Radio Voices Breakdown the Season

A preview of the season ahead with the three men who will call the games for the Stanford Cardinal

In search of a single source of truth regarding Stanford’s chances in the upcoming season, we crossed paths with…three of them. The offseason saw The Bootleg catch up with the Cardinal’s radio voices. Todd Husak, John Platz and Scott Reiss.  Their insights will surely get you excited for a season of high expectations on The Farm.

The Bootleg: Insert yourselves as an offensive coordinator: How does Stanford, with a year to prepare and fix their mistakes, maintain the success they enjoyed in the last three games of last year?

Todd Husak: It’s all about having the right mindset. Stanford’s offense has to have an aggressive mindset, one that uses all its talent to the fullest and isn’t afraid to take chances. There’s still plenty of talent on the defense, but they can’t rely and bank on allowing less than 20 points every game. That means abandoning a power run game in favor of putting the ball in the hands of a Christian McCaffrey more, or letting Kevin Hogan do the things he was able to accomplish late last season. Personally, I’d like to see this group channel what we were able to do my senior year, the 1999 Rose Bowl season. We were the aggressors on offense. It’s not like the defense that year was totally helpless. They could really force turnovers and get after the passer. But we took chances down the field on the offense. The deciding factor in so many of those games that year was our ability to get the ball into the hands of our playmakers.

Scott Reiss:
It all starts with Kevin Hogan.  If he plays like he did in those last three games, Stanford will score a lot of points and be very tough to beat.  They played faster at the end of the season, and Kevin was more decisive.  Stanford under David Shaw will never abandon the power, "beat 'em up at the point of attack" philosophy - nor should they - but it's critical that they utilize the skill sets of their best offensive weapons to the greatest extent possible.  Get McCaffrey in space.  Get (Barry) Sanders in space.  Use (Remound) Wright for more of the between the tackles work - but at the same time, don't marry certain guys to certain roles so as to become predictable.  Oh, and make maximum use of this incredible stable of tight ends.  Lots of play action, multiple TE formations.  We were able to consistently befuddle defenses in 2010-12 (see: Orange Bowl), no reason that can't be replicated.

John Platz:
In 2014, it wasn’t until the last three games of the year where you saw the both sides of the ball performing in sync and at a high level together. You’d like to see the offense this season really take the lead and force the issue for the opponent. Hogan was, let’s be honest, brilliant against UCLA last year. With all the playmakers back and an offensive line with all kinds of talent and experience, the potential for an entire season’s worth of what we saw over those last few games is there. To expand on what Todd said, I think Stanford has always had that aggressive mindset under Harbaugh and Shaw. Their success this year I believe will have less to do with less blocking and tackling and more about those unconventional methods – four tight ends who wreak havoc on defenders, Christian McCaffrey on the outside or wherever – this team has at its disposal.  It’s unprecedented, certainly with Hogan under center, the amount of weapons this offense has.

TB: Is the defensive line or the secondary the most vulnerable part of the defense in 2015? On that side of the ball, what player departure do you see as the most significant? What new starter on the "D: must step in right away and fill the biggest shoes?

SR:
Depends on your definition of "vulnerable."  I am more concerned about the secondary simply because of the inexperience.  It's not easy to roll out of bed as a "lock down" Pac-12 cornerback, but youngsters like Elijah Holder and Alameen Murphy will have to be good immediately.  Kodi (Whitfield) and Dallas Lloyd at safety are veterans of the program but still relatively inexperienced in their current roles, so we don't really know what to expect there either.

Good news is, we have more athleticism in the secondary than we have had since - well, pretty much ever - and a lot of depth, albeit young depth.  As for the defensive line, I really like our core of four guys – (Brennan) Scarlett, (Aziz) Shittu, Phillips, and Thomas. I think Thomas is the guy I look at to fill the "biggest shoes," because we lost a superstar in Henry Anderson and Thomas seems likely to become a superstar in his own right.  Dude is beastly and hasn't played a down yet.

TB:
Last year, nobody in the preseason was saying much about Peter Kalambayi or Blake Martinez, while few could have envisioned how important Christian McCaffrey would turn out to be. Who do you envision as this year's equivalent(s), who come out of the shadows and make things happen?

