Clardy’s Corner: Worst-Case Scenario

Another season of Stanford Football is here, and the Card are expected to have another fine season. What could possibly go wrong?

Rule #1 of Internet commentary: the sky is always falling.

Normally, I break that rule, and I take pride in doing so. Normally, I’m quite moderate in how I approach these Corners. Sure, I’ll criticize when and where I think it’s warranted, and I’ll always tell the truth as I see it. By and large, though, I have little use for hot takes and no room for negative energy. Life is too short, you know?

But this time, I’m going to observe that rule. So, just for this Corner, I'm going to live where some people like to live. I’m going to dive down with you into the depths of a Cardinalmaniac’s deepest, darkest fears. I am going to give you my list of worst-case scenarios for Stanford Football this season.

Granted, for some Stanford fans, the Cardinal are already coming off a 2014 season that seemed like one big worst-case scenario. An offense that spent much of the season refusing to move, especially in the red zone. Losses to USC and Utah that made you want to go home and drink straight from the bottle. The defense letting one slip away in South Bend. Walking into the Foster Farms Bowl with the feeling that things could have gone so much better and been so much bigger.

So what sort of things could trip up the Card in 2015? Let’s begin where most things usually start for Stanford Football: the quarterback.

Kevin Hogan is the only Stanford quarterback to start in two Rose Bowls. (Think about that for a second.) He jumpstarted the Card when he took over the starting job in 2012. He also fought through much of last season while quietly dealing with his father's failing health. At all times, and by all indications, Hogan has been a great ambassador for the Stanford Football brand.

That's how all fans should see Hogan. But many fans may see him as a quarterback who struggles making critical throws, doesn’t seem to take control of games, and, well, isn’t Andrew Luck.

So what happens if Hogan doesn’t progress? What if he doesn’t build upon his performances at the end of last season? What if he doesn’t play the way people think a senior with two Rose Bowls under his belt should play? Those would be detrimental developments for the Card’s hopes.

(of course, the real worst-case scenario here is that Hogan gets hurt, pushing an inexperienced backup – Ryan Burns? Keller Chryst? Can Robbie Picazo come down from the coaches booth? – into a pool full of barracudas. Meanwhile in Westwood, Josh Rosen throws 62 touchdown passes, turns the Pac-12 into his own personal seven-on-seven drill, leads the Bruins to the national championship as a true freshman, and shows such mastery of the college game in just one year that he is given a special exemption to head straight to the NFL Draft, where he is taken Number One overall by the San Francisco 49ers. Heck, based on what I’ve seen on the BootBoard Plus the past few months, sounds like some of you have already had that vision. Back to the Corner…)

Hogan needs to raise his game to a consistently higher level. I think we can all agree on that. But he also needs to get more help. From his offensive line, from his running backs, from his receivers, from the playcalling, from everybody. And therein lies the true worst-case scenario for the entire offensive scheme. And we actually saw it last season.

The Cardinal sputtered through most of 2014 because the offensive line couldn’t open holes, and the running backs couldn’t push piles or break tackles. For an offensive scheme that revolves around power running, that’s a fatal combination.

For this team to get where it can possibly can, it cannot spend a second season stuck in neutral for much of the ride. Much of that will depend on an Andrus Peat-less line and a stable of backs looking to prove themselves.

This brings us to Christian McCaffrey, who promises to be the Card’s most dynamic offensive weapon. He is the kind of open-field threat that killed Stanford for decades, and how he is used may dictate how far the Stanford offense goes.

Hide him in the backfield. Put him in the slot. Move him around. Make the defense account for him on every snap. A plan like that could make McCaffrey look like the 1990 version of Glyn Milburn.

Now, the worst-case scenario with McCaffrey is that he ends up looking like the 1992 version of Glyn Milburn. The talent was there, but the big plays and the dominant games were not. The stats looked fine, but it wasn’t anywhere near the kind of season people thought he might have. McCaffrey needs to be a factor on every snap, whether he gets the ball or not.

