Spring game observations

Spring game observations from the not so cheap seats. Well, 50-yard line, 2nd deck, 4th row was cheap today

I think the first reaction from today's Cardinal and White spring football game is that it is a good thing the real bullets don't fly anytime soon. Officially the defense won the game 23-7 in Stanford's unique style of scoring, although we are still looking for the missing four points from when it read 27-7 on the scoreboard. Bottom line is that both sides of the ball had some flashes, but both sides also has some issues to address. But before we start out with the offense or defense, the not so special teams leads off.

Conrad Ukropina missed all three of his field goal attempts (31, 46, 46). Coach David Shaw was none too happy about that.

"The offense drove down the field three times and missed three field goals," Shaw said. "The score would have been much different. The bottom line is that we missed too many field goals last year and we missed too many field goals today in the red zone."

The punting wasn't much better with junior Alex Robinson shanking his first two punts. But through plenty of repetitions he did warm up and one of the loudest shrieks from the field was from Robinson after nailing a 51-yard punt.

Incoming freshman Jake Baily can both kick and punt. Based on today's results, he will compete to play as a true freshman at one or both slots.

-----------------------------------------------------

Now before getting too deep into the observations and reactions, I think it is important to note that this is the first practice I have witnessed this spring. As Coach Shaw said, some days the offense dominates and some days the defense wins. Saturday certainly belonged to the defense. But all I can base my comments on is to what I witnessed, and maybe to a few whispers I may have heard.

Now with that disclaimer we can get on with today's game.

Best players on the field: I know people will talk about Kevin Hogan, and Christian McCaffrey but I like to be a bit different and the two guys who stood out to me on offense were Kyle Murphy and Joshua Garnett. The offense was able to move the ball with the starters out there and a large (literally) reason for that was the left side of the offensive line. In the second half it looked like Murphy may have missed a couple of assignments when he was asked to pull. But when the two big men were asked to man up and get physical, it sure seemed like the won every battle. How could I tell? Everyone will rave about the improved play of the defensive line (myself included) and you were able to notice that great play as soon as Murphy and Garnett came out of the game. The left side of the line looked great to me and often times was pushing defenders three to four yards backwards.

The rest of the line has some moving parts. Graham Shuler, David Bright and Casey Tucker filled out the starting lineup. Johnny Caspers worked in at center and A.T Hall got some first string snaps at guard. Bright also kicked out to right tackle. All had mixed results with some wins and losses along the way. The right side of the line never opened holes like the left side.

-----------------------------------------------

Everybody always loves the backup quarterback. Based on today, Hogan has nothing to fear in terms of losing his job. Hogan looked good for the most part and certainly improved in the second half. Hogan was credited with the stats of 13-19 for 189 yards. (Keep in mind when the QB can't get hit there is some debate as to when there should be a sack and when the play is allowed to continue. Hey, it's spring) Neither Ryan Burns nor Keller Chryst played all that well.

"Not well enough," Shaw described his backup quarterbacks play. "They both had some moments today but it's about stringing those moments together."

Chryst looked like he had great pocket poise, but when he released the ball he was nowhere close completing only one of eight passes. Burns showed his ability to scramble and he had a couple of nice plays including a first down throw of about 15 yards on a deep out to Greg Taboada on the sideline. But he also missed some downfield receivers and didn't look comfortable in the pocket in the face of the pass rush.

-----------------------------------------------

The offense will likely be as good as Kevin Hogan and Christian McCaffrey can be. McCaffrey has clearly added some size but has not lost any speed. He was way too fast for the second string defense. He's a play maker. It will be on the offensive coaching staff to get him the touches. Barry J. Sanders ran well today as well showing some of the potential Cardinal fans have always believed he has gaining 58 yards on 10 carries.

---------------------------------------------

One of the reasons the offense may have struggled. They were playing without several stars. Devon Cajuste and Francis Owusu were both out. Cajuste went through warm ups but with a stiff hamstring nobody was in the mood to gamble. Other players to sit out included Kevin Anderson, Jesse Burkett, Brendon Austin, Patrick Skov, Nate Lohn, Sam Yules, Aziz Shittu and Ronnie Harris.

--------------------------------------------

On defense, the line is going to be the unit to be watched all season. Early returns indicate this unit may be better than advertised, but they are ultra thin. Solomon Thomas was a monster and really stuck out. He had great push off the ball, he showed power when he needed it and speed to get past slower moving offensive lineman. Harrison Phillips also looks bigger and better than the true freshman we saw last year. Jordan Watkins has the body, and finally seems ready to step up. The incredible number of snaps this unit has played this spring can only help. Shittu should be ready for the fall. They should be in decent shape for the start of the season, but if one or two of them go down, the pure numbers just aren't there.

------------------------------------------

Good competition at linebacker. As Shaw said, Blake Martinez is on verge of being a star. He has that Shane Skov type of look to him but probably more fundamentally sound. He caused the one interception by deflecting a pass. He would have had a sack on a blitz had they let him hit the quarterback.

"He's got a great feel for the game. He's physical, he's fast and he's hard to block," Shaw said.

Noor Davis and Kevin Palma seem to be in competition to play next to him. We've seen them both play well at times last year.

Leading up to the game there has been a buzz about OLB Joey Alfieri. You could see it in the first half at least. He played with great energy, seemed to have a nose for the ball, and seemed to just be a cog in that offensive line machine. Mike Tyler also made a couple of nice plays at the OLB position, especially maintaining outside contain on a reverse to Michael Rector that looked like could be a big play but he limited to only four yards.

