Shaw Takes the Blame

Stanford Head Coach David Shaw says it is time to fix the struggling offense

Stanford football is 4-3 just over halfway through the season and despite a defense that has been mostly awesome, the team is coming off a third loss for the season where the offense has struggled to keep pace.

Tuesday is the day that Head Coach David Shaw meets the media for the first time since reviewing all the game film and turning the attention forward. On this Tuesday, Shaw opened things up by shouldering the blame for what is going on with the offense. Since the Stanford fan base is clearly agitated by what is (or isn’t) happening on offense, I thought it appropriate to offer Shaw’s opening statement in its entirety:

“My stance right now honestly is that I have to do a better job on offense giving our guys chances to be successful. We need to change some things. You’re going to ask for specifics. I am not going to give you specifics. My stance right now is we can’t just continue to do what we have been doing. We have to make some changes. It has to come from me. I take the blame. There is a lot of criticism of our offense and I deserve it. We have too good of personnel in our three losses to score just 10, 10 and 17 points. It is inexcusable with the guys that we have. So I have to do things to help our quarterback who has won a ton of games for us and who has been successful. I have to help him get in rhythm. There are some things we can do to help him. There are things we can do to help our running game. There are things we can do to help our receivers and tight ends. We’ve got guys that can make plays, we have guys that can score points and there are some things structurally. We aren’t talking about scrapping our offense. I’m not talking about that at all. I’m talking about doing more to help our guys. Hopefully that will be evident the rest of the year. We are too talented on the offensive side not to score points. Really had a tough time against a good Arizona State team that basically put us under a lot of pressure. Like I said after the game, we handled the pressure a year ago twice but we did not handle it this past weekend. So take that for what it is worth but I am taking this one personally because I look at our guys and I have to help them. Our guys deserve support. Our guys deserve pats on the back for how hard they play. No matter what the score is our guys play hard. We came back and had a great practice last night. I can’t ask for a better group to work with every single day. These kids love playing football. They love being physical. They love getting after it. As banged up and beat up as we are, nobody is trying to pull out of practice. Guys are trying to practice even if they are a little bit hurt. We had to pull some guys out because we need to. But the energy is there. I have to do a better job helping our guys going forward and I’m going to try and do that.”

Seven games in Shaw knows there are problems. The interesting thing will be what can he do about it? Obviously Shaw won’t give away secrets so the most we can really do is take his word for it that something different will happen on future Saturdays. A common theme from Shaw was on how he would use his players.

“The greatest concern for me is the utilization of our personnel. In spots you’ve seen what our guys can do. You can see what Ty Montgomery can do with the ball in his hands. You have seen Michael Rector average 30 yards a catch for an entire season. You’ve seen Devon Cajuste repeatedly change field position. You’ve seen Kelsey Young break tackles and make plays. You’ve seen our tight ends now, form (Eric) Cotton to (Greg) Taboada to (Austin) Hooper make plays. There is absolutely no reason why that can’t continue for an entire game. Weve got to put those guys in a position to affect the game. I’m not talking about throwing it every down because you have all seen Remound Wright break out as a runner. We’ve got to get him to the second level. We’ve seen Barry Sanders get in space and make people miss and be a productive runner. That is what is really eating me is the personnel we have there is no reason we should score 10 points against anybody we play. We are looking at structurally what we are doing and how we are doing it and we have to make sure we are giving those guys opportunity to affect the game.”

There was an ongoing emphasis on putting players in a position to succeed. But by naming every player on the offense it does eventually comes down to touches and how to distribute the ball. And if Stanford works everybody into the rotation with a few touches each, then how will anyone develop a rhythm, a common theme in the running game all year long.

“I think it is what we take out and what we put in and what we emphasize and how we put guys in positions,” Shaw said being as general as he could be about the changes he plans. “Once again, the biggest thing for me is I have to utilize our personnel better. I just have to. Ty is averaging six catches per game. Not that we’ll scrap the whole offense to get him 12 catches a game but I will continue to give him the ball in positions where he can do something with it. I want to utilize Kelsey Young. I want to utilize Barry Sanders. Utilize Remound Wright for what he has done well. Got to utilize Michael Rector, our tight ends, we have a lot of guys when we put them in positions they make positive things happen. We have to protect our quarterback. When the times he is protected, he could have played better the other night. He didn’t play terrible. When you really look at the film and evaluate everyone, as they always say the coach and the quarterback are going to take the brunt of it when you lose a game. A lot of those things look like Kevin was wrong. He didn’t play that bad. It was not his best game but definitely not his worst game either.”

Shaw knows that some of the natives are restless in the fan base but he is unconcerned by that saying he doesn’t listen to the noise, whether it is grumpy noise or an over congratulatory noise. Shaw said players and coaches don’t live with the day to day emotions. For them it is fix the problems and move on. Shaw was very complementary to his players and how they can leave the past there and move on with great practices, energy and a desire to win.

INJURY UPDATE:

Defensive lineman David Parry is doubtful for the Oregon State game with a leg injury suffered in Tempe. Shaw says it is not season ending. There is hope he’ll return for the Oregon game, but that shall remain to be seen. In Parry’s absence there is a competition for playing time. The better they practice the more snaps they will see. Shaw said Nate Lohn played well Saturday as did true freshman Harrison Phillips. Jordan Watkins is in the mix and if all else fails, Henry Anderson might see a few snaps at nose tackle, although Shaw would like to avoid that.

Devon Cajuste is questionable for the moment. Shaw does sound optimistic he’ll be ready to return on Saturday but they’ll just see how he responds in practice this week. Shaw said that Michael Rector played well Saturday despite the lack of stats and he’ll share the load with Cajuste until Cajuste gets his legs back.

