Opposing Views: USC

Did the NCAA go out of its way to punish USC? What impact players on the Trojan side of the ball will decide Saturday’s game? Does Palo Alto make a better road trip than Berkeley? We caught up with Dan Weber of Scout’s USCFootball.com and Evan Budrovich from the Conquest Chronicles blog to get these and other important questions answered in anticipation of Saturday’s clash.

On a scale of 1-10, how surprising was the 700-yard performance against Fresno State? Sure, the Bulldogs gave up around that many to San Jose State a year ago, while the Las Vegas Bowl wasn't much of a fight, but still, how did that happen?
Evan Budrovich: To be quite honest, I was sitting around a three in terms of a surprise level. The Trojans had been harping all offseason about how the up-tempo attack would directly change the overall output on offense. USC knew they were going to have a lot of chances to move the football. In a strange way, Fresno State actually played better in this past game, as opposed to the Vegas Bowl. Those improvements showed. USC was actually forced to convert on third downs and the Bulldogs’ two-quarterback system was able to compile long touchdown drives.
Dan Weber: It wasn't so much the Fresno State defense that factored in here, but the fact that the Bulldogs were also going to go no-huddle and come at USC instead of trying to slow things up. Sure, some people were surprised. We weren't so much, after watching USC throughout fall camp. They have a lot of offensive weapons. The new offense really matches the talents of this team, and they've incorporated the freshmen better than anyone could have hoped. The 105 plays were a shock since it didn't look like they were going that fast. The 701 yards, considering FSU would go fast and give them a chance, not so much.

The Bootleg: Are there still lingering effects of the NCAA sanctions? On the surface, it seems Sark doesn't have the depth he would prefer, but I could be wrong.
EB: They are more than lingering. It’s a 24-7 conversation. USC enters this week with only 62 scholarship players, and I can easily count about 10 of those who will not either be fully healthy nor effective enough to play against Stanford. What Sark has done to account for these issues is give as many players experience as possible. By increasing the workload in fall camp practices, a full two-deep rotation of players (walk-ons especially) have gotten their feet wet running this system. Sure, USC can't afford any major losses over the course of the season, but this roster is much more prepared to embrace said losses in a variety of different positions.
DW: Lots of them. USC went into the Fresno State game with 57 originally recruited scholarship players available. But that was an improvement over last year when USC went into the Las Vegas Bowl game with just 44 originally recruited scholarship players. And Stanford will recall how USC played just 13 players on defense – one guy for just one play – against the Cardinal last season (which of course was the point of the NCAA's limit of 15 new scholarships a year).
They wanted to destroy USC's program, but it didn't exactly work that way with two 10-win seasons in the last three. But it won't be until next year after being able to sign 25 again this year and maybe not until the year after that when USC gets back to 85 scholarship guys. But there is more depth and a legitimate two-deep here this year and three-deep at the three wide receiver positions.

So you’re saying the NCAA had it out for USC?
DW: Absolutely. The NCAA took USC down to appease its insiders from the likes of Miami and Notre Dame and the SEC. They changed the rules to do so. They didn't like USC's dominance and arrogance and all the fun and glamour and glitz of Hollywood around the program.
The disparate treatment for USC from a number of other programs that followed with much greater crimes and much lesser penalties makes that clear. For one ineligible player playing, the normal penalty is the loss of two scholarships. USC lost 30. And the limit of 15 a year was done to get USC far below the stated limit of 75 as it has done, down to 57 originally recruited scholarship players available for the Fresno State game.
The release of the NCAA's internal emails in the Todd McNair lawsuit make it clear the NCAA and its employees violated all their own rules in the desire to take USC down and make an example of it. Clearly it was fueled by an SEC fear (not to mention Oklahoma, Texas, and most of the Pac-12) to end Pete Carroll's run.

