Pac-12 Whiparound: Week 4

The road team was undefeated in Pac-12 play in week four.

The Pac-12 got crazy once again after dark last Saturday, but it wasn't in the way many expected.  UCLA, USC, and Utah delivered stunning road blowouts that produced both separation in the Pac-12 South but utter chaos in the Pac-12 North, where Cal sits as the only undefeated team and Stanford appears to be an offensive juggernaut. Let's look back at the week that was in the Conference of Champions...

Stanford 42, Oregon State 24:  A game whose 18-spread does not in any way reflect how dominant Stanford's offense truly was in this game.  The Cardinal racked up 325 yards rushing including a 217-0 edge in the second half to grind the Beavers into a Friday night afterthought. Quarterback Kevin Hogan was in full control despite speculation all week about his ankle.  Hogan averaged just under 12 yards per attempt and had big TD strikes to Tight End Austin Hooper and Wide Receiver Michael Rector.  The 24 Oregon State scored reflected the flash and talent of true Freshman QB Seth Collins as well as the dangerous Jordan Villamin (7 catches for 138 yards and 1 TD.  They young Beavs fought until the end, but simply could not handle a Cardinal juggernaut that dominated the line of scrimmage despite the loss of Left Tackle Kyle Murphy for the second half.  Running back Christian McCaffrey ran for 205 yards on the day and threw in a 38-yard gain on his only reception of the day.  The Cardinal lost two more of its precious defensive linemen, but actually played better in the second half in spite of that painful reality. Penalties also killed the Beavs, as OSU gifted Stanford four crucial first downs thanks to yellow flags.

Next Up for Stanford:  Sat. vs. Arizona 7:30 PM-The complexion of this game looks drastically different after Arizona showed so poorly and ended their game with huge injury questions (Anu Solomon).  However, the Cardinal continues to walk a thin line on the defensive front, rolling the dice once more that four healthy bodies will be enough.  I like the Cardinal's chances to score on Saturday night, but the real question for both teams may just be how effective can Arizona's offense be against the Cardinal D?

Next Up for Oregon State:  Bye Week

Colorado 48, Nicholls State 0:
The Buffs head into Pac-12 play next week with a 3-1 mark, as it seems Coach Mike MacIntyre's crew has put the season opening loss to the Rainbow Warriors in the rear view.  This game was never close, as the Buffaloes stampeded their foes 21-0 to start the game, and would only get worse from there. Colorado ran for 358 yards and passed for 278.  QB Sefo Liufau had a solid day, averaging nearly 11 yards per attempt while in the game.  Running Back Philip Lindsay made the most of his 13 carries with 117 yards, and Donovan Lee added another 103 on 10 carries. Of concern to the Buffaloes despite the rout has to be the 4-9 Red Zone TD performance.  The Buffs are going to need to maximize every scoring opportunity they get starting next week, as I don't see them as rolling up 350+ rush yards on the reg.

Next Up for Colorado:  Sat. vs. Oregon 8PM ESPN-The Buffs move into deep water as they begin their treacherous home slate with the defending conference champions.  Most have jumped off the Buffs' bandwagon after the struggle on opening day, but they'll have a chance to measure the progress they've really made this year.  Of course, the Oregon's result this week takes some of the luster off this match-up, but make no mistake:  This is a huge and legitimate challenge for Colorado.

UCLA 56, Arizona 30:  The Bruins showed up and blew away a clown car of an Arizona football team who was so bad that it rushed for a staggering 353 yards and still was blown away at home.  The Chosen Rosen bounced back from his struggles against BYU with 284 yards and two touchdown passes.  Arizona fumbled four times and lost two, including a ridiculous air mail job from Arizona center Cayman Bundage derailed what appeared to be a promising drive.  Arizona's depleted defense was hapless in the face of a balanced Bruin onslaught that completely negated the return of Scooby Wright to the Wildcat linebacking corps.  The Bruins went 11-15 on 3rd down and also was a mind-boggling 7-7 on Red Zone Touchdown percentage.  This game was in Bruin control almost the entire evening, as Jim Mora's mastery of Rich Rod continued.

Next Up for UCLA:  vs. Arizona State 4:30 PM Fox-  The Bruins host what now plays as a trap game of sorts against the Pac-12's most disappointing team.  After openly pursuing and fronting as a playoff team, Coach Todd Graham's Scholar Ballers are already playoff toast and it's not even October. UCLA has sustained significant injuries at every level of its defense, yet the Bruins continue to roll.  Pay attention to that running stat Arizona piled up.  I can assure you the rest of UCLA's opponents will.

