Clardy's Corner: Feeding the Beast

In feeding the beast that is television, is college football biting off more than it can chew? For Troy, it's worth exploring...and it's personal.

As an announcer for the Pac-12 Network, I love the fact that Stanford's matchup against Arizona will be airing on the network this Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m.

As a college football fan, I'm not thrilled about the fact that we didn't know either the time or the channel until this past Sunday.

It's hard for me to believe that keeping everyone in the dark on what time the kickoff is going to be until six days before the game is actually played is in the fan's best interests. But it's a sign of the times in college football, where the most popular kickoff time is "TBD."

I remember back when the surest way to spark a brawl on the BootBoard Plus would be to bring up Stanford Football's kickoff times. There was a time when every week seemed filled with Cardinalmaniacs complaining that kickoffs were too late, too early, not convenient, whatever. It seemed to me like many Stanford fans were more interested in insisting on kickoff times that centered around their own personal schedules, instead of showing up at the stadium and being in their seats at the kickoff, no matter what time it was.

I never understood that. On some level, I still don't. For some fanbases, it doesn't matter what time the game starts. If Nick Saban wanted to do some crazy kind of Midnight Madness thing and kick off in the middle of the night, no one would complain. And Bryant-Denny Stadium would be packed and ready to go at kickoff. Even at midnight.

You lose me when you're complaining about start times. But if you're upset that these kickoff times sometimes aren't even announced until as little as six days before the games, I'm right there with you. Heck, I'm ahead of you.

The reason for these short notices, of course, is obvious: television. The networks want the most attractive matchups to air in the most desirable viewing windows. Sometimes, the most attractive matchups don't reveal themselves until the previous week's action is done.

But the networks have almost all the scheduling pull because of the billions (!) of dollars of revenue generated from television broadcast rights fees. As with anything else, you have to follow the money.

The good news? Since as many conferences and schools want a piece of the pie as possible, and with all these new broadcast networks and entities popping up, and with more athletic conferences taking control of their content, chances are pretty good that you can always watch your school play.

Heck, I was flipping through the channels last Saturday, and you wouldn't believe some of the matchups that somehow found airtime (Holy Cross-Colgate anyone?). I saw "Indiana vs. Wake Forest" on my channel listings and got a bit excited...then I remembered it was football, not basketball. And I avoided that channel like the plague. As I've said before, life is too short to watch bad football.

Still, the fact that every Stanford Football game is now televised has to be considered progress. Remember the days when that wasn't the case? Actually, they weren't that long ago. Unless you were one of the 47,816 who saw David Shaw's first game as the Card's head coach in person, you didn't see it. It wasn't on TV. That was in 2011, by the way.

And think back to 2008, when three Stanford Football games weren't televised at all. That was back when I worked in Bristol, and I remember Mel Kiper, Jr. being very disappointed he couldn't watch the Cardinal play Arizona that year. Then I changed the subject to pumpkin pie and the old Baltimore Colts -- two of his favorite things -- and that put him in a better place.

Obviously, things have changed since then. And it's directly due to all the television revenue that's out there. Seems natural, then, that since TV is paying the bills, it also gets to decide what time your team plays and what channel you get to watch it on.

The tradeoff? Well, we just saw it. Many times, that decision does not come until 12 days -- or, sometimes, six days -- before the game. It's not convenient for anyone. But convenience takes a back seat to revenue, to feeding the beast that is television.

College football is the best spectator sport in the country. Nothing can beat the color, carnival, sound, and fury of big-time college football at its best. And even if you can't make it person, it's a fantastic TV product, too. There are few things better than seeing the opening shots of a stadium that is jam-packed with a capacity crowd, the bands blaring, the students being rabid, and everyone having the time of their lives. It makes you wish you were there.

But when it becomes easier to stay at home and watch the game on television, many fans will do just that. That means more empty seats at stadiums. That means less color, carnival, sound, and fury. That means a less compelling product. Which generally means fewer viewers. Which eventually means less revenue. Which is when the beast gets angry and destroys things.