Much of the angst has centered around the offense, but the Treefense has its share of worst-case scenarios looming in the distance, too. A line missing David Parry that can no longer hold the point of attack and disrupt the middle against Oregon. Blake Martinez going from Superman to Clark Kent. A young secondary struggling to gel, all while Cody Kessler and the USC Trojans take full advantage.

Oh, and the kicking game could look every bit as rough as it did during the spring game. A lot of teams have had their seasons devolve into worst-case scenarios thanks to faulty special teams.

Now, I don’t think there is any worst-case scenario – short of some Tim Beckman-type stuff – that would have Stanford showing David Shaw the door at the end of the season. It’s such a ridiculous notion right now that I feel silly even addressing it.

As for my personal worst-case scenario? If they don’t have that pomegranate water in the press box this year, I’m going to be very unhappy. That stuff is amazing.

There is plenty on the line for Stanford Football in 2015, and there are plenty of things that could go off-track. Heck, every year something doesn’t go as planned. But, all in all, this should be another fine season of football on The Farm.

Seniors graduate, some players regress, and coaches make calls they’d love to have back. But as the season begins, there is nothing serious to indicate a tremendous drop-off from the high level Stanford has been playing on for the past six seasons. There are no alarms, no red flags. There is no major, glaring reason to dread watching this team take the field. Not right now. Not to me, anyway.

Now, I’m not punching Stanford’s ticket to the Rose Bowl or a playoff game. Far from it. A lot of things are going to need to fall perfectly into place for Stanford to be in that mix. But the snowball that would send the Cardinal towards a truly disappointing season would need to be so much bigger.

To some fans, the 2014 season was awful and disappointing, a worst-case scenario come true. Still, I've said it before, and I'll say it again: if your program's worst-case scenario is an eight-win season, then your program is in good shape.

But even with all the worst-case scenarios out there for 2015, with all the gloom-and-doom, how far can this team fall? Out of bowl contention? I don’t think so.

And I’m praying we don’t find out.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

I was impressed by freshman RB Bryce Love during the open scrimmage on The Farm a couple of weeks ago. Impressed enough to burn his redshirt? If the coaches think he’s earned the playing time, why not?

If you’re going to Chicago this week for the game and have a taste for deep dish, go to Geno’s East. You’re welcome…

After watching his team play to an entertaining but soul-crushing tie against Northwestern, Bill Walsh spent part of the postgame standing at the spot where Eric Abrams missed the chip-shot game-winning field goal at the buzzer. Walsh looked down at the spot, looked up at the uprights, rolled his eyes, shook his head, and walked away. Not good memories the last time the Card took Evanston…

I'm not saying Cal is going to challenge for a Pac-12 North title this year. I am saying that the Bears are going to surprise some folks and probably end up playing somewhere in late December. It all depends on that defense...

My friends south of I-40 won’t like me for saying this, but the Pac-12 South is far, far more intriguing than the SEC West. But it’s still not as intriguing as the Big 10 East…

Forced to pick a Pac-12 South champ right now, I’d go with Arizona State

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… do yourself a favor and read Jonathan Martin’s explanation for why he retired from football. It’s why I always tell people that if they only knew what their friendly neighborhood NFL player actually had to do to play in games and keep their jobs, they’d probably retire early, too…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… just so we’re clear, DeflateGate is not about deflating balls or the so-called “integrity of the game.” This whole thing is about the other NFL owners wanting to take Robert Kraft down a notch, and Roger Goodell wanting to prove that he can take down any player in the league, even if that player is America’s Sweetheart…

Not a Pac-12 thought, but… if you flip on the Pac-12 Networks this fall, don’t be surprised if you see a familiar face or hear a familiar voice. It has been a thrill to join the Pac-12 as an announcer! Already two games in to my dozen-match slate of soccer games. Looking forward to diving into hoops, baseball, and softball again, too! And no, I have no comment on the whole DirecTV thing...
