Pac-12 Whiparound: Week 6

A week doesn't go by without a Pac-12 upset. What's next?

It was a short but eventful Saturday in the Conference of Champions, where offenses from The Farm to the Rockies blew up and reminded that when it comes to points, few can match the Pac-12, and apparently few Pac-12 schools can stop one another as well. If there was one unifying thread, it was that quarterback play not only is elite, but it must be if a team is going to compete in this conference.  Secondly, with a 3-0 Saturday and two more wins against the South, the North might not have as much depth as the South but its best will certainly be able to hang with the cream of the South crop.  The week featured double nickles, moonwalking Sun Devils, and lightning both literal and figurative.  When it was all said and done, the bottom line is that the only thing we really know is that we really don't know that much, and that's what makes this conference so fun on a weekly and annual basis. All right, to the whip!!!

Cal 34, WSU 28: The fact that this game featured the score it did and had everybody noting how both sides had improved defensively tells you a great deal about what 2014 was about for both. This game was a back-and-forth affair for most of the day, with 3 third downs ultimately deciding WSU's fate. Faced with a 3rd and 36 Cal was able to convert via the run late in the 4th quarter. After Vic Enwere's dash, WSU did get the ball back, but Luke Falk's interception with under four minutes to go put the pressure on the Cougar defense, who allowed two more back-breaking conversions that left The Pirate's Privateers with only 12 seconds left when its final drive began.  Ultimately, the difference in this game is that Cal was able to rush a little bit (80 yards) while WSU wasn't able to rush at all (14 yards).  Both QB's put up nearly 12 yards per attempt and nearly 400 yards each.  The lack of a run and three lost fumbles were too much for WSU to overcome as Cal now sits at 5-0 yet likely having played its last game as a favorite for a month.

Arizona State 38, UCLA 23:  Coach Todd Graham's Scholar-Ballers finally showed up to ball, and the Bruins once more proved vulnerable following the first week of classes.  Coach Jim Mora didn't want to make excuses afterwards, but that didn't stop him from doing so, as he lamented the massive distraction one week of classes had on the ability of his team to concentrate.  This game was not nearly as close as the final score, and the final score was a two-touchdown margin.  The Sun Devils punctuated the game with a stunning "Moonwalk" TD from Kalen Ballage, who probably represented what ASU's biggest problems was all along:  health.  The Sun Devils led 29-10 after three quarters before things got interesting with a pair of Bruin touchdowns.  Mike Bercovici continued to torment L.A. schools in Los Angeles in passing for two touchdowns and running for 55 yards and another score. Ballage's return yielded a nearly six yards per carry average, while the inability to run or convert 3rd Downs killed the Bruins. UCLA was 3-14 on 3rd down, and was only able to rush for 62 yards, compared to ASU, who gained 192 on the hallowed ground of the Rose Bowl.

Stanford 55, Arizona 17:  The Cardinal's season-opening six quarters sans a touchdown seem increasingly inconceivable as Stanford's offense has brought forth a virtually Biblical plague of TD's on its Pac-12 Opponents.  Stanford's worst effort in league play saw the team produce only 41 points in its league opener at USC.  On Saturday night, Stanford had it anyway they wanted, as shell-shocked Wildcat Coach Rich Rodriguez noted.  Kevin Hogan proved virtually impervious to incompletions, going 17-19 for 217 yards and two touchdowns.  Overall, the Cardinal put up 570 yards and averaged 8.3 yards per play, led by a devastating rush attack that ground 314 yards out of a Wildcat defense that resembled kitty litter when it was all over.  Once again, health was a huge factor here, as Arizona was without Quarterback Anu Solomon, Linebacker Scooby Wright, and an entire clowder of 'Cats including key defenders at every level.  Quarterback Jarrard Randal showed some flashes of his ludicrous speed as well as some nice throws, but overall struggled with a 6.4 yards per attempt that hamstrung a potent Wildcat run game. Star Tailback Nick Wilson managed only 2.7 yards a carry on a night when he was going to have to dominate to give Arizona any shot at keeping up with Hogan's Heroes.

