Clardy's Corner: Order Restored

Just when it seemed that things were out of whack for Stanford fans, the Cardinal restored order against the USC Trojans.

Admit it. When you woke up Sunday morning, you felt centered and whole again as a Stanford fan, didn't you?

Admit it. The last couple of seasons, things had seemed a bit out of whack for Stanford fans, hadn't it?

It's not hard to figure out why. For a time, Stanford beating USC had become as much of an annual tradition as Christmas, the Fourth of July, and me being horribly confused by the MTV VMAs.

But after four straight wins over USC, that tradition came to an end in 2013, when the Trojans upset the Cardinal (given how the history of this series still tilts decisively in USC's direction, it still feels kinda odd typing that phrase). And of course, there was the 2014 result, which made a lot of Stanford fans want to go home and throw something.

I don't know if Stanford's 41-31 win over USC put the Card in the drivers' seat in the Pac-12 (it's way too early for that kind of talk, I think). But I do know this: last week's result restored order.

After looking completely uncentered more often than not over its past 16 games, the Stanford offense looked much more cohesive than it has since, well, maybe Number 12 was quarterback. Kevin Hogan was sharper than I've ever seen him, even with a bum ankle. Outside of a third-down overthrow to a wide-open Remound Wright early in the game, I don't think Hogan made a bad throw or decision the entire game.

For the first time in a while, the offensive line consistently opened holes. The tight ends made key contributions. After having a rough start to his season, Devon Cajuste came through with the biggest catch of the game, a touchdown just before halftime that the Trojans never truly seemed to recover from.

Although the defense looked like it was in over its head in the first half, it steadied itself, got critical stops, and slowed the Trojans in the second half. And Conrad Ukropina came through with another huge kick.

Stanford restored order as a team. Even better, they did it at the Coliseum, in front of Traveler, the Song Girls, and 78,000-plus surprised fans from both sides. And even more important, they did it on national prime time TV. That's what really counts these, days, right?

As a result, Stanford is back in the national conversation in a good way (as opposed to how it fit in college football's national narrative two weeks ago), and back in the polls. USC is ranked, in all honesty, about where they should have been all along. And the new Pac-12 order that was established around 2009, with the Trojans looking up at the Cardinal, seems to have been restored for another year.

David Shaw seemed to place re-centering things between Stanford and USC as top priority too. That's why he gathered his team together during the pregame meeting and asked all the players who had played in a Pac-12 Championship Game to stand up.

After about 20 players stood, Shaw reminded his team, as he recounted to the media on Tuesday, "we haven't played our best, but it wasn't that long ago when we were the best. And a lot of those guys made it happen."

Shaw also reminded his players that if someone gathered the USC players together and told all the guys who had played in a Pac-12 Championship Game to stand up, not one player would have risen from his seat. Not one.

The message about restoring order was sent. Four hours later, Stanford seemed a bit more likely to appear in its third Pac-12 Championship Game than USC did to make its first. And two days later, Shaw won the national Coach of the Week award. (which probably drives some of you nuts. For more on this, check out yesterday's TreeCast podcast...)

So all appears right with a Cardinalmaniac's world right now. But things can and will change in the blink of an eye. Interestingly enough, this year's Stanford squad has already experienced that before. No other college football team this year has gone from hero to zero to hero again, all before the first day of autumn. Stanford Football was a national punchline after the first week of the season. The players and coaches don't want that to happen again, for a variety of reasons.

And if this week isn't the epitome of a Trap Game, I don't know what is. Another road game -- this one on a short week -- to face a young and unpredictable Oregon State Beavers squad in a stadium where many a ranked team has met its doom in prime time.

A loss can turn order into chaos very quickly. USC is experiencing that now. You can ask an Alabama fan right now for their thoughts on this, too. If the Cardinal aren't careful, they could experience it next week. Here's the truth: in college football, peace and order usually last only as long as the next week's game.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

As of Wednesday morning, the kickoff time for Stanford's game against Arizona still has not been announced. In case you're counting, that game is supposed to be played in ten days. Ummm...shouldn't there be a way for the TV guys to figure out kickoff times no fewer than two weeks out?

I had one TV on Stanford-USC and another on Cal-Texas. Every time I looked at the Cal TV, I saw someone in an orange shirt running a long way with the football. Bears defense might not quite be Pac-12 ready just yet...

Cal churns out 280 yards rushing...without Daniel Lasco? While I suspect that says more about the Texas defense, that's still pretty impressive by the Bears...

What? Josh Rosen threw three picks in the first half against BYU? He just might be human after all...

BYU played at UCLA last week. Ohhhh...so that's why I couldn't find a seat on a flight from Salt Lake City to Los Angeles last week...

Need a good breakfast spot in Salt Lake City? Head to The Avenues neighborhood and drop by the Straw Market. You'll eat well, you'll get great service, you'll hear great tunes over the PA system (come for the full version of New Order's "Blue Monday", stay for "Saved By Zero" from The Fixx), and you won't break the bank doing it. And if you're lucky they may even throw in a free cinnamon roll with your order! Next time you're in Salt Lake, give them a visit...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... Leonard Fournette. My God.

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... Terrell Owens is a first-ballot Pro Football Hall of Famer. Well, he should be, anyway...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... if Northern Illinois had any offense -- any offense at all! -- they would have pulled off one of the shockers of the century...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... watched The Muppets on Tuesday night. Good to see Statler and Waldorf still have their fastball...

PAC-12 PICKS

It's that time of year again! As usual, I'll put my credibility and reputation on the line every week with these picks. As usual, I won't pick games involving Stanford. And as usual, these picks are for entertainment purposes only...if you're using them for anything else, well, that's on you. Off we go!

Cal (-4) @ Washington: Jared Goff is starting to get some serious national love, and deservedly so. And it looks like the Bears may actually be able to win games in hostile environments. That defense will still make things very, very dramatic, though. I like Cal by 2.

UCLA (-3 1/2) @ Arizona: The Game of the Week, as the winner gets a leg up in the treacherous Pac-12 South. But even though Arizona Stadium has never been an intimidating place for visiting teams, why do I get a feeling that Josh Rosen is about to get a hard lesson in what it takes to win on the road? I like Arizona by 10. Getting Scooby Wright back wouldn't be a bad thing for the Wildcats, either.

Utah @ Oregon (-12): No, the Ducks don't seem to be completely clicking on all cylinders. But they'll still have more than enough for the Utes. I like Oregon by 23.

USC (-5 1/2) @ Arizona State: Did you know the Sun Devils have won three of the last four over the Trojans? By Saturday night, you can make it four out of five. I like Arizona State by 9.