TH:
Dalton Schultz has emerged as one of the standout players in camp. In him you’re talking about a redshirt freshman who looks like the most talented of what is already a talented group of tight ends. Physically, I’d compare him to Zach Ertz. He could be the guy who joins the pantheon of great Stanford tight ends from the last 10 years. I like what (true freshman cornerback) Quenton Meeks brings to the secondary as a nickel back. (Sophomore linebacker) Joey Alfieri looks like he’s going to be a contributor.

SR:
If Thomas counts, then he'd be my first answer.  Although given the hype, I'm not sure he's really in the "shadows" at least not internally.  Holder, Murphy, and Meeks have turned a lot of heads during camp, and we will need at least one to have a breakthrough season in a pass-happy conference.  Offensively, Dalton Shultz is an absolute stud.

TB: There's a lot to like in college football these days like the long-awaited playoff system, the sheer amount of coverage, in addition to the parity that has allowed everyone from Stanford to Baylor to Michigan State to finally enjoy the spotlight. But there's a lot to be desired (coaches salaries escalating, lack of consistent punishment from the NCAA, decreased attendance nationally, etc.) Give me two things you would change that would make college football even better than it is.

JP:
From a broad perspective, I think the game is healthy. I compare it to what college basketball is experiencing right now – an attendance problem, a generally watered-down product compared to what is once was – and see a game that’s very healthy and very popular. My hope is that everyone keeps all the money that’s going around from hurting what is a thriving product.

TH:
Let me mention the Number 1 I think needs fixing: The NCAA and their policy of selectively enforcing rules and punishment. I don’t see consistency, which if you’re talking about rules and precedent, is important. It’s not fair that on one hand you get a single player’s misdeeds – Reggie Bush – leading to what amounts to a half decade’s worth probation for USC. The same year the NCAA came down on USC, you had Cam Newton and Auburn essentially rewarded for their infractions. The NCAA acknowledged fault on the part of Cecil Newton by banning him from the Heisman Trophy ceremony, yet his son kept the award and won a national championship.  How is what occurred at Auburn any better than at USC? A system with those results is begging to be fixed.

SR:
First, level the playing field with regard to number of conference games.  We play nine, certain other conferences (ahem, SEC) play eight and take full advantage of the system by scheduling Furman the week before the biggest game of the year (EDITOR’S NOTE: FCS opponents face six Pac-12 teams in 2015, none after Sept. 19. Twelve of the SEC’s 14 members have an FCS foe on their docket, with three matchups slated for November).  It's a competitive advantage in terms of the playoff race, not to mention just plain offensive in general.  Second - and this will never happen because of television - but wouldn't it be great if had more fan-friendly game times on a consistent basis?

TB:  Fill in the blanks: Stanford will contend for a Pac-12 title because....? Stanford will fall short of its goals, like last year, because....

SR:
Stanford will contend for a Pac-12 title if the offense picks up where it left off, the defense takes only a modest step back (which I think is inevitable with all the attrition from last season's elite unit), and the kicking game doesn't cost us wins.  That last one is huge. I can't remember a time when Stanford had this many question marks on special teams heading into a season.  Kicker, punter, kick returner.  The latter concerns me less, though we did lose a special return man in Ty Montgomery.  But until I see a few 45 yards punts and 45 yards field goals in game situations, I will worry.

Stanford will fall short of its goals if... well, take the opposite of the above conditions.  If Hogan struggles or - heaven forbid - gets hurt, we're in trouble.  All indications are there is no reliable "Plan B" right now, not for a team with championship aspirations.  The offense HAS to be significantly better than it was last season for Stanford to get where it wants to go.  If our young secondary doesn't grow up quickly, we will surrender more than our fair share of points. Ditto if our defensive line doesn't stay healthy.  We are perilously thin there if someone goes down.

TH:
Stanford will contend because its offense has the ability to create mismatches all over the field. The roster includes skill position players not a single coach in this conference would turn down. They have the unique ability to outscore teams, a quality that you just haven’t seen over the last few years.

On the other hand, It’s going to be a major challenge for the defense to replace experience. When you talk about replacing David Parry and Henry Anderson from the defensive line, that’s tough. The defensive line – where Stanford had that ability who shuffle guys in and keep guys fresh over a 13, 14-week period – could potentially become a problem.
