Opposing Views: Army

Any discussion of college football history is incomplete without mentioning Army. But after nearly two decades of struggles at West Point, new coach Jeff Monken may be the guy to turn things around. The Bootleg discussed this and other matters with two Black Knights experts, Sal Interdonato of the (Middletown, N.Y.) Times Herald-Record and Donald Yates of ArmySports.com.

The Bootleg: Last year's game featured a really impressive output from Larry Dixon and friends [284 yards rushing in a game in which Stanford struggled]. This year, who do you envision being the major contributors?

Donald Yates: A lot of the same guys will be playing this season. Dixon ran for 174 yards in the [47-39] win over Buffalo on Saturday. Terry Baggett and Tony Giovannelli should also get many carries. Look for Angel Santiago, who played against Stanford last year, to be the starter at quarterback. He completed 6 of 6 passes for 96 yards in the opener. Hard-hitting safety Geoffery Bacon is the leader on defense. Cornerback Josh Jenkins is probably the best coverage man. Army will be a little bigger on the lines, one of the things Monken has really worked hard to change.

Sal Interdonato: Dixon opened the season with a 174-yard, two-touchdown game against Buffalo last week. Dixon was limited to six carries against Stanford. He'll be more of a factor in the game. Dixon doesn't just run between the tackles. He has the speed to turn an outside pitch into a big play. A 1,000-yard rusher last season, Baggett is electric in the open field. He had a 41-yard touchdown run last week. Raymond Maples, a rare fifth-year senior at West Point, was injured in last year's Army-Stanford game and missed the rest of the season. A 1,000-yard rusher in 2011 and 2012, Maples was Army's leading receiver last week.

TB: For those who aren't familiar, talk about Army's contributions to big-time college football and the Cadets' legendary names of years past: What did coach Earl "Red" Blaik, Glenn Davis, Doc Blanchard, etc. accomplish that make them live on to this day?

Donald Yates: I believe Army was one of the first of the [current FBS programs] to surpass the Ivy League programs and others who were the original powers of the college football world. Earl “Red” Blaik was Army's head football coach from 1943 to 1958 and compiled a 121-33-10 record winning national titles in 1944, 1945, and 1946. Blaik was an innovative coach and one of the first to use the two-platoon system. He also was one of the first to carefully study film of his upcoming opponents. Glenn Davis and Doc Blanchard both were players of Blaik's who won Heisman Trophies. They both played for Army at the same time with Blanchard being known at “Mr. Inside” and Davis as “Mr. Outside.” Pete Dawkins was another player who won the Heisman at Army.

Sal Interdonato: Just outside Army's football office are the Heisman Trophies won by Blanchard (1945), Davis (1946) and Dawkins (1958). Blaik led Army to undefeated seasons and national champions in 1944, 1945 and 1946.

TB: Fast-forward to this era. Up until the ’90s, Army had a respectable program. It dominated Navy. The same Auburn team that almost won the SEC a year later nearly lost to Army in the 1996 Independence Bowl. Suddenly, things were never the same again. What the heck happened? Why have Air Force and Navy accomplished so much more recently? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to West Point compared to the other academies?

Donald Yates: It was a combination of two factors. One was a disastrous shift from the option game. Army had a couple of lean seasons in the late ’90s and decided to go to a pro-type passing offense. They hired Todd Berry in 2000 and by 2003 Army had a 0-13 season. [Ed: To date, the only such record in major college football history.]

I think the war in Iraq was the second factor. By far the service to incur the most casualties during that war was the Army. Most parents of high school players are leery of having their sons enter an occupation where they can be blown up, shot or even beheaded. The Air Force and Navy also deal with this but I think there is more of a stigma on the Army that has hung around since the Vietnam War. People believe that you join the Navy and Air Force, you fly jets or run nuclear reactors. You join the Army and you'll be peeling potatoes or digging foxholes on the front lines. It’s really unfair because there are plenty of great opportunities in the Army just as there are in the other services and not everyone marches off to war.

I don't know if Army has any advantages over the other two service academies. I do think West Point is the most prestigious of the three. You go to West Point and you are walking on hallowed ground where Lee, Grant, Patton and Pershing once studied and trained. West Point will likely be more of a physical and mental challenge than the other two service academies. With the Hudson River, it's one of the scenic campuses in America. Michie Stadium is considered one of the top venues in the nation to see a football game. The leadership training alone at West Point is second to none.

Sal Interdonato: Some Army fans will say the program's decline started when Berry was hired as head coach and 2000 and went away from the triple-option offense. Army won just five games in his three-plus season as a member of Conference USA. The academy would return to independent status in 2005.

Army last won the Commander in Chief's trophy in 1996 when it went 10-2 and earned a berth in the Independence Bowl. The Black Knights have enjoyed just one winning season since: Rich Ellerson led Army to win at the 2010 Armed Forces Bowl.

Army has closed the gap between the advantages that Air Force and Navy. This summer, players were able to complete their military training earlier, allowing the team to return to West Point for seven weeks of strength and conditioning before preseason camp opened.

TB: You have a new coach [Jeff Monken, formerly of Georgia Southern], who served as an assistant at Navy and experienced success at the FCS level. What are your early impressions of him? What makes Army fans think he'll get the program to turn the corner?

Donald Yates: I think he's brought more discipline and toughness to the program and he's also been more effective at motivating players during games. He has extensive knowledge of the option game and has recruiting contacts in fertile recruiting grounds in the Southeast. He's a coach that the players will respect, or they'll be sorry. He's had experience coaching at a service academy, which is a big plus. He's also worked to adjust some of summer military training regimen so that players have more time to prepare and train for the upcoming season.

Sal Interdonato: Monken has won everywhere he's coached as an assistant and a head coach at Georgia Southern the past four seasons. He knows every detail on the football field from offense, defense to special teams. He's brought a lot of energy to the program and he demands his players give their very best effort on every play. He and his staff grade every play and the players do up-downs for every assignment missed.

TB: Have you seen much of Stanford in the last several years? From your standpoint, what impresses you about the Cardinal?

Donald Yates: I have a lot of respect for a great university like Stanford. I've been on the campus a couple times and even went to football game or two when stationed at Fort Ord in the Monterey area in the ’80s. I did watch that Stanford-Oregon matchup last year and the year before. What impresses me most about the Stanford football team is that defense, and the way it shut down the high-powered Duck offense. Stanford also amazes me with their high standards of admission. I understand there is little leeway given to athletes. They must meet the same requirements as the regular students do. Jim Harbaugh had them scary good a few years ago and the current squad can beat anyone on a given day. [Ed: Ouch. Read between the lines there. Guess, at least in the eyes of one disinterested observer, we have fallen off already.] Army will have a tough task on their hands on Saturday at Stanford Stadium, but don't overlook the Black Knights.

Sal Interdonato: I'm impressed by how hard and physical Stanford plays. Last year, Army kept the game close [within a touchdown] for nearly three quarters. But, Stanford wore down the Black Knights late in the third quarter and early in the fourth quarter to pull away. Stanford's defense is one of the best I've seen. The Cardinal play their assignments well, and that's what teams need to do against Army's triple option.