-------------------------------------------------

The defensive backfield is interesting. There is some real talent there. But there is not a lot of experience. Dallas Lloyd made the pick off of the Martinez tip. Kodi Whitfield had a very nice pass defense covering a tight end over the middle. Brandon Simmons is a physical guy who made a couple of hits but also just missed a few in the line. When he gets dialed in?

Of course with the offense struggling so and most of the offense running through the tight ends it was hard to truly grade how good the secondary was playing.

That said, Alijah Holder had a heck of a game. He displayed some good coverage, he made some hard hits, and he had the play of the game when he stripped the ball away from Austin Hooper. (More on that play in a bit).

"Every time we look up Alijah Holder makes a play," Shaw said.

------------------------------------------------

The play of the game was made by Holder. Hogan threw over the top to Hooper who caught the ball in stride for what looked to be a big gain. Holder though came up from behind and in making the tackle reached out and grabbed the ball away for the turnover.

"He caught me," Hooper grimaced. "I was running and got it loose a little bit. I thought it was just one-on-one and I beat the safety and its a touchdown. Alijah made a great play coming underneath my arm and pulling it out. I didn't even see him. He just grabbed me from behind. I have to keep it high and tight. The coaches preach it. I guess I learned it the hard way there."

From Holder's point of view? "Hooper caught the ball but he wasn't looking my way. I saw the ball in his right hand. I just had the chance and made the play."

Hooper has been very impressed from what he has seen by all of the young defensive backs.

"They're inexperienced but they are very talented. Just seeing them from practice one to where they are today, they've grown a tremendous amount. They came out here and they made plays."

Holder agrees the defense has made great strides. "I feel like we have really progressed as a defense. We've had three scrimmages including this one and so far this is the most dominating one we have had. The past two it feels like the offense has been getting more touchdowns on us. We really came out today and we really just put our foot down and we didn't let them come through."

For Holder's part he says he is really working on the physical side of the game.

"You can't be content ever after a game. There is always things you can do better. But for me, I just always want to be a physical corner. Corners can get the rep of being finesse. Just being on the outside they don't really have to be  physical. But coach Akina really demands the most physical corners. He really wants us to be really good press corners before being a cover corner. So just my play today I have just been trying to get some presses. I would say the majority of them worked and that is a credit to my coach and his coaching."

And that is what he'll spend his summer working on as well.

"I can have the mental part, but it is all about having the best of both worlds. Being strong and being mentally strong. So this offseason I'm really going to work on getting my bench up so I can get that press up, and get those squats in so I can get a good hit."

Hooper isn't putting his head down after the fumble or the struggling offensive performance. He likes where things are going between him and his quarterback.

"The more I play with Kevin the more comfortable we've been around each other. He knows exactly where I am. He knows my skill set. He knows what I can do. And I know where he likes me to be and we talk about it all the time. We have a good chemistry out there on the field. Hopefully we can keep that going."

--------------------------------------------

Bottom line: This was a spring game. There was certainly some good things to take away from it. There are certainly some concerns that need to be worked on. But come training camp, with the return of some injured players and the influx of a large freshman class, the Stanford team we see in September won't look like the Cardinal and White we saw today.

That said, Alijah Holder had a heck of a game. He displayed some good coverage, he made some hard hits, and he had the play of the game when he stripped the ball away from Austin Hooper. (More on that play in a bit).

\"Every time we look up Alijah Holder makes a play,\" Shaw said.

------------------------------------------------

The play of the game was made by Holder. Hogan threw over the top to Hooper who caught the ball in stride for what looked to be a big gain. Holder though came up from behind and in making the tackle reached out and grabbed the ball away for the turnover.

\"He caught me,\" Hooper grimaced. \"I was running and got it loose a little bit. I thought it was just one-on-one and I beat the safety and its a touchdown. Alijah made a great play coming underneath my arm and pulling it out. I didn't even see him. He just grabbed me from behind. I have to keep it high and tight. The coaches preach it. I guess I learned it the hard way there.\"

From Holder's point of view? \"Hooper caught the ball but he wasn't looking my way. I saw the ball in his right hand. I just had the chance and made the play.\"

Hooper has been very impressed from what he has seen by all of the young defensive backs.

\"They're inexperienced but they are very talented. Just seeing them from practice one to where they are today, they've grown a tremendous amount. They came out here and they made plays.\"

Holder agrees the defense has made great strides. \"I feel like we have really progressed as a defense. We've had three scrimmages including this one and so far this is the most dominating one we have had. The past two it feels like the offense has been getting more touchdowns on us. We really came out today and we really just put our foot down and we didn't let them come through.\"

For Holder's part he says he is really working on the physical side of the game.

\"You can't be content ever after a game. I would say the majority of them worked and that is a credit to my coach and his coaching.\"

And that is what he'll spend his summer working on as well.

\"I can have the mental part, but it is all about having the best of both worlds. Being strong and being mentally strong. So this offseason I'm really going to work on getting my bench up so I can get that press up, and get those squats in so I can get a good hit.\"

Hooper isn't putting his head down after the fumble or the struggling offensive performance. He likes where things are going between him and his quarterback.

\"The more I play with Kevin the more comfortable we've been around each other. He knows exactly where I am. He knows my skill set. He knows what I can do. And I know where he likes me to be and we talk about it all the time. We have a good chemistry out there on the field. Hopefully we can keep that going.\"
