Clardy’s Corner: Infamous Jameis

Jameis Winston is causing headaches for Florida State. Could their headaches have been Stanford’s?

Stanford running back Barry Sanders was late to his media availability session on Tuesday. His reason? Class.

Since the media tends to be a cynical, snarky bunch, a few people snickered. A football player still goes to class? In this day and age? You think this happens at other schools?

Sanders was part of Stanford’s banner 2012 recruiting class. Jameis Winston could have been. Stanford admitted the quarterback from Hueytown, Alabama, but he signed with Florida State instead. We know the rest of the story, both for the Seminoles and for Winston.

But what if the story hadn’t ended differently? If he had gone to Palo Alto, would he be embroiled in so much turmoil?

I spent about ten minutes with Winston last year. It was after his very first start, a 41-13 pasting of the Pitt Panthers at Heinz Field on Labor Day night. That game ended up serving as the Seminoles’ onramp to a national championship, and Winston’s coming-out party. It was one of the best quarterbacking exhibitions I have ever seen in person.

Winston happily deflected all the praise towards his teammates. He talked about how his family back home couldn’t wait to watch him play. He talked about wanting to be a pediatrician. He came across as a fresh-faced kid who felt at ease in the spotlight, yet humble, accessible, likeable. The anti-Manziel, if you will.

Maybe it was all a façade. Maybe I got duped. Maybe he’s still all those things, just with horrible judgment. Regardless, we all know the Winston headlines since then. Crab legs. Pellet guns. Vulgar phrases in public places. And, of course, sexual assault.

The latest headlines? Winston may have signed autographs for money. ESPN found one company had authenticated over 900 items signed by Winston. The same company also had scores of items signed by Georgia tailback Todd Gurley. The Bulldogs responded by handing Gurley an indefinite suspension. This wasn’t insignificant; Gurley was Georgia’s best player and the presumed Heisman frontrunner.

Signing autographs for money is, of course, an NCAA no-no. And if there is one surefire way to get the NCAA hound dogs sicced upon you, it’s to place your amateur status in jeopardy. After all, the only thing the NCAA fights to protect more than the “amateur” status of its student-athletes is the money in its own coffers.

To this point, Winston’s eligibility has survived sexual assault allegations. But it may not survive the least harmful of his alleged transgressions. College football is a strange business, no?

Outside of those ten minutes in Pittsburgh, I don’t know Jameis Winston. I don’t know if being Famous Jameis at Florida State changed him. Would it surprise you to learn that Winston’s time in Tallahassee is spent with more handlers and enablers and fewer professors and tutors?

I wouldn’t be shocked in the least. And I can’t help but wonder whether things for Winston may have been different on The Farm.

It’s impossible to know for sure. But, as we all know, the culture at Stanford is tremendously different than it is at the football factories like Florida State. Stanford center Graham Shuler did one of the best jobs of explaining this during last week’s press conference.

“I wanted to go to Georgia or Auburn,” Shuler admitted. “I wanted to have that experience. For four years, you are a demigod, walking around campus and doing all that. It was what I grew up in, the culture I understood.”

“There’s so much more to life than football. But good football can be played here. My freshman dorm, there was a kid down the hall who’d just published some physics paper and made $200,000. I’d so much rather be around people like that than going to an SEC school where I’m the big deal. Why should I be the big deal when there are people changing the world like that?”

Shuler grew up in Tennessee. His father played football for Auburn, his mother ran track for Mississippi State. He knows what that culture is all about. Football players can live like kings on an SEC campus. Class? Please. Who can be bothered with class when there are football games to be won?

(By the way, I don’t know Shuler behind closed doors, either. At his media sessions this year, he has proven to be a wildly fascinating and thoughtful young man. Then again, I thought the same things about Winston, too. Maybe this is why so many media folks are so cynical. Back to the Corner…)

Look, I don’t want this to become another one of those self-righteous Stanford-is-holier-than-thou pieces that most people roll their eyes at. And I’m not naïve enough to think that every single Stanford player is playing by all the rules 100% of the time. Trust me, I’d like to think otherwise, but I can’t. Not in this day and age. Cynicism strikes again.

And there’s also the very real possibility that Jameis Winston would have been as big a headache for the Card as he has become for the Seminoles. Granted, I’d like to think that Stanford by its very nature has more safeguards to prevent that from happening. But who knows?

Seems like things have worked out for the best. The Seminoles have a national title. Winston won a Heisman Trophy. Stanford went to two Rose Bowls. From a football standpoint, all’s well that ends well.

And through it all, Stanford has held true to its culture, which I’m sure Barry Sanders appreciates. On The Farm, he blends in. Many of his classmates may know who his father is, but many more may not. In many cases, they probably don’t care. It’s Stanford. More than a few students have pretty high-profile parents.

But if Sanders had stayed home and gone to Oklahoma State (or Florida State, which was also high on his list), everyone would have known who his father is. Stillwater would have been a completely different college experience for Sanders, for better and for worse. More enablers, more attention, more scrutiny, less homework.

Based on his tardiness to his media session on Tuesday afternoon, it sounds like Sanders has bought in to Stanford’s culture the best way possible: by going to class.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

Noticed some NFL scouts from San Francisco, Dallas, and Carolina in the Stanford Stadium press box on Friday night. I don’t know what they were looking for, but guys like David Parry may have made a nice impression…

Washington State’s offense is interesting and fun to watch, but it’s not conducive to consistent winning on a week-to-week basis. The quarterback takes too many hits. Worse, it’s one-dimensional. Shut down that dimension, and you have nothing…

The wife went to her first Stanford Football game. Her verdict? “That was fun! It’s so much different in person!” The fireworks didn’t hurt, either…

UCLA linebacker Eddie Vanderdoes punched an Oregon player. Right in front of an official. No ejection? Even more puzzling, the Pac-12 looked at the tape and ruled no further punishment for Vanderdoes…

Years from now, when Old Blues look back at the 2014 cal football season, Jared Goff’s fumbled sneak that Shaq Thompson returned for a 100-yard touchdown will be known as the turning point…

Watching Javorious Allen batter the Wildcats, I couldn’t help but think what a running back like that would look like in Stanford’s backfield…

Two weeks in a row, the home team in the Pac-12’s nightcap shanked a last-second field goal that would have won the game. I wouldn’t mind that trend continuing this week in Tempe…

Hey, have you followed me yet on Twitter? Why not? @TroyClardy.

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… watching that TCU-Baylor game was exhausting enough. I can only imagine what it was like actually being there…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… the state of Mississippi hasn’t received this much positive attention since, well, maybe ever…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… what? Vontaze Burfict is playing a bit too rough in the NFL? Shocker…

PAC-12 PICKS

This is getting ridiculous.

Utah @ Oregon State (Thursday). The Utes are becoming a sexy pick in the Pac-12. If they can get to the quarterback, I certainly like their chances. I like Utah by 10.

UCLA @ cal. Serves me right for picking the Bears last week. The angry Bruins will feel a little better by about 3:30 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. I like UCLA by 17.

Colorado @ U$C. The Trojans are 8-0 all-time versus the Buffs. That trend will continue. I like U$C by 19.

Washington @ Oregon. If the Huskies’ defensive front can set the tone, they have a good shot. But it’s hard for me to take Cyler Myles over Marcus Mariota. And it’s still hard for me to pick the road team to win at Autzen. I like Oregon by 15.

Last week: 0-3 (straight-up), 0-3 (ATS).
This year: 7-8 (straight-up), 4-11 (ATS).
Last year: 35-10 (straight-up), 24-21 (ATS).
