Repelling Cougars

Stanford returned to the friendly confines of Galvez and Sam MacDonald Mall last Friday night to face a highly touted quarterback backed up by a sub-standard defense. This turned out to be just the formula for a necessary, if not flawless, bounce-back victory.

As usual, Stanford allowed an opponent to keep a game a close despite dominating both sides of the ball for significant stretches. Unlike its last conference home game, however, the Cardinal brought too much to the table to allow the wily Cougars to steal a victory.

Slumpbusters

Stanford’s offense was in a state of utter disrepair upon its return from Soggy South Bend. Fortunately, the Washington State defense offered up little to no resistance and, per the usual, allowed its opponent to move the ball consistently. The question was whether or not Stanford could take advantage of its trips inside Cougar territory. While they did manage to put up 34 points on the evening, it’s clear that Stanford continues to struggle in conference in the red zone. Coffee is for closers, and Stanford right now is more George Aaronow than Ricky Roma. Stanford scored on only five of its seven chances inside the Cougar twenty yard line, with only three touchdowns. Currently, Stanford scores touchdowns on 35 percent of its red zone possessions. That is the next to last in the league. The Cardinal’s final two possessions of the first half ended in a fumble by Patrick Skov at the two, and then a missed Jordan Williamson field goal. It’s tough to knock the play-calling on the Skov fumble, though it seems doubtful that Stanford would have scored on that play even had Skov held onto the ball. What about the sequence that led to the Williamson FG? Stanford only reached the WSU 20 with time for the FG attempt, so again, hard to criticize the play-calling, though technically they failed to get a TD on this possession. So let’s look at the six Stanford red zone possessions in which the Cardinal actually had a chance to run offensive plays:

6.

So what are the takeaways here? First we must always caution against the small sample size, but it’s still a decent body of work that does offer some conclusions moving forward. The run/pass was 7/8, so pretty balanced. However, I’d argue that the pass game was more effective than the run game. Also, passing to tight ends was far more effective than passing to wide receivers. The coaches seemed determined to force feed Cajuste, but Taboada had a great day, and when you add Eric Cotton’s 39-yard TD from Hogan, we have some evidence for two of my firmest convictions about the Stanford offense.

First, what works over the rest of the field is a good indicator of what will work in the red zone. Second, throw to the tight ends.

Remound Wright was by far the most effective runner in the red zone for Stanford. This doesn’t mean it’s time to forego the other options, but he seems far better suited to it than Sanders and Young. Getting McCaffrey the ball, especially in space, is a good thing. Tough to say whether he is a viable between-the-tackles goal-line option yet, but he certainly has a place on the field in these situations. Wide receivers are going to be more useful in all likelihood from the 20 to the 10, and that goes for most teams. It’s especially true for Stanford, given that the throws outside the 10 suit Hogan better than the ones he is often asked to attempt from inside the 10.

Hogan Eludes Cougars

Hogan enjoyed far more success throwing the ball against WSU than he did against Notre Dame, and given the respective quality of those defenses and the venue change, that is not a big surprise. However, this may have been his cleanest, best passing game of the year. His was not a laser-like precision, but he kept the ball out of Cougar paws and he hit the big throws he needed to Cotton and Rector. He is clearly comfortable throwing the ball to Trojan and the New Tree Amigos. This doesn’t mean that Montgomery and Cajuste shouldn’t be factors moving forward, but some of their targets would be well-served to be redistributed to the tight ends and Rector. Hogan is clearly better throwing vertical routes and he is better throwing between the numbers. So many passes to Montgomery and Cajuste are horizontal, whether crosses, slants, or outs, or outside the numbers, and while you can’t eliminate these throws, the coaches would be well served to remember they are moving away from Hogan’s strengths when called.

So Stanford moves onto the desert, the scene of its most complete performance last season. The Cardinal offense is not the same unit that trounced Sparky last December. Interestingly, the coaches did a great job of scheming against tendency then, running to the perimeter against a team dedicated to jamming things up between the tackles. This led to Gaffney’s spectacular opening run. Against the Cougars, Stanford’s offense showed a concerted effort to get to the perimeter via the pass and the run. It will be interesting to see which team ASU prepares for, the Stanford of power reputation or the team trying to solidify itself now. Stanford begins the turn on Saturday, and given the insanity running wild in this conference, the team’s No. 1 true goal of winning the Pac-12 is still alive. Stanford will look to turn its South Division struggles around Saturday. Offensively, if they let success be their guide, there’s no reason they shouldn’t be able to find points against ASU. And given the play of the defense, this squad finally has a shot to be the team its fans have been pining for all season long.