Kickoff times that are not set until six days before the game is actually played are not conducive to improving the fan experience, at the stadium or at home. I certainly wish there was a way to better serve the paying customers. The folks who actually want to go to the games in person. The fans who shell out big bucks for donations and season tickets. The people who are willing to travel long distances to represent their school, but have to wait until they know which flight to book. And buying plane tickets six days before a flight can be quite expensive.

Is there a better way for the conferences and the TV networks to walk the line between satisfying the viewer on the couch, the spectator in the stadium, and the executives in the corner office? If there is, I'm all for it. If it means doing away with the six-day selection window, I'd be tickled pink.

And for me, it’s a little personal, because now I am part of the beast. I work for the Pac-12 Network now, and I'm proud to do so. It's a dream come true, and I love very second of it. I'm also fully cognizant of the fact that, in some way, I'm personally getting a tiny, tiny crumb or two from the revenue pie. And to be honest, I’d love to keep that going for a long, long time.

That's probably why I'm more sensitive to it all now. I'm even more vested in the conferences and networks finding ways to feed the beast without cannibalizing a great product. To eat as much as it can without finding the choke point.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

Stat of the Week: In the first 25 minutes against UCF, Kevin Hogan was 5-of-14 for 67 yards. Since then – and starting with a flea-flicker touchdown pass to Michael Rector – Hogan is 39-of-52 for 716 yards, seven touchdowns, and a pick (that clanged off his receiver’s chest)…

They're young. They need to hit the weight room. And Gary Andersen needs to keep bringing in his players. But I have a feeling that last week might be as easy as things get for Stanford against Oregon State in the years to come...

In case you missed Tuesday's TreeCast podcast (hosted by yours truly), Pac-12 Network football analyst Yogi Roth shared what he learned about Stanford and the rest of the conference last weekend. It's a great chat! Check it out here...

Maybe I should have paid a bit more attention when Eastern Washington was shredding Oregon's secondary, and Cooper Kupp was becoming a household name. That Duck defense has some major work to do...

Yeah, I admit it. I have a man-crush on Tom Hackett...

I have a feeling that September 26, 2015 will forever be known as "Black Saturday" in the Grand Canyon State. Soul-crushing losses for the Wildcats and the Sun Devils...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... I found myself at Spartan Stadium last Saturday night for a little Fresno State-San Jose State action. Watching SJSU RB Tyler Ervin set a school mark with 300 yards rushing was cool. But after bumping into former Bulldog head coach Pat Hill in the press box, one question popped into my mind: was that epic Fresno State-USC game really ten years ago this fall? Wow...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... Indiana is 4-0? Great. Call me when they're 5-0. They play Ohio State next, by the way...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... stop complaining about the fact that the MLB Wild Card playoff is only one game. That's perfect. If you don't want everything to come down to one game, there's a simple solution: win your division. You have 162 chances to do it. Also, Game 7 of this year's World Series is scheduled to be played on November 4. You want to extend the postseason to Veterans Day? It's long enough as it is. One Wild Card game is all you need...

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... Haven't watched a whole lot of NFL so far this season. And to be honest, I haven't missed it...

PAC-12 PICKS

I don’t want to talk about it…

Washington State @ Cal: The Bears’ defense is playing better, but it still has a ways to go. I don’t know if this year’s game will be like last year’s 60-59 thriller, but it might be every bit as entertaining. I like Cal by 12.

Arizona State @ UCLA: At some point, all those defensive players the Bruins keep losing for the season have to bite them, right? Not this week. I like UCLA by 13.

Oregon @ Colorado: The wounded Ducks playing a night game in Boulder? This could be trouble. Oregon should still win, though. I like Oregon by 19.

Last week & this year: 1-3 (straight-up), 0-4 (ATS).