Next Up for Arizona:  @Stanford 7:30 PM- It doesn't get any easier for the Kitties, as they head to The Farm to take on a suddenly formidable Stanford offense.  If Solomon can't go, this becomes an extremely difficult get for the Wildcats, but regardless of who plays there should be points aplenty on both sides.

Utah 62, Oregon 20:  There's not gonna be a more stunning score this season.  Oregon's league worst defense provided virtually no resistance against a Utah attack that has found its footing the last two weeks after some lackluster performances at home.  Utah's rugged defense smashed both Duck quarterbacks, holding Jeff Lockie and replaced starter Vernon Adams to 6.1 YPA and 2.6 YPC.  Royce Freeman still had a healthy 5.5 YPC average, but after Utah put 49-7 on the Ducks in the middle quarters, 5.5 yards a carry wasn't gonna cut it. Oregon got out-smarted, out-muscled, and even out-trickerated.  Utah had balance in amassing its 530 yards of offense (257 Pass/273 Rush), had Devontae Booker throwing passes, and even had Quarterback Travis Wilson averaging 16.7 yards running the ball.  It all added up the most thorough "Oregon-ing" Oregon's had in many, many years.

Next Up for Utah:  Bye

Next Up for Oregon:  at Colorado 7 PM ESPN-
A game that nobody would have questioned as a presumed Duck victory now doesn't seem so certain.  Colorado has not amazed anybody this season, but suddenly the Ducks are reeling, especially with uncertainty at quarterback.  It sounds like Lockie will play until Adams' finger is fully functional again, but that's not the side of the ball the Ducks need to address.  Colorado has Nelson Spruce at wide receiver and they'll be playing at home.  I think Oregon rebounds and finds a way to win this one, but monitor this score Saturday night.

USC 42, Arizona State 14:  The Trojans went to the desert, a place where they have had some notoriously bad games, and fully exposed an Arizona State team touted by many within and without Tempe as legitimate national playoff contenders.  Cody Kessler continues to be an efficiency machine, and all of USC's big-play players contributed.  Juju Smith-Schuster had two touchdowns, and Adoree Jackson took a Kessler pass 80 yards for a tone-setting first score. The Bako Bandit had Graham fuming like Buford T. Justice, as he dropped 375 (on 11.4 YPA) and 5 touchdown passes on the fraudulent Sun Devils.  Demario Richard rushed for 131 yards on just 14 carries, and receiver Gary Chambers added 103 yards receiving, but it wasn't enough to overcome a rough night from Quarterback Mike Bercovici (6.1 YPA), a bad night on 3rd down (5/13), and a defense that allowed seven yards per play.

Next up for USC:  Bye

Next up for Arizona State:  @UCLA 4:30 PM Fox-
After belly-flopping at home, the Devils return to southern California to take on a Bruin team looking more and more like the real deal in the Pac-12 South.  Arizona State did get Kalen Ballage back on Saturday, and he'll only be better as the weeks progress.  Receiver Devin Lucien is probable while five other Sun Devil are listed as questionable.  That term may start to apply to Bercovici, who ranks 11th in completion percentage, a problem considering he has been throwing the ball 39 times a game, second most in the conference.  ASU will need to run the ball on Saturday, as it's unlikely they've got any Jael Marys up their sleeve this year. A season that started full of strut and promise could be derailed permanently if the Sun Devils don't regain their groove.

With a third of the season's games already gone and the shift to conference play underway, we can see some interesting identities and realities starting to emerge.  Starting at the top we have vindication of what many presumed to be true.  USC and Cal are the two most explosive offenses in the league, and that's unlikely to change.  USC, especially, has established itself as everything we thought they could be in this regard.  Yes, those numbers are padded by their non-conference cupcakery, but the Trojans have five explosive drives in conference play alone, more than any other team and they tied for the most explosive plays in the Pac-12 last week with Stanford.

The Cardinal has had a schizophrenic path to its six explosive drives, as it had three each against UCF and OSU but none against Northwestern and USC.  Now this is a case where you have to go deeper in the numbers.  Remember that an explosive drive is one where you average 10+yards/play on any given drive.  I've held the teams here to the letter of the law, but in Stanford's case it should be noted there were drives of nine plays for 84 yards, as well as an eight-play drive that went 78 yards.  Those drives are but eight yards shy of adding to the total.  The bottom line is that Stanford's been an increasingly explosive team the past three games, and it's hardly been slowed by the increase in competition that comes with Pac-12 play.

