Stanford Week 1: Second Quarter Breakdown

Our thorough breakdown of Stanford's week one performance continues with Daniel Novinson's look at the second quarter.

Elsewhere, it’s Cal 17, Northwestern 7 after the Wildcats just got on the board. The Big Ten looks awful thus far – Penn State and, to a lesser extent, Ohio State and Illinois, needed Houdini acts to escape against overmatched opponents. Iowa State of the Big 12 did fall, as did Wazzu to Rutgers. And Texas A&M, relative SEC newcomer, nearly put up 50 in South Carolina, presumably moving your Cardinal back into the Top 10, and definitively moving your Cardinal into the No. 1 slot for active home winning streak. That mark now stretches 16.25 games long, dating back to a 2011 home loss to Oregon. With USC in crisis prevention mode and the rest of the home schedule a decided step down, I’d peg the odds of extending that mark another season as more likely than not.

Total yards are 77 to 24 through one quarter, with each team running 12 plays from scrimmage. Stanford has five runs for 30 yards, 21 of them from Kelsey Young on his four carries.

Then, to start the second quarter, what the turnover lord giveth, he taketh away. Francis Owusu shows his age, as I think a more veteran receiver would fight back toward an underthrown Kevin Hogan ball. Instead, C.J. Spencer has an interception and a 20-yard return to boot. The next snap, though, Wayne Lyons again jams his man and gets his paw on the ball. His first deflection got the D off the field on a first-quarter third and five. This deflection lands in the hands of Peter Kalambayi for his first career interception.

Hogan then takes a coverage sack with only three UC Davis defenders back deep against three Stanford receivers. I think one of those receivers needs to cut off their fly route short of 30 yards, as there were no linebackers in the same area code. [Ed: We'd see the desired intermediate passing game show up as the game progressed. ]Then, Josh Garnett hears his name over the PA system twice, and that’s not usually good news for an offensive lineman. First, it’s a false start, and then it’s a clip on a Kelsey Young screen that is declined to force the Card into third and 17. Hogan scrambles for five on third, and so Ben Rhyne will be punting from plus-territory. His punt does the trick, travelling from the Aggie 47 to fly out of bounds at their 10. Plus, personal foul on the non-return will back the Aggies up to their five.

We see Stanford scoring on USC throughout the decades, as the video boards promote next week’s rivalry and, of course, the montage ends with Pritchard to Bradford in the back left corner of the Coliseum. Hard to read too much into 15 minutes, but gotta figure Stanford can at least keep the starters somewhat fresh with a double-digit lead here early, whereas USC might have more of a fight on its hands with Fresno State later on. Plus, of course, there’s the whole issue of an absent Josh Shaw, the distraction that caused, and then backup running back Anthony Brown quitting the squad and alleging that new coach Sark was a racist. Umm, Anthony, I’m pretty sure it’s not Toby Gerhart who’s ahead of you on the depth chart, if you catch my drift.

The offense has run in stops and starts, but it is defense than wins championships, and the D has been boringly dominant, just like you’d like it.

Stanford 14, UC Davis 0, 10 minutes remaining, first half.
Hogan play-action deep, and I was saying “boom” up here in the press box from the moment Davis bit hard on the play action. Whether it’s Kevin Hogan, or the defense’s response (the logical guess), or my faulty memory or plain luck, sure seems like our passing game works best off play-action…

…We all know Michael Rector can run. Turns out he can catch too. It’s a 40-yard strike off the play-action post into the north end zone (left, from the press box side), and the Cardinal are sitting pretty.

Stanford 21, UC Davis 0, nine minutes remaining, first half
Alabama and West Virginia are knotted at 17, Notre Dame leads Rice 21-10, and Cal leads Northwestern 24-7. All those games are at or nearing halftime. We don’t have a crystal ball, so don’t know for sure if Stanford will be in the playoff discussion, and if so, what other teams will be in consideration, but you can sure root for some top-10 teams to get stuck with early losses, and for the Pac-12 to shine. Wazzu probably should have won against Rutgers, so a Cal upset of Northwestern would even the score – all good by me. Meanwhile, the defense looks positively, dare I say it, Skovian, as David Parry comes up with a second and long sack (and near-safety) that soon forces the Aggies into yet another punt. Stanford will have 54 yards to go, 6:46 in the half left to burn, and then the second-half kickoff ahead. (One reason I love deferring – tire out that opposing defense!) Time to grind some meat.

Stanford 21, UC Davis 0, 6:46 remaining, first half
Early overall impressions: Both lines look the part. Defensively, Davis is averaging 1.5 yards per play, and the dropoff from last year’s front is non-existent, at least against this level of competition. Offensively, it’s not like the line is opening up Chip Kelly Oregon-esque holes five yards wide, but we’re at 33 yards rushing on 10 carries. Not great, but a Hogan sack is distorting that number, you expect the D to wear down in the second half, and good enough for week one. And then Christian McCaffrey, playing in the Kelsey Young-slot role, takes his first career reception for a 52-yard touchdown off a quick slant. As David Lombardi, my figurative right-hand man, and for today at least, literal left-hand man, points out, it looks like Kevin Hogan recognized a blitz was coming and audibled into the absolutely perfect call. Andrew Luck was known for just that around these parts, of course.

Jordan Williamson’s extra point then makes him the leading scorer in Stanford history. Credit to Williamson, and all credit to the players and coaches on both sides of the ball who put Williamson in a position to knock through so many kicks.

Stanford 28, UC Davis 0, 5:53 remaining, first half
David Parry splits a double team and summersaults a running back on first down. That’s ungodly. I know every player on the two deep has been “phenomenal”, per David Shaw, and I know every team should go 12-0 judging solely from the preseason hype, but you gotta admit that Parry has absolutely lived up to the offseason hype so far. A near-safety, and then splitting a double team and causing a running back to go head over heels. To riff off the Hulk (the cartoon character, not the poster), you won’t like him when he’s fully healthy.

I am not usually a huge fan of pumped-in music, but I do like the “Hells Bells” hook that’s pumped in to get the crown loud for third and longs.

Apparently the music does its voodoo hex, as Davis’ Chris Martin lays out for a 15-yard out on third and eight, but can’t hang on. Stanford gets the ball back, and it’s seven plays in 77 yards. The touchdowns are coming so quick I can’t keep up. Barry Sanders had three runs for 20 yards and Hogan hit Rector once short, but mostly it was a quick hitter to Ty Montgomery. He took the extended handoff from Hogan near the line of scrimmage at the Davis 44 in the right flat, cut inside and rode a receiver’s downfield block to paydirt.

Stanford 35, UC Davis 0, 1:19 remaining, first half
This first half has been like playing Madden on Rookie Mode, with you the human player in control of Ty Montgomery. Whatever you want Montgomery’s stat line to be, you name it, because he’s 10 percent faster than anyone else out there. Whatever the final score to be, you name it, because the AI hasn’t been updated since the Atari version, and besides, it’s hard to screw up even if you wanted you when you’re in the backfield with one push of a button every single snap. This is what a national championship contender is supposed to look like against an overmatched opponent.

Rumors of a Stanford demise have been greatly exaggerated, and with a biggie on deck next week, the opportunity to buy low may be quickly evaporating.

While I wax poetic, Barry Sanders makes me laugh aloud and audibly “ooo” with an ankle breaker to get down to the 15 with three seconds left. On comes Jordan Williamson, perhaps the most underrated player on the roster, and his 32-yard attempt is good.