EXPECTATIONS

Things have changed on The Farm. It wasn’t that many years ago where a potential 7-5 season was met with grand celebrations. Now it is met with doom and gloom. “The silver lining to that is we’ve created a program where everybody has high expectations,” Shaw said. “That is not a negative thing. It feels like it when you don’t reach those expectations. For us we have our own high expectations that we are trying to meet. We try to meet those day to day. It’s not just game day but building up to game day. That is a positive, that the people that love Stanford football expect it to be great. I think that is good.”

 OREGON STATE

Next up: The Oregon State Beavers. OSU is 1-2 in Conference and in some ways their play has been similar to Stanford where the defense has far outshined the offense despite a senior quarterback in the mix. Shaw isn’t taken anything for granted as the Beavers have played the Cardinal tough just about every year.

“I don’t think Oregon State needs to look at Arizona State to know how to give us trouble,” Shaw said. “Every game that we have played against them except for one in the last 4-5 years has come down to a one score game. We had as good a pass protection last year as we have had since 2010 until we played Oregon State. They pushed us around. They got under our pads, the line stunts, they pressured the quarterback. Gaffney ended up having a heck of a game but it was tough sledding.”

Senior quarterback Sean Mannion has underperformed compared with expectations, but Shaw isn’t sleeping on him. “He is very, very tall. He can see everything,” Shaw said. “He can see over the top of the defense. Everybody within 50-yards is a viable receiver from sideline to sideline. He showed that last year especially with the numbers he put up. Even when they struggle you never know when he is going to pop one over the top of your defense.”

PAC-12 TITLE

The numbers don’t lie. Stanford is still in the mix to win another Pac-12 Championship. The players and coaches are focused on the next game because they know another loss Will Pretty much end that math. But for now, they have not given up on their goal. “I’ve got a bunch of smart guys. They’ve seen what this conference is like,” Shaw said. “They have seen just about everybody look like the best team in the nation one week and not so much the next week. Every game in this conference is going to be up for grabs somewhere in the fourth quarter. Someone might win by 10 or 14 but at some point in the fourth quarter the games will be in question. That is just how tight the conference is. Nobody is dominant. Nobody is really awful. We’re in it as much as anyone. We have to win a game to stay above 500 in our conference. And play the rest of the season out because you just never know. We were gone and dead last year. I was the worst coach in the nation after Utah. A month and a half later we were in the Rose Bowl. It is college athletics.”

Things\r\n\r\nhave changed on The Farm. It wasn’t that many years ago where a\r\npotential 7-5 season was met with grand celebrations. Now it is\r\nmet with doom and gloom. “The silver lining to that is we’ve\r\ncreated a program where everybody has high expectations,” Shaw\r\nsaid. “That is not a negative thing. It feels like it when you\r\ndon’t reach those expectations. For us we have our own high\r\nexpectations that we are trying to meet. We try to meet those\r\nday to day. It’s not just game day but building up to game day.\r\nThat is a positive, that the people that love Stanford football\r\nexpect it to be great. I think that is good.”

 OREGON STATE                                                                                                                            \r\n\r\n

Next up: The Oregon State Beavers. OSU is 1-2 in\r\nConference and in some ways their play has been similar to\r\nStanford where the defense has far outshined the offense despite\r\na senior quarterback in the mix. Shaw isn’t taken anything for\r\ngranted as the Beavers have played the Cardinal tough just about\r\nevery year.

“I\r\n\r\ndon’t think Oregon State needs to look at Arizona State to know\r\nhow to give us trouble,” Shaw said. “Every game that we have\r\nplayed against them except for one in the last 4-5 years has\r\ncome down to a one score game. We had as good a pass protection\r\nlast year as we have had since 2010 until we played Oregon\r\nState. They pushed us around. They got under our pads, the line\r\nstunts, they pressured the quarterback. Gaffney ended up having\r\na heck of a game but it was tough sledding.”

Senior\r\n\r\nquarterback Sean Mannion has underperformed compared with\r\nexpectations, but Shaw isn’t sleeping on him. “He is very, very\r\ntall. He can see everything,” Shaw said. “He can see over the\r\ntop of the defense. Everybody within 50-yards is a viable\r\nreceiver from sideline to sideline. He showed that last year\r\nespecially with the numbers he put up. Even when they struggle\r\nyou never know when he is going to pop one over the top of your\r\ndefense.”

PAC-12\r\n\r\nTITLE

The\r\n\r\nnumbers don’t lie. Stanford is still in the mix to win another\r\nPac-12 Championship. The players and coaches are focused on the\r\nnext game because they know another loss Will Pretty much end\r\nthat math. But for now, they have not given up on their goal.\r\n“I’ve got a bunch of smart guys. They’ve seen what this\r\nconference is like,” Shaw said. “They have seen just about\r\neverybody look like the best team in the nation one week and not\r\nso much the next week. Every game in this conference is going to\r\nbe up for grabs somewhere in the fourth quarter. Someone might\r\nwin by 10 or 14 but at some point in the fourth quarter the\r\ngames will be in question. That is just how tight the conference\r\nis. Nobody is dominant. Nobody is really awful. We’re in it as\r\nmuch as anyone. We have to win a game to stay above 500 in our\r\nconference. And play the rest of the season out because you just\r\nnever know. We were gone and dead last year. I was the worst\r\ncoach in the nation after Utah. A month and a half later we were\r\nin the Rose Bowl. It is college athletics.”