Oregon 41, Colorado 24:  Colorado proved that it has definitely improved enough to throw a scare into good teams, and Oregon proved that reports of its demise are premature at least by a week, and likely more if you check their schedule.  The Ducks leaned heavily on their stable of incredible runners, and the group answered the bell. The Ducks, like Stanford, put up over 300 yards of rushing offense, and it was in this area that they outclassed the Buffaloes.  Colorado had only 77 yards on the ground, while the Ducks put up 361. Royce Freeman (166) and Taj Griffin (112 on only 11 carries) led the way for a stabilizing road victory.  Oregon's quarterback duo of Jeff Lockie and Taylor Allie weren't spectacular, but together they gave Oregon just enough  (8.4 YPA total) to keep Colorado's defense honest, and that would be all the run game would need.  Oregon's much maligned defense rebounded against what has become a sub-standard offense.  Colorado is now tied for 9th in scoring offense at 24 PPG after averaging 36 PPG against its non-conference opponents.

Stanford continues to climb the charts, helped in no small part from 65-yard touchdown runs from Barry J. Sanders the last two weeks.  The Cardinal has been the most explosive team in league play, though they are going to have to work hard to overcome the lead USC built on the strength of its Sun Belt dalliance with Arkansas State.  Cal continues to prove quite combustible, fitting for a team that plays on Kabam! Field.  The interesting aspect of this table so far is that it's not just deep passing that is allowing the teams to move in huge chunks.  Cal, Stanford, Oregon, and ASU among others all had big rush plays.  It's no surprise that three of the worst teams in the league are at the bottom of this table.  Utah continues to be the only successful team not generating explosive plays on a consistent basis.  They may very well need them in their next game.

So, what do we have here?  The biggest development is the rise up the charts of one Kevin Hogan, who put up a masterful 17-19 performance against Arizona and who would be leading the Pac-12 in a number of crucial categories if we limited our sample to league play.  Speaking of which, starting next week, we'll be using conference stats only, as every team will have played at least three conference games and we can dispense with the very noisy non-conference stats. Since four of these guys didn't play, it didn't seem right to switch this week. Again, though, what we see is that teams with established quarterbacks are the teams succeeding at this point of the season.  The fluctuations of fortune we've seen can easily be traced to the play of the signal callers.

Cal and Stanford are a combined 9-1 to start the year, and look at the quarterbacking they've gotten thus far. UCLA has at times looked like a juggernaut, but it's no coincidence that the Bruins have struggled in 2015 (the BYU nailbiter and the ASU defeat) with less than stellar performances from the Chosen Rosen.  And right on the other sideline, Arizona State rose from the ashes thanks to the first really great game from Mike Bercovici all season. Oregon was able to survive in Boulder to a large extent because as shaky as the Duck QB's were, Sefo Liufau wasn't ready to step up and carry his team to a win like that, even with the Spruce Goose to target.

Finally, note the only quarterback who has a higher yards per play than a yards per attempt is Travis Wilson.  Old Point Break's legs have been a big part of his success, as seen in Eugene.  Also, it speaks to a larger lesson:  the interconnectedness of things.  The big reason Wilson's YPP > YPA is that he's had the best pass protection in the conference thus far. Utah has allowed one sack so far in 2015. Uno.  Sack yardage in college gets deducted from a quarterback's rushing totals, unlike in the NFL. Goff, by the way, has already been sacked 12 times, third most in the conference.  Could it be that yet another potential Cal future NFL star has a bit of trouble holding onto the ball too long?  Or maybe it's just that he throws 36 passes a game and is super slow...

Next Up

Washington at USC Thurs. 10/7 6 PM ESPN- There will be plenty of bark directed at Sark, and should the Trojans falter, the snark will also be plentiful as USC's head coach faces his former team in the Coliseum.  On paper, points should be at a premium,, as the Huskies bring the best scoring defense in the conference to Los Angeles and the Trojans' second-ranked defense awaits true Freshman QB Jake Browning.  The 'Dawgs offense has shown signs of life recently, and the Husky D should be competitive against an SC offense that has run the ball well (5.4 YPC-3rd in Pac-12) but not often (129 attempts-10th in the Pac-12) and remains the league's most explosive unit.  Both teams come into the game relatively healthy.  JuJu Smith-Shuster is expected to play after dealing with personal matters, while the same affliction has made wideout Darreous Rogers doubtful.  Pretty sure SC is getting they wideout they'd prefer to have out of the two. The Huskies have shown some scrap under coach Chris Peterson, but they appear simply outgunned in this one.

Oregon State at Arizona Sat. 1 PM Fox Sports 1- Two teams coming off losses to Stanford collide in Tucson.  Arizona's offense could use an injection of Anu, but the Wildcat QB is questionable headed into Saturday.  If he goes, Arizona should have little trouble clawing a Beaver defense getting no help at all from the worst scoring offense in the Pac-12.  Both of these teams are hurt on defense, with 300 lb. plus tackles Kalani Vakameilalo and Noke Tago both listed as questionable for Beaver Nation.  With the status of Arizona Linebacker Derek Turituri still up in the air and Scooby Wright still out, this game likely goes to the team that can muster up some decent offense.  Look for that to be the Wildcats.

