Clardy's Corner: Wild, Wild West

The Cardinal are a rare constant in a turbulent Pac-12 season. How have they done it?

I quit. I give up.

After another week of Pac-12 play filled with turmoil and upheaval, I am officially throwing in the towel on figuring out this conference.

The Pac-12 has long been a cutthroat conference, but I don't remember things being like this, well, ever. Look at what's happened so far. Oregon is going through so many quarterbacks, it wouldn't surprise me to see Tony Graziani running around out there for them soon. Cal is 5-0. Washington State probably should have made them 4-1.

Just when UCLA appeared ready to prove itself worthy of the crown, the real Arizona State finally showed up. USC folded like a tortilla in the second half against Stanford, then ripped the Sun Devils' hearts out the next week in Tempe.

And fifth-ranked Utah -- I repeat, fifth-ranked Utah -- is now the Pac-12 Flavor of the Week. Need proof? ESPN's College GameDay crew is coming to Salt Lake.

It's been chaos. Absolute chaos. Late Saturday night, I asked David Shaw what he thought about how the Pac-12 has shaken out so far. "Everybody in our conference can be beaten," he admitted. "That's just the Pac-12. We had our one game early in the year where we did not play our best football. I wouldn't be surprised if Arizona came out and ran the table the rest of the year. That's just the way that we are."

"It's the wild West every single week."

Indeed. But if you're going to survive in the wild, wild West, you need horses. And that may be why Stanford has been one of the few constants in a crazy conference season.

Stanford jumped into the time machine and went back to 2010 with its 55-17 win over Arizona last week. The offense was lethally efficient, and the defense spent the evening suffocating the Wildcats. Kevin Hogan threw two incompletions all night.

But once again, the ground game was insanely productive. In the two wins over Oregon State and Arizona, Stanford rolled up 639 yards rushing. Read that again. And the next time you see a member of the Stanford offensive line, shake his hand.

Granted, the defense the Wildcats brought with them wasn't exactly Desert Swarm, and Oregon State's defense needs to spend more time in the weight room. But those are still impressive performances by the men up front for Stanford. I guarantee you there were a lot of smiles in that corner of the locker room while the stat sheet got passed around and they all looked at the Card's rushing yardage total.

A smile certainly came over Christian McCaffrey's face when I told him about 639. "That's an exciting number for us," he told me. "I think it's exciting because there is still a lot more we can do. We still have more in the tank."

(for more of McCaffrey's thoughts, check out my interview with him as part of the Tuesday edition of the TreeCast podcast! OK, shameless plug over...)

McCaffrey's individual numbers have been awesome, too. Two weeks ago, he gashed Oregon State with a career-high 206 yards rushing (by the way, Stanford did not rush for 206 yards as a team in any game last year). Last week, he put up 156 more yards on just 17 carries.

Oh, and McCaffrey now leads the FBS with just under 230 all-purpose yards per game. There is that, too.

If McCaffrey doesn't win the Heisman Trophy this year, he'll probably have two people to blame: LSU's Leonard Fournette and Remound Wright, his own teammate. Seven times already this season, a Stanford drive has finished with a rejuvenated Wright providing his specialty: the touchdown plunge. Every time McCaffrey gets tackled at the one-yard line, Wright has been there to punch it in on the next play.

Problem is, Wright's nose for the end zone is taking away all of McCaffrey's scores in the process. Somehow, though, I'm pretty sure that everybody else cares about that much more than McCaffrey does. That said, I'm also sure he was glad to get in the end zone himself for his first rushing touchdown in a Stanford uniform.

McCaffrey has been the focus, and Wright has been the finisher, but Stanford still has more. Barry Sanders has rediscovered his breakaway touch, with his long scoring runs against the Wildcats and the Beavers things of beauty. Those are also the kinds of plays that many expected him to make right from the start.

The incredible thing about all five of Sanders' career touchdowns so far? They've all come in the second half. They've all come after Stanford has spent a first half pounding the opposing defense. And they've all been exclamation-point touchdowns, going back to the night he juked out a Cougar on his way to his first touchdown, drawing all the obvious comparisons along the way.

In an ideal world, I'd like to see Sanders be a bigger factor earlier in games. I'd love to see him start a game with a big burst, too. But the coaches have developed his role as the back who puts games out of reach, and Sanders has proven his worth there.

And, of course, there's Bryce Love, the freshman. We've talked about him already. Every week, his wiggle has moved the chains and helped add a new dimension to the Cardinal offense. Last week against Arizona, Love spent one play split out as a wide receiver, one-on-one against a corner. He caught a quick pass, then shake-and-baked for a five-yard gain. A little play, but an exciting wrinkle. And a glimpse into the further development of yet another weapon for Stanford.

The offensive line has rediscovered its mojo. The running backs are running wild once again. And, as we all know, Kevin Hogan's renaissance has taken his game to a new level. Those are the biggest reasons why Stanford has remained one of the only constants in a Pac-12 season filled with more variables than we all imagined.

Right now, Stanford seems to be one of the few teams Pac-12 followers can count on every week. Outside of that? Who knows? That's why I am forgetting about trying to figure out this conference.

Well, until next week, anyway.

RANDOM PAC-12 THOUGHTS

I told you, I don't know what to think. I think I'll keep my Pac-12 thoughts to myself this week.

Not a Pac-12 thought, but... I went to high school with A.J. Hinch. I went to Stanford with A.J. Hinch. You'd better believe I'm pulling for the Astros in the playoffs...

PAC-10 PICKS

Washington @ USC (-17) (Thursday). While I suspect the Huskies will be game to win The Sark Bowl, I also suspect the Trojans have just enough to hold off UW. I like USC by 14.

Oregon State @ Arizona (-8.5). As banged up and as unimpressive as the Wildcats have been the last couple of weeks, the Beavers just aren't physical enough to win games like this. Not yet, anyway. I like Arizona by 9.

Washington State @ Oregon (-17). Surely the Cougs can't come into Autzen and light up that Ducks secondary...can they? They just might. In the mean time, I still like Oregon by 10.

Cal @ Utah (-7).. Can you believe this is the game of the week? Jared Goff faces his most hostile environment yet. As much as I love what Cal can do on offense, that Ute defense and that crowd will be the difference. I like Utah by 13.

Colorado @ Arizona State (-15). Not much to say about this, is there? As long as the same Sun Devils we saw in the Rose Bowl last week come to Tempe too, I like Arizona State by 21.

Last week: 2-1 (straight-up), 3-0 (ATS).

This year: 3-4 (straight-up), 3-4 (ATS).
