through the conference unscathed. To think about a four-team playoff, I chuckle, because I’m looking at the schedule, from USC to Washington to UCLA to Notre Dame. All those things, it’s a tough road to traverse, so I can’t worry until in a discussion late in the year.”

On whether the Pac-12 should go to eight conference games given that other conferences haven’t bumped to nine: “We absolutely need to be all by same rules. The kicker is what happens with the committee and the fourth team to play. Who is the team left out? Is it a team with a really good record and a not so good strength of schedule, or is it a team that lost two but had a really, really tough strength of schedule? Whatever happens could determine whether conferences go to nine or move back from nine to eight.”

Shaw’s right in my opinion, but he’s also savvy. He is preemptively lobbying the committee and the media should a replay of last year come to fruition.

On the offensive line: “The biggest concern is not our talent on offensive line, but how well we play as unit. Our ability to run the ball all starts up there. We have a quarterback No. 2 in school history and we have to protect him. We have a phenomenal receiving corps and need time to throw them the ball. I don’t mind putting it on these guys. This is the most talented offensive line we’ve had in the eight years since we’ve been here. How fast will we gel? Will we gel week one? Week two? Week six? Week eight? How fast will we play as a good, effective, cohesive unit?”

On punt return: “Barry enters the season as the starter. We’re going to sprinkle in Ty and he would love to do it. Kodi started as a really good punt returner and there’s Christian McCaffery. In training camp, all those guys will get a chance.”

Wild prediction: Stanford has had its share of kickoff return touchdowns in recent years, with Chris Owusu and Ty Montgomery leading the charge. I can’t remember a punt return for a touchdown though, and my bet is that this is the year we do see one. (Editor's note: I remember Doug Baldwin housing a punt in 2008 and Richard Sherman doing the same in 2009)

”How soon in camp can he get cleared, to getting hit and tackled, to going to live drills? Our program to return is the best protocol I’ve seen. We’re on same page, the coaches, the strength coaches, the training staff, the doctors, and we have daily, sometimes twice daily conversations. Can he get jostled? Can he put on the yellow jersey? Can he get hit? Can he get tackled? How sore is he after he’s tackled? Do we have to hold him back? So by the time he’s [progressed through these increasingly physical requirements], everyone’s on the same page"

On the standard return timetable for Montgomery: “These are possibilities, but we’re also talking about a phenomenal athlete. I’ll tell you about this about Ty: Since he was a junior in high school, we recruited him really early and told him, ‘Okay, you’re close academically, but here’s what you need to come through on the academic side. [Pause.] Straight A’s. Once the challenge was laid. That’s a really good school at St. Mark’s. Straight A’s. That’s the mentality of what he needs to do, boom, give me direction, give me some help of what I need to do, and once I’m in front, get out of my way and the mentality of doing it. He’s been every bit as good at a younger age than Chris Owusu.”