Washington State at Oregon 3 PM P12 Networks- Oregon can run and Washington can't, and that should cancel out the advantage the Cougars have at quarterback.  The Ducks defensive weakness (pass D) does play to WSU's strength, so this game may be the exploding scoreboard-type affair the Cougars had against Cal.  Far  more likely is that WSU hangs for two or three quarters, and then spits out the bit.  Don't be fooled by stats, either.  The Cougars have the best pass offense in the league based on yards/game, but they have only the sixth best passing game when judging by yards per attempt, which is a far more revealing number. One possible mitigating factor:  The Cougars are the least penalized team (tied with ASU) in the conference, while Oregon draws the most yellow flags (almost 8) per game.  Even with that going for him, I think the Pirate comes up short in this one.

Colorado at Arizona State 7 PM P12 Networks-The Sun Devils look to maintain the momentum they generated last weekend in Pasadena, and the Buffaloes should do just the trick. Both teams have been underwhelming on offense, but Arizona State was able to run the ball last week against UCLA, and Colorado could do nothing of the kind against Oregon.  Nelson Spruce ain't enough to overcome that disadvantage, and Sefo Liufau isn't ready to win games solely on the strength of his passing.

Cal at Utah 7 PM ESPN-The conference's main event gets underway at Rice-Eccles and it's got #Pac12AfterDark written all over it.  The Golden Goff and his fellow Bears get their first shot at proving that 5-0 is no fluke. Conversely, undefeated Utah is undoubtedly out to prove that its dismantling of Oregon wasn't one, either.  Considering they have the conference's best home non-conference win (Who was that khaki-wearing coach?  I know I've seen him elsewhere), the real question now isn't whether Utah is good, but whether they are truly great.  As in college football playoff great. So how do these teams match up?  Well, we know that Cal's strength is passing the ball, and Utah's pass defense is only rated 7th in the conference in yards per attempt.  The Utes are also 7th in the conference in rushing defense.  Yes, this is by far the best team Cal's faced all year, but this is also the best offense by leaps and bounds Utah will have faced, mainly because the Bears have Goff and just enough running so far to keep defenses honest. In fact, one might wonder how the Utes have been winning, given such modest defensive numbers.  Well, scoring over 100 points over the last eight quarters helps, but so does being second in the Pac-12 in turnover margin at +7.  The only team better?  Cal, who has forced an astonishing 18 turnovers on defense this year. Everybody loves a defense that forces turnovers, but they can be fool's gold. Teams that count on turnovers often run into trouble when facing a team that takes care of the ball.  Expect that to happen to Cal's defense at Rice-Eccles, and expect the game to come down to whether the Bears' occasionally porous offensive line can protect Goff.  X-factor:  Cal's pass rush has 11 sacks in two Pac-12 games to lead the conference by a wide margin.

So things get big in the Conference of Champions this week, as interdivisional games reign supreme, and that's not counting the big one on Galvez Avenue next Thursday.  It may be the Year of the Running Back, but if we learned anything this week, sooner or later it comes down to the signal callers.  Expect this week to be no different.