The same cannot be said for many other members of the CoC.  In Week 4, eight teams started league play.  Of those eight, only Utah (from 1 to 2) had more explosive drives in their first conference game than in the game they played previously. Teams like Arizona and Oregon found the sledding far more difficult once they started playing against their league brethren. This is all to say that for many teams, it's going to take another couple weeks before we can really say with certainty who are the more combustible units in the Pac-12 and who may be high detonation pretenders.

I suppose some may be surprised by Kevin Hogan occupying the 3rd spot in yards per attempt, but anybody who watched the last three games of 2014.  He continues to hang statistically with Jared Goff, who has been outstanding.  The Bako Bandit tops the list, and it's to the point that his excellence is becoming so presumed week to week that it's almost under-appreciated.  Yes, he has insane talent around him, but he looks more comfortable running that offense than any quarterback I've seen so far in 2015.  The names that interest me the most are the two at the bottom of the list.  They certainly my earlier assertion that a big part of Arizona State's underachievement has been the underwhelming performance thus far of Mike Bercovici.  Now, some of that has to do with some instability of ASU's O line, but either way, he has not been the player many were expecting, and it's shown in ASU's record thus far.

Travis Wilson's numbers tell me more about Utah's defense than anything else. He had a great day in Eugene and as Ben Muth noted on our podcast chat this week, is probably not appreciated as much as he should be, but to be honest, it's hard to appreciate anything but his toughness at this point. Between Devontae Booker and the Utah defense, the Utes have a real "Stanford 2012-13" vibe going on, so it will be interesting to see if Wilson can keep delivering or what happens if he actually has to step up and win a game for Utah this year.

So where does that leave us in the Pac-12?  We know UCLA and Utah are very good teams.  We know that thanks in part to injuries the Arizona schools are not yet what they'd hoped to be.  USC is still the most talented team in the conference, but they've already taken a mulligan  The North is the real quagmire, thanks to Oregon's meltdown in the Autzen Asylum.  Stanford, who everybody left for dead in suburban Chicago after Week 1, now looks like it has a real shot to seize the North.  Then you have upstart Cal, who is undefeated and playing the best football we've seen from them in quite a while.  Washington even showed well against Cal, and appear as if it may be able to jump up and bite a better team before the year ends.

\r\n     I suppose some may be surprised by Kevin\r\nHogan occupying the 3rd spot in yards per attempt, but anybody who\r\nwatched the last three games of 2014.  He continues to hang\r\nstatistically with Jared Goff, who has been outstanding.  The\r\nBako Bandit tops the list, and it's to the point that his excellence\r\nis becoming so presumed week to week that it's almost\r\nunder-appreciated.  Yes, he has insane talent around him, but\r\nhe looks more comfortable running that offense than any quarterback\r\nI've seen so far in 2015.  The names that interest me the most\r\nare the two at the bottom of the list.  They certainly my\r\nearlier assertion that a big part of Arizona State's\r\nunderachievement has been the underwhelming performance thus far of\r\nMike Bercovici.  Now, some of that has to do with some\r\ninstability of ASU's O line, but either way, he has not been the\r\nplayer many were expecting, and it's shown in ASU's record thus far.\r\n
\r\n
\r\n Travis Wilson's numbers tell me more about Utah's defense than\r\nanything else. He had a great day in Eugene and as Ben Muth noted on\r\nour podcast chat this week, is probably not appreciated as much as\r\nhe should be, but to be honest, it's hard to appreciate anything but\r\nhis toughness at this point. Between Devontae Booker and the Utah\r\ndefense, the Utes have a real \"Stanford 2012-13\" vibe going on, so\r\nit will be interesting to see if Wilson can keep delivering or what\r\nhappens if he actually has to step up and win a game for Utah this\r\nyear.
\r\n
\r\n    So where does that leave us in the Pac-12? \r\nWe know UCLA and Utah are very good teams.  We know that thanks\r\nin part to injuries the Arizona schools are not yet what they'd\r\nhoped to be.  USC is still the most talented team in the\r\nconference, but they've already taken a mulligan  The North is\r\nthe real quagmire, thanks to Oregon's meltdown in the Autzen\r\nAsylum.  Stanford, who everybody left for dead in suburban\r\nChicago after Week 1, now looks like it has a real shot to seize the\r\nNorth.  Then you have upstart Cal, who is undefeated and\r\nplaying the best football we've seen from them in quite a\r\nwhile.  Washington even showed well against Cal, and appear as\r\nif it may be able to jump up and bite a better team before the year\r\nends.