For Stanford fans younger than 60, it’s incredible to even call this (one-sided) series a rivalry. A game becomes a rivalry when one side takes something from the other. Has Stanford "taken" anything from 'SC since this series became competitive again? Is there any feeling among your fellow fans that Stanford wouldn't reach the heights it has under Harbaugh/Shaw without the Trojans going on probation? What kind of Bizarro World sees USC beat Stanford…and USC fans rush the field?
EB: While UCLA and Notre Dame are more traditional rivals for the Trojans, the thorn in USC's side recently has been the Stanford Cardinal. Going back to the "What's Your Deal Game" in 2009 where Toby Gerhart pounded away at USC's soul, the Cardinal have grown as a true bully to USC's dominance. The 2007 upset at the Coliseum was a big win as well, but the 2009 game was a statement in the fact that Stanford would not back down from USC because they have the firepower to match punch for punch in the trenches, an area the Trojans have customarily dominated over the years. The scholarship situation has certainly helped level the playing field to a degree, but it would not be right to discredit Stanford's recent rise based on USC's limitations. Even as USC begins to regain the full 25 scholarships, these two schools will be near the top of the Pac-12 for years to come.
DW: The thing you have to credit Stanford with was the way Harbaugh targeted Pete Carroll as he was exiting stage left from college football. Then the NCAA sanctions came along and the Pac-12 pretty much abandoned a USC team that couldn't help the league in the postseason or the national title chase. Good for Stanford that they were ready to step up. But for a program so battered with the NCAA sanctions and its own Lane Kiffin missteps, to step back into the national limelight with the win over Stanford after firing the head coach and playing with so few players to react the way it did in rushing the field (in what many think might have been the best field rush ever) was no surprise. It didn't matter that it was Stanford. Any nationally ranked team would have worked for USC fans that night, But Stanford worked fine. That wasn't about beating Stanford. It was about USC being back.

Leonard Williams is obviously a presence, but how else will the Trojan front seven look to take command against an inexperienced Stanford offensive line? Who are the other impact players on defense? And is there any relevant news to report on Josh Shaw?
EB: With Leonard Williams out on defense, the interior combination of Antwaun Woods and Claude Pelon will be crucial for USC's defense. Depth is an issue on the DL and at CB, so USC will rely heavily on Su'a Cravens to crowd the line of scrimmage in his new "dollar" role. That means the OLBs J.R. Tavai and Scott Felix will have to set the edge and be strong forces in the run stuffing game. Cornerback Kevon Seymour will most likely be tasked the duties of guarding Ty Montgomery in coverage, and USC does have the linebackers to cover Stanford's pass-catching tight ends in coverage. Sadly not much on the Josh Shaw front.
DW: No real news about Shaw, but then again, what we thought we knew last week wasn't exactly news either. Not sure now that he's lawyered up what that does for his possible return. As to the USC defense, probably don't look to last week's Fresno State game as a clue. USC pretty much stood in base and reacted. They won't do that this week. They will do things to free Leonard Williams from the double teams he often draws. And do things to allow hybrid defender Su’a Cravens, a 225-pound athletic safety, to make plays on the football. And with veteran Hayes Pullard leading the way at MLB, look for the other ILB Anthony Sarao to use his speed to bring pressure. One would think they'll really try to get pressure on Hogan as they did at the end last year.

The Weekender: Where do most SC fans stay/congregate for a trip to Palo Alto? If you polled USC fans, would they prefer a trip to Palo Alto or Berkeley?
EB: Interestingly enough, this is my first trip up to Palo Alto. What I will say is that thousands of USC fans will be coming, and many will eventually travel down from "The City" to watch the game. I’m definitely looking forward to eating at Pizza My Heart and checking out the expansive forestry worth exploring. It all makes for a nice Weekender trip, especially after the 12:30 start time, as fans want to hang out and watch Oregon vs. MSU later that night.
DW: They'd prefer Palo Alto for the game on Saturday, from the campus to the opponent, but San Francisco and the Cal part of the trip for Friday night. How's that for a political answer? It's really where USC fans come down.