Washington at USC Thurs. 10/7 6 PM ESPN- There\r\nwill be plenty of bark directed at Sark, and should the Trojans\r\nfalter, the snark will also be plentiful as USC's head coach faces\r\nhis former team in the Coliseum.  On paper, points should be at\r\na premium,, as the Huskies bring the best scoring defense in the\r\nconference to Los Angeles and the Trojans' second-ranked defense\r\nawaits true Freshman QB Jake Browning.  The 'Dawgs offense has\r\nshown signs of life recently, and the Husky D should be competitive\r\nagainst an SC offense that has run the ball well (5.4 YPC-3rd in\r\nPac-12) but not often (129 attempts-10th in the Pac-12) and remains\r\nthe league's most explosive unit.  Both teams come into the\r\ngame relatively healthy.  JuJu Smith-Shuster is expected to\r\nplay after dealing with personal matters, while the same affliction\r\nhas made wideout Darreous Rogers doubtful.  Pretty sure SC is\r\ngetting they wideout they'd prefer to have out of the two. The\r\nHuskies have shown some scrap under coach Chris Peterson, but they\r\nappear simply outgunned in this one.
\r\n
\r\nOregon State at Arizona Sat. 1 PM Fox Sports 1- Two teams\r\ncoming off losses to Stanford collide in Tucson.  Arizona's\r\noffense could use an injection of Anu, but the Wildcat QB is\r\nquestionable headed into Saturday.  If he goes, Arizona should\r\nhave little trouble clawing a Beaver defense getting no help at all\r\nfrom the worst scoring offense in the Pac-12.  Both of these\r\nteams are hurt on defense, with 300 lb. plus tackles Kalani Vakameilalo and Noke Tago both listed as questionable for Beaver\r\nNation.  With the status of Arizona Linebacker Derek Turituri\r\nstill up in the air and Scooby Wright still out, this game likely\r\ngoes to the team that can muster up some decent offense.  Look\r\nfor that to be the Wildcats.
\r\n
\r\nWashington State at Oregon 3 PM P12 Networks- Oregon can run\r\nand Washington can't, and that should cancel out the advantage the\r\nCougars have at quarterback.  The Ducks defensive weakness\r\n(pass D) does play to WSU's strength, so this game may be the\r\nexploding scoreboard-type affair the Cougars had against Cal. \r\nFar  more likely is that WSU hangs for two or three quarters,\r\nand then spits out the bit.  Don't be fooled by stats,\r\neither.  The Cougars have the best pass offense in the league\r\nbased on yards/game, but they have only the sixth best passing game\r\nwhen judging by yards per attempt, which is a far more revealing\r\nnumber. One possible mitigating factor:  The Cougars are the\r\nleast penalized team (tied with ASU) in the conference, while Oregon\r\ndraws the most yellow flags (almost 8) per game.  Even with\r\nthat going for him, I think the Pirate comes up short in this one.
\r\n
\r\nColorado at Arizona State 7 PM P12 Networks-The Sun Devils\r\nlook to maintain the momentum they generated last weekend in\r\nPasadena, and the Buffaloes should do just the trick. Both teams\r\nhave been underwhelming on offense, but Arizona State was able to\r\nrun the ball last week against UCLA, and Colorado could do nothing\r\nof the kind against Oregon.  Nelson Spruce ain't enough to\r\novercome that disadvantage, and Sefo Liufau isn't ready to win games\r\nsolely on the strength of his passing.
\r\n
\r\n
\r\nCal at Utah 7 PM ESPN-The conference's main event gets\r\nunderway at Rice-Eccles and it's got #Pac12AfterDark written all\r\nover it.  The Golden Goff and his fellow Bears get their first\r\nshot at proving that 5-0 is no fluke. Conversely, undefeated Utah is\r\nundoubtedly out to prove that its dismantling of Oregon wasn't one,\r\neither.  Considering they have the conference's best home\r\nnon-conference win (Who was that khaki-wearing coach? \r\nI know I've seen him elsewhere), the real question now isn't whether\r\nUtah is good, but whether they are truly great.  As in college\r\nfootball playoff great. So how do these teams match up?  Well,\r\nwe know that Cal's strength is passing the ball, and Utah's pass\r\ndefense is only rated 7th in the conference in yards per\r\nattempt.  The Utes are also 7th in the conference in rushing\r\ndefense.  Yes, this is by far the best team Cal's faced all\r\nyear, but this is also the best offense by leaps and bounds Utah\r\nwill have faced, mainly because the Bears have Goff and just enough\r\nrunning so far to keep defenses honest. In fact, one might wonder\r\nhow the Utes have been winning, given such modest defensive\r\nnumbers.  Well, scoring over 100 points over the last eight\r\nquarters helps, but so does being second in the Pac-12 in turnover\r\nmargin at +7.  The only team better?  Cal, who has forced\r\nan astonishing 18 turnovers on defense this year. Everybody loves a\r\ndefense that forces turnovers, but they can be fool's gold. Teams\r\nthat count on turnovers often run into trouble when facing a team\r\nthat takes care of the ball.  Expect that to happen to Cal's\r\ndefense at Rice-Eccles, and expect the game to come down to whether\r\nthe Bears' occasionally porous offensive line can protect\r\nGoff.  X-factor:  Cal's pass rush has 11 sacks in two\r\nPac-12 games to lead the conference by a wide margin.
\r\n
\r\nSo things get big in the Conference of Champions this week, as\r\ninterdivisional games reign supreme, and that's not counting the big\r\none on Galvez Avenue next Thursday.  It may be the Year of the\r\nRunning Back, but if we learned anything this week, sooner or later\r\nit comes down to the signal callers.  Expect this week to be no\r\ndifferent.
