Front seven finishes off UW, 20-13 (F)

Here is a look at the fourth quarter of Stanford's 20-13 win at Washington as it happened live. The live blog was posted in the forums during the game.

Stanford 13, Washington 13, Start of Fourth

Stanford’s longest play of the game was that 28 yarder to Cotton, and UW has certainly been susceptible deep – just ask Georgia Southern. For whatever reason, we aren’t taking the downfield shots we have in years past, and maybe that’s costing us too.

Montomgery with another sweep, this time with Graham Shuler pulling out to hit the key block, and so Stanford’s into the red zone. Now it’s third and 11 though, after a run up the middle for minimal yardage, and then the screen to Montgomery is blown up for a loss.

Designed draw for Hogan, and if he’d pick the right hole, he might have the first. Instead, as our FOX team points out, he cuts back into the “briar patch”, and Shaq Thompson forces the fumble. No sense in mincing words: Hogan has regressed this season. UW will go from its 10.

Haha, UW has a “wildcat” package too. Here comes Jeff Lindquist at quarterback. You’d have to think we’ve seen this once or twice in practice though. And yup, it goes for one, about as well as expected.

Gus Johnson: “What’s the purpose of bringing [Lindquist] in at this point in the game?”

Charles Davis: “It’s one I really struggle with. I think we overthink this game sometimes.” He then points out that the packages can interrupt flow. Hey, we report, you decide here at The Bootleg.

Ooh, speaking of, looks like our report on Lance Anderson simplifying the defense made its way to a FOX producer, and now into Charles’ Davis talking points, as he talks about how there are fewer checks this year and it’s made the defense quicker. Thank heavens, as the defense is the sole reason Stanford is in this with a minus-three turnover margin.

James Vaughters tried to pull off, but it’s a late hit instead of fourth down. Another Kalambayi sack on third down, his third of the day, but will it stand up as the officials huddle? Doesn’t look it, and David Shaw is not happy after “number 13” (maybe A.J. Tarpley, No. 17?) is called for hands on the face.

Time to get off the field for the third time today. First down thrown away, and second down is nearly a pick. Third down and 10 at the UW 47, and my kingdom for a turnover. We’ll get five yards on a delay instead, good enough for me.

UW fakes the fourth down punt, and Shaq Thompson goes nowhere. Stanford will have the ball after stopping UW four different times that drive (Vaughters’ and Tarpley’s penalties, and then the final third and fourth downs).

Yards are 328 to 151. The advanced ratings are going to have us as one of the best teams in the country after this one and beating USC by 150 yards too. We’re averaging 5.9 yards per play to Washington’s 2.8.

Hogan keeps for three. Can we make this four-down territory? Seven minutes and counting. Maybe the grind-it-out, seven-minute drive will do the trick here. Hogan scrambles for 11, both hands on the ball this time. He’s within 10 yards of being our leading ballcarrier after he scrambles for yet another two. If our wide receiver corps is the best of all-time, you’d think something would be open at some point…

Instead, it’s a heavy-set run up the middle, but Stanford is going to get a huge break. Break of the game, honestly. Instead of Stanford facing third and a million in no-man’s land and a 20-yard punt a mere snap away, it’s a new set of downs at the UW 17 after a 15-yard facemask Kelsey Young draws on Danny Shelton.

Kelsey Young for 12. First and goal at the five. Just run it up the darn middle four times. The D will get the safety if the offense can’t convert.

Okay, better yet, it’s again that Kevin Hogan run/pass option. The right call, especially in these goal-line situations. The defense is jammed inside against the Stanford heavy set, and so Hogan can beat two guys to the pylon. We didn’t put the ball in the air once that drive, but the short field finally paid off, and Shelton’s penalty was just the break we needed.

Stanford 20, Washington 13, 4:29 remaining

Twenty-two is the magic number: Stanford has won every game in the David Shaw era in which it hit that mark. They’re not quite there yet, but, hey, there’s always overtime?

No, the pessimist in me jokes, and Jordan Williamson pulls the kick out of bounds so UW will decline the offsides penalty on Stanford’s kickoff team and go from its 35. As Charles Davis says, not a banner day for the Stanford kicker. I think it does make sense to recruit and give scholarships to kickers given how much they can swing games, and I know Stanford has such a guy waiting in the wings after Williamson graduates this season.

Maybe this is the drive in which we get that turnover, as UW is going to have to open it up a little bit. Arkansas and Texas A&M are going to overtime tied 28-all. FSU is now up 49-41 over NC State with six minutes to go. Army blows a lead to lose in overtime to Yale, 49-43. Thanks for the strength of schedule help, guys.

Chris Petersen is on tilt. UW would have had it at the 35, no questions asked. Instead, they decline the penalty, choose the rekick, and lose 19 yards to go from their 15. Aziz Shittu is out of control but the play isn’t called – instead it’s a one-yard gain after a 14-yard out route and UW has a new set of downs. They’re still inside the 30, when they should be approaching midfield. We’ll take it.

Counting down three minutes as we snap third and nine, and Miles is taking his sweet time with the audibles. Kevin Anderson latched on and simply would not let go.

This game is simply defensive domination. To say UW managed 158 yards and counting is selling the Stanford D short, because Stanford’s offense hasn’t had exceptionally long possessions. Instead, UW has had 11 drives. They have one touchdown, eight punts, and two turnovers on downs.

Almost makes the running up the middle three straight plays make sense. UW will get it back with just under two minutes to go, assuming Stanford doesn’t pull the rabbit out on this third and nine, and no timeouts, so it’ll be touchdown or bust time for the Huskies. I’d run a waggle on this third and nine, but instead it’s again a carry up the middle for five. Okay, time to see if the D can stand up one final drive.

Of Washington’s 11 drives, just one went over seven plays. Five were three-and-outs. Only two gained more than 22 yards. Only four went over 10 yards.

Time for the decisive drive No. 12. First down, Zach Hoffpauir jumps the route and breaks up an out. UW wants a pass interference, but looked clean to me, and would have been only a few yards anyway. 42-42 Colorado and Cal now, by the way. Second down, Alex Carter with good defense and Miles can only sail one out of bounds.

Third down, the ball looks to slip out of Miles’ grasp and it’s time for one final snap. It’s just enough as UW has 10.5 yards for the first down. They’ll review, but it should hold up. 1:36 remaining and UW will go from the Stanford 41. This might be the deepest they’ve had the ball all day.

Miles scrambles for 13, 1:06 and counting, but UW is using a lot of time between snaps. They snap at 56 seconds here, and it’s down to 50 after Miles can’t hit the running back after being flushed. Ball at Stanford’s 28, definitely deepest penetration of the day. Intentional grounding brings up third down as Miles runs himself into trouble as the pocket held up. The clock will drain all the way to 32 seconds after the 10-second runoff.

Fourth and 18, and the UW boos run down after the defensive front again rushes and drops Cyler Miles. Hogan kneels it out, and Stanford’s defense is indisputably the best in the country. They needed – and got – this one today.

See you next week as the Card visit Notre Dame, seeking revenge for the last visit to South Bend.
